Heat Wave Sunflowers and a Florida Workshop - Flower Paintings by Nancy Medina Art

Heat Wave Sunflowers was my class demonstration today in sunny Florida. The day started out a bit chilly, but we hit the 80 degree mark by afternoon. I don't mean to rub it in, but at one point I had to turn up the air conditioning just a bit. I'm always a bit sad on the last day of class, telling friends goodbye and telling that ultra giant box of chocolates goodbye, can you blame me if I cried just a little bit? Tomorrow it's back home to the boss, Studio Director AnnieBee, and her minions, and the hubby who said he has missed me. It's good to be loved. I hope your family, friends and little four footed babies are nearby and keeping you warm today, where-ever you may be!

Class Demonstration ~ Dallas Arboretum

Glad Day Peonies was my class demonstration this morning during my Dallas Arboretum workshop - what a beautiful place to make flowers bloom! Stargazer lilies, glads and peonies were painted today (when you can't decide what to paint, why not paint it all?). I do think the chocolate cupcakes with sprinkles on top added a little something extra to the whole event, but that could just be the choco-holic in me talking. In addition to the outstanding helpers and volunteers at the Arboretum who make every workshop and event there enjoyable, it's such a treat to paint in the most beautiful gardens in North Texas. Next stop, my home state of Missouri and I get to stay in the haunted house again!

Summertime Dreams Pink Hydrangeas
by Nancy Medina

I've had a difficult time tearing myself away from my garden these past few days, but with all this color, can you blame me? My pink and blue hydrangeas are in full bloom, and thanks to the cool weather here in Texas, they may decide to stay at least a few more weeks. While I'm unpacking from my Tennessee workshop (and packing for Houston, Texas, next week!), I had time to open registration yesterday for a new workshop in Southern France. My first France workshop filled up in 2 days, so here's your second chance to enjoy a rose-laced, blue shuttered, sunshine kissed painting dream getaway you really, really deserve!

We'll spend 10 days at Le Vieux Couvent in the picturesque Dordogne region of Southern France August 4-14, 2015. Let's make flowers and landscapes bloom in brilliant color together in this all-inclusive getaway featuring excursions, gourmet meals, and all the peace and serenity your heart desires. We'll tour some of the most unspoiled provincial villages in Southern France together and I'll provide the oil paint to ensure your stress-free journey.

Plan to paint, relax, and enjoy the countryside in this workshop at your own pace and your own speed. This will be a SMALL workshop with plenty of individual attention for all levels of experience, and seats are filling fast.

Sun Tossed White Peonies is the newest daily painting in Flower Mound Studio - after teaching in North Texas today, I had a whole bouquet of white peonies that will only last a few more days, so I had to paint them! My class created some beautiful blue hydrangeas today, and here is a photo for you. Tomorrow, we paint - sunflowers!

The U-Haul is all loaded with over 100 new paintings, with my yellow director's chairs and my new rolling table with my new hydrangea tablecloth, and my purse is full of sunscreen, bubblegum and chocolate. I can't imagine anything more I need to have a successful art show in the garden during Dallas Arboretum Artscape except for one super important ingredient - YOU! You are invited to join me for my only outdoor show of the year this weekend in Booth 43, April 26-27, with a member preview Friday evening from 6 to 8 pm. I've doubled the size of my tent for 2014, so you'll get to see twice as many flower paintings. You could even move some living room furniture in there and sit down with a bowl of popcorn or take a nap under awning number two. The possibilities are endless!

I'm always excited to visit the Arboretum, after all, it's the incredible staff in the Adult Education Department who first convinced me to start teaching flower painting over 4 years ago. Little did I know, I was about to embark on the most enjoyable chapter in my life, my work as a flower painting instructor. Wear your comfy shoes and bring your camera and join me in the gardens, I'll be the lady in the pink apron with just a dab of green paint on her nose....

Pink Champagne Daisies and Succeeding as an Artist, Year One - Flower Paintings by Nancy Medina

Pink Champagne Daisies

What on earth does a full time artist do all day? It's not all sleeping late and watching reality TV. In fact, I cannot remember the last time I watched TV. It has been years since I sat on a couch for more than three minutes. This is not whining, I'm just too excited about what's going on in the studio to sit still for more than three minutes these days! In two weeks, it will be my One Year Anniversary of my Departure From Corporate America. I clocked out. I hopped off the treadmill. I jumped off the cliff into the abyss of hopes and dreams and launched my own business. In the first 6 months, I wondered every single day if I would be able to pay the bills. I lay awake at night adding numbers in my head. The water bill, the Toyota payment. The tax bills *gulp*.

One year later, did I make it? Did I at least come close to reaching the same six-figure salary I had in corporate America? The answer is: Read more....

Class Demonstration

Maroon Cascade Peonies was my class demonstration in North Texas, as I pack up supplies for my Florida workshop. I've learned how to juggle supplies between overlapping events and workshops, and always have at least three easels, two sets of traveling paints, and multiple palettes and turp cans all juggling about simultaneously.

I've learned an easy way to carry my wet paintings home - I call it the Gallery Wrap Pancake Stack. Read more...

Blue Times Two Delphiniums was one of my 2 class demonstrations today in North Texas. Tomorrow we paint peonies! It's a bit like winning the lotto to find fresh delphs and peonies in the market in early January. Well, okay, a bit like winning one of those $100 scratch off tickets at least! My next workshop is February 14-16, in Irving, Texas, and you are cordially invited! Put a little joy in your brush and let's make brilliant flowers bloom. My Irving, Texas workshops are ideal for the traveling student with a shuttle that picks you up at the airport and drives you to class each day. I provide solvent for students who fly in and also ship your wet paintings home for you after, not to mention coffee and donuts every day!

Dress Number 5 of the 29 Dresses Series ~ Sunshine Poppy Party Dress Painting by Nancy Medina

Sunshine Poppy Party Dress is the fifth dress in my 29 Dresses Series, and also the fifth painting in the 30 paintings in 30 days challenge by Leslie Saeta. This party frock is a bit whimsical, and the wide black belt is designed to minimize the waist. I'm continuing my hunt for excellent fashion books for inspiration and admiration, and today received a note from a friend and excellent artist suggesting a Dior book that I can hardly wait to add to my collection! I love classic, beautiful, simple and elegant design. I think it's absolutely timeless.

SOLD ~ Winter Mix Peonies and Oranges and a January Workshop by Nancy Medina

SOLD

Winter Mix Peonies and Oranges is the newest painting in Flower Mound Studio, and my January workshop is coming up soon! Students are coming from South Carolina, Louisiana, Kansas, and Texas so I am planning a batch of extra special donuts for the travelers in the group. Although with the new Market Street (*sound of harps*) opening in Flower Mound, the pastries might be even fancier, if they survive the half hour trip in the car from home to the final destination. You may recall that tragic moment last year when I had the donut box open enroute, just to do a quality assurance check, of course,, and the whole box slid into the floor when I had to hit my breaks. Whomever said there is no crying in painting clearly never suffered the loss of an entire box of warm donuts.

My January workshop still has some seats open, so come on out and join us. Put a little joy in your brush and let's paint brilliant flowers together and ring in the New Year, while we're at it!

I've been painting a plethora of peonies in whites and pinks this holiday season, and brainstorming ways to say thanks to everyone who has walked with me on my art journey this year. This has been my first year as a full time artist, and the excitement, enthusiasm and energy of my students, collectors and friends has been an unexpected benefit of this new job of mine. As my thanks, I've already given away two original oil paintings on my Facebook fan page this month. But I've saved the biggest giveaway of the year for last - visit my art blog today to find out how you can enter and win!

SOLD ~ Sun Siren Sunflower by Floral Artist Nancy Medina

Sun Siren Sunflower

SOLD

Sun Siren Sunflower was one of my class demonstrations in my North Texas workshop this week. One of the best parts of teaching flower painting is meeting interesting people from all over the world, and hearing their interesting stories. This week I had ladies in class who had lived in Paris France, Vietnam, China, and Kazakhstan. Despite all these diverse backgrounds, everyone seemed to click and by the end of three days, were sad to say goodbye to one another. I think artists in general have a way of looking at life that goes past the surface, beyond borders, and into the heart.

Little Dream White Tulip

The studio easel has earned its weight in cookies today, assisting with a large tulip painting, a commissioned hydrangea still life, and a pink poppy triptych this evening. It's been a regular flower factory around here! I'm washing the brushes early and starting on a batch of my favorite Christmas cookies. I make these every year for my neighbors and for my husband's coworkers. It's important to sample at least three to four cookies from each batch prepared prior to gifting, for quality assurance purposes. I hold these cookies solely responsible for the 5 to 10 pounds I gain every single holiday. Visit my art bloggy for the recipe for these super simple, super yummy cookies. Thanks Betty! Enjoy!

Lava Red Poppies by Nancy Medina

Lava Red Poppies was one of three poppy paintings completed in Flower Mound Studio today. I confess we had to make certain sacrifices in order to dedicate such an amount of time to the easel. One sacrifice was failure to throw Studio Director AnnieBee's toy du jour as frequently as her majesty would have preferred. With many apologies and promises to do better tomorrow, I'm hopeful her humble servant will be forgiven shortly. Right after bed-time snack dispensations, I imagine...

Windswept Pink Poppies is the daily newbie in Flower Mound Studio, and I'm finally unpacked from weeks of travel and teaching, and getting ready for the holidays and my December workshop in North Texas. My Mom is coming home from the care center Thursday, and she is getting her appetite back so we are pretty happy about that. Today she wanted hot wings and a white chocolate raspberry bundt cake from Nothing Bundt Cake! Over a year ago, the doctor had given her weeks to live. I'm thankful for all of this time we have had, and count every day with her as precious.

Every painting class I teach is a whole new adventure, and each one takes on its own texture, style, culture and flavor, depending on the mix of student personalities. San Diego was definitely one of those groups who had no fear of fun. Or maybe it was the Donut Bar gourmet sugar that set everyone off, you can see here that our tour of Coronado Flower Gardens had us ready to take notes. We had the great fortune to run into the architect of Flower Gardens of Coronado, Juan Flores, who shared all his favorite tips for making delphiniums and foxgloves look their absolute best. Next stop was dinner at an Irish Pub downtown. After a few high kick routines in Balboa Park on Sunday, it was the general consensus we would not be quitting our day jobs to join the Rockettes for their Christmas Tour, (although Alan said that after his hip surgery next week, he will be ready to touch his nose with his toe....)

Move over Rockettes, my San Diego class is ready to take the stage!

Cottage Path Geraniums and a San Diego Workshop by Nancy Medina

Today was the first day of my first California flower painting workshop, and we started off with a bang! The hubby brought everyone gourmet donuts from the Donut Bar, giving us just enough sugar charge to tackle delphiniums and white zinnias. With 17 students from Canada, New Mexico, Washington, California, and Texas, we had tons of awesome space in our San Diego studio located in the heart of historic Balboa Park. I'm easily distracted by donuts, and totally forgot to get a photo of my demo today, so I'll be sharing that with you tomorrow.

Fall Ladies White Pumpkin and Hydrangeas was my class demonstration this morning in North Texas, as we wrapped up three days of painting flowers in North Texas. I completed demos of stargazer lilies, sunflowers, white roses, red poppies, and white hydrangeas. In the afternoons, we worked together step by step to create original paintings, including a study of a large clear vase fondly referred to as "Big Blue". It seemed only fitting on the last day to paint a pumpkin, since the holiday is right around the corner! Here's to a beautiful week to come, cooler weather, and lots of sunshine as we gear up for pumpkin pie and turkey and all the trimmings!
