This small painting is drying in the studio...I was in the mood to paint a floral landscape.  I started with a black acrylic base coat.  Then sketched in my map for the painting with a filbert.  Once I let that layer of paint dry, I pulled out a #10 bright and started layering the juicy oils.  The flowers in the foreground are bold and colorful, and the eye wanders through the grassy field.  This painting is for sale.  Contact Kay for purchasing information.  Thanks for viewing....Happy Father's Day to my Dad, Charlie Miller and to Blake and Wes...it's their first Father's Day!  KMW

This painting is drying at the studio.  I have two layers of paint on the panel, then lots of palette knife work.  I used impasto to get some texture on the smooth canvas.  The photograph may not show, but the clouds are thick, broad strokes of oils with the knife.  I will get this framed once it is dry...it needs to sit right now so that the paint won't get smudged up.  Feel free to contact ME for purchasing info.  Thanks for looking, Kay

I was back in the studio yesterday, and got my palette knife out and created this painting.  The paint is layered on the panel, giving it texture and depth.  I moved the paint around quite a bit once it was on the panel.  The horizon line was changed numerous times...I wanted it to fade into the background, and needed to mix my oils over and over to get a hazy far-away look. Today is day 4 of the 30 Paintings in 30 Days Challenge

I have been working on a series of floral landscape paintings for the gallery in Santa Fe.  I have explored different size canvases, different color palettes, and different techniques.  Here I used the palette knife to get thicker, more textured flowers in the foreground.  The clouds and horizon have softer brush strokes.  The path fades away into the background....allowing the viewer to drift through the field.  Contact Kay for more information on this piece.

This painting has a new home!  This is one of my Wildflower Landscapes that I painted in 2014.  I worked on a series of them, and have explored many possibilities with this subject matter.  I am starting next year out with a paint challenge, and hoping to have a creative and productive 2015.  I think I will paint whatever I feel like painting...with Roosters and Cows at the top of my list.  I hope you all have a safe and fun New Years Eve!  Kay

Contemporary Landscape Painting

On a recent trip to Santa Fe, John Wyne and I took the High Road to Taos and drove through a wonderful part of New Mexico.  The long and winding road took us through some amazing countryside.  One of my favorite things to photograph is old churches, missions and cemeteries.  The wildflowers were scattered through the cemetery, which was located next to a country church on top of a hill.  The old stones and graves have character, making it a great subject to paint.  The day after we returned to Dallas from the trip, I had to paint the scene while it was fresh in my mind.

Here it is framed up in a new Randy Higbee Gallery Frame.  The moulding is 3 1/2 inches wide, so total framed piece is 22 1/2" x 26 1/2" with a rubbed grey stain and gold lip. Day #11 of the 30/30 Paint Challenge

As I continue exploring the floral landscape series, I am digging deep into my color palette.  The flowers in the foreground are thick and loose.  The trail of flowers fades into the horizon where the hills/mountains are.  I started with a toned canvas - using scarlet red, it really warmed the canvas up, and there are little pieces of the scarlet showing through on the coulds.  This is my post for Day #11 for Leslie Saeta's Paint Challenge.  Thanks for looking....Be sure to contact Kay with any questions concerning the paintings posted here.  Thanks, Kay

Day # 2 of the 30/30 Paint Challenge with Leslie Saeta

This painting was a total re-do for me.  I had an abstract

on the canvas, was totally not liking it.  So I switched 

gears and decided it would be a floral landscape...rather

abstract, with thick, thick paint.  I put it on the studio wall

immediately because I did not want to bump into the wet

paint.  I was very impulsive on this painting, and pulled

out some tools---no brushes.  I used a couple of palette

knives, some wipe-off instruments that are great for

scraping and drawing through the paint.  Thanks for

Contemporary Wildflower Landscape Painting

When I started this landscape, I wanted a soft, mystical feel to the painting.  I wanted the viewer to "drift" into the painting and roam around the canvas.  The wildflowers are fading into the background, and everything is still.  Not alot of bold brush strokes going on...which many of my paintings have.  The sky is a soft icey gray-blue, and the wildflowers have magentas, ochres, and blue-greens.  This canvas is stretched on gallery wrap stretcher bars, so frame is not needed.  Contact Kay for more information on this painting.  Thanks for looking...KMW

Dallas Arboretum Cherry Blossom Stroll is a new commissioned painting in progress in Flower Mound Studio tonight. My November Dallas Arboretum workshop is full, so we're celebrating (and packing for a Florida workshop next week!)

What a beautiful weekend, with perfect weather, sunny skies, and cool breeze. Just right for time to transfer and cull out my iris garden rhizomes! Our irises have done so well this year since we dedicated a new bed to their care last year. I have lots of iris rhizomes to share with friends. I can't wait until next spring to see the color again, in all its splendor....

Texas Wildflowers - Mexican Redhats

11x8.5 watercolor and ink on paper of wildflowers growing locally in west Texas.  With less rainfall of course they aren't as plentiful, so for this painting I had to use photos taken 4 years ago as well as a few live specimens.  I love their red petals resembling petticoats.
