Spring Blanket | Texas Wildflowers by Rebecca Zook

Art Therapy
Post 11

Bluebonnets and Paintbrushes are blooming across the Texas landscape and I'm longing to get out and see them. Here is a taste of the next wave of wildflowers that will appear.

Spring Blanket
24" x 18" | Acrylic on Panel

Commonly called "Blanket Flowers" or "Indian Blankets" these say Texas to me more than the bluebonnets. Though beautiful, bluebonnets are short-lived and a bit finicky; needing a certain level of rainfall to be at their best. Blanket flowers appear after the bluebonnets and revel in the blistering Texas summer sun. They represent the hardiness of true Texans to me as they cover the rolling hills forming a blanket across the land.

Willow Loop Wildflowers
by Nancy Medina
12X16
Oil on Museum Quality Panel

A wet winter and spring have brought on the most colorful wildflower bloom in years in the Texas Hill Country. Willow City Loop is just outside the historic town of Fredericksburg, Texas, where I teach each spring. We also have plenty of blossoms up here in North Texas. The Dallas Arboretum has constructed an array of new rose arbors this year, along with some fun Texas-themed topiaries. Visit my art blog today for a photo tour for those who haven't visited yet this season - enjoy!

Jimmy Longacre_subjective realist landscape paintings_APRIL'S GIFT

This one was rather experimental.  When I saw this cluster of wildflowers, I knew that I had no interest in going for the detail.  The impact, for me, came from color and pattern of the grouping. So, I decided to go after it in a very direct manner.  By the time I was finishing I was having a lot of fun moving lots of paint around with the knife and brush.  Practicing to handle the knife so as not to overwork the paint was very instructive to me on handling the brush as well.

Live Oak in Spring by Kristine Kainer

NFS

Spring in the Hill Country of Texas is glorious.  Wildflowers such as bluebonnets, Indian paintbrush, and evening primroses blanket the landscape in a kaleidoscope of colors.  This painting attempts to capture the remarkable beauty of the landscape at this time of year after the dreary doldrums of winter.

Commissions welcome.

Landscape by Kay Wyne

Landscape - To be titled.
60" x 48" Oil on Canvas
Contemporary Palette Knife Painting
I just competed this landscape painting over the weekend.  It has fans on it, drying.  I used wide brushes, large palette knifes and lots of thick paint.  There are layers of paint, lots of texture and the wildflowers are so colorful you just want to touch them.  Since I used a gallery wrap canvas, a frame is optional.  Ready to hang as is.  Contact Kay for more information on this painting.  Thanks, Kay

Mountain Laurel Aspen Path by Floral Artist Nancy Medina

Mountain Laurel Aspen Path
by Nancy Medina
16X12
Oil on Archival Panel

Mountain Laurel Aspen Path is the daily newbie in Flower Mound Studio and painting number 23 in the 30 Paintings in 30 Days Challenge! I'm already just a wee bit worried about how I will keep up this momentum when I fly to Tennessee Thursday for four days of painting with students in Collierville. I'll be visiting some of my absolute favorite people, and their two little fluffy helpers, so I'll be extra busy having fun. Looks like I need to do a few paintings ahead of time, what do you think?

Blue Jean Bluebonnets by Texas Flower Artist Nancy Medina

Blue Jean Bluebonnets
by Nancy Medina
12X12
Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas

I've been exercising my landscape brushes lately, and the new collection of paintings would not be complete without at least one new bluebonnet, don't you agree? Blue Jean Bluebonnets reminded me so much of one of my favorite pairs of extra soft, extra worn jeans from my teen years, back when pale blue denim was in style and super wide bell bottoms. I've had lots of trips down memory lane lately, staying with mom and helping go through paperwork, favorite books and records, as well as a few terrifying photos of myself with big hair and glitter blue eyeshadow from the 1980s which you'll notice I'm not including here.  Also in the mix was a great deal of birdwatching, and the little feeder attached to mom's kitchen window attracted more than just birds. AnnieBee got up close and personal with a squirrel, as you can see on my art blog today! Take a peek and let me know what you think was going through her head....

A New England Cottage Painting and the Story of Flower Mound by Texas Artist Nancy Medina

New England Wilds by Nancy Medina
24X20
Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas

New England Wilds is the newest painting here on the easel in Flower Mound Studio. I drove by The Flower Mound tonight on my way home from the grocery store. The Mound's flowers were dried and brown from our recent freeze, but still looked beautiful and rose up much higher than I could see. Flower Mound was founded in 1844 by settlers who survived the Great Depression and other hardships, even though the railroads and other major developments passed them by.

The Mound is believed by some to be an Indian burial mound, but historians say there is no proof that is true. The settlers told the story that every time someone would build on it, a storm would blow away the building materials. The Mound stands untouched to this day, even though Flower Mound has grown up around it to a town of over 50,000. The Mound is now gated with a historical marker, and it stands alone as it has for decades, an enigma, silently watching over us.

Texas Sunflower Painting by V. Bridges Hoyt

A sunflower created out of mixed media—pencil, watercolor, gold permanent paint pen, ink pen and pastel Conte pencils. In the light, the gold paint accents glimmer. It seems impossible to pick up the shiny gold paint on a camera image.

SUNFLOWER GOLD II • 5x5 inches • mixed media

"Texas Spring 2" -Granbury Area, Texas

I've done exactly one bluebonnet painting in my life. I know it's THE Texas wildflower, and I love them, but really, they don't last long. The paintbrushes last longer, but the coreopsis and other yellow flowers not only bloom through Spring, but tough out the heat of a Texas Summer. I think my heart truly lies with them.

Queen Ann's Lace

"Queen Ann's Lace" ©2009 Niki Gulley
pastel 7" x 5"

I set up a floral still life in my studio, and particularly liked this close-up of the Queen Ann's Lace. Having grown up in Illinois, they've always been one of my favorite wildflowers from up north.

Poppies

"Poppies II" ©2009 Niki Gulley

oil painting • 5" x 7" • $100

Here's a second poppy study to go with my "Poppy Pair" painting from earlier this week. Again, I'm playing around with extremely thick paint, sometimes 1/4 inch of paint or more, to create texture. If you'd like more information, contact me at niki@nikigulley.com

Texas Wildflowers by Kay Wyne

I thought I would post this painting today since it is a gorgeous Texas morning. Blue Bonnet season is gone, and the wildflowers that you see along the Texas highways are also gone until next spring. I wanted to capture the beautiful field in this painting. I liked the colors in this painting....I probably need to tackle another wildflower painting. This painting looks very handsome framed up in a dark mahogony moulding with a gold fillet. If you would like to purchase this painting, please contact me!
