We've been thinking pink all week in Flower Mound Studio, and preparing for spring! Today the hubby and I planted hydrangeas and geraniums and bought two new adirondack chairs for the yard. After an hour or two of work in the studio, I noticed none of my helpers were afoot. Thinking someone was getting into trouble (you know, that moment when it's just TOO QUIET in the house?) I went outside, and all the pugs were lounging with their Papa outdoors. Clearly, what was missing from that blissful tableau was me! I gathered up my iced tea and sun hat and joined them post haste.... How fortunate I am to have pugs to show me the error of my ways every now and then.

Necessary Pinkness was one of two demonstration paintings completed today in Flower Mound, Texas, thank you so much to all the friends who dropped by to say hello! It is always fun to produce a flower painting when you can walk over to an actual Flower Department a few feet away and replenish your fading models mid-painting! I had almost finished my first demo of the day, a hydrangea panorama, when it occurred to me some pink delphiniums sure would spice things up a bit. I just toodled on over to the flower department and there was a nice big bundle just waiting to be mine! Actually, it's probably a good thing I cannot just walk to a flower department any time I get the craving for a particular color combo. I would be penniless! Happy, but penniless!

Morning Sun Pink Hollyhocks is the daily newbie in Flower Mound Studio, a scene from my visit last month to the mountains of Utah. The girls and I were driving up a winding country lane when we spotted a massive garden of hollyhocks in every color your heart could desire, there were lipstick red, red wine black, pale pink, white, and hot pink. I whipped out my new IPad and went to town taking pictures, I love using my IPad for photography now, instead of lugging around my heavy Canon when I travel. I just slip my IPad into my purse, and off I go!
Morning Sun is my 25th entry in the 30 Paintings in 30 Days Challenge, and I'm all packed and ready for my Tennessee workshop this weekend. SUH-Weet tea drinkers, here I come! Stay tuned to the art bloggy for pictures of my Tennessee flower painting workshop, you may see some familiar faces!

Memory Garden Pink Roses is the newest painting in Flower Mound Studio, and number 15 in the 30 Paintings in 30 Days Challenge by the Incomparable Leslie Saeta! These are roses from my visit to Coronado, California, this past spring, during my annual show on the island. The roses there grow so large, and never have an "off season," or training camp, or time away from the field. They grow 365 days a year, with the best light, the best sunshine, and some of the most beautiful cottage homes a rose's could ever desire.
Today my first workshop in San Diego, California, is almost full, with just 2 seats left. I'm taking a moment to say thank you. Thanks to my amazing and talented students, to those who have walked with me on this art journey and sent words of encouragement, and thank you to my collectors. I dared to step out on faith in April, when I quit my 6-figure job to become solely, inimitably, a full-time artist and art teacher. You are the reason my dream is coming true, and I am humbled, and so very thankful, for you.

My Dallas Arboretum students produced flowers in warm colors despite a chilly day in the gardens! The Easter egg hunt was postponed due to a rainstorm in the morning, but the clouds cleared and the sun peeked through just in time for our lunchtime break to see the gardens.Visit my art blog and join me for a photo tour of Dallas Arboretum Blooms Fest!
My students painted pink hydrangeas and yellow sunflowers and the big bright classroom was all warmed up for us when we arrived, with a box of double glazed donuts and a pot of hot coffee. The Dallas Arboretum is one of my favorite places to teach in the whole world. I am happy to report not a single delectable donut went to waste and there were many smiles as the ladies packed up their easels at the end of the day, taking home at least two new paintings each! Pretty good for a one-day class. I just had two seats open in my April 3-day class at the Jaycee Parks Center for the Arts, so don't delay, put a little joy in your brush and let's make flowers happen this spring!

The Gathering - Pink and Crimson Poppies, is a new triptych, and the first one I've done in quite a while. Since the piles o' red paint were in abundance, I could not deny my need to keep right on painting in this cheerful, warm color, on these cold winter nights! I'll be featuring this new work, along with some action pug photos in the snow in my newsletter next week. Today I'm finishing up a 36X24 poppy, and tomorrow I have a poppy commission to create so brace yourself - more poppies will be blooming very soon!

This barn and property have intrigued me for many years. An old barn with an ocean view behind it, how delightful. If it had not been raining and I was stuck painting inside my van, I never would have chosen this view. But I'm happy I did…

"Sheriff's Meadow Fog" - Thaw Malin iii
"Sheriff's Meadow Fog", this is a small painting, 6" x 8", oil on canvas panel.
Living in town for the winter has its bonuses like walking to the movies or a restaurant. But when I start to miss all the open fields and water views of Chilmark and up-island, I remember I have access to this little sanctuary behind the house. I have done 10 or 20 paintings around Sheriff's Meadow over the years. Yet, when I think I have "found" the last painting I could ever create here, up pops something new due to weather, season, time of day, light, or in this case pruning and mowing off the path. I left for a walk around the pond a half hour before sunset. Usually I would carry my gear with me. This evening, fog was rolling by, there would be no sunset just a darkening of the daylight. So I walked empty handed. Half way 'round the pond proper is a spillway, bridge and this view of Butler's Mudhole. Much tree damage had happened due to the last 2 storms. The caretaker's clean up included brush cutting around and under an old, damaged willow to a dry bit of grass by the property edge. Stepping there to photo this view I knew I had a new painting to do. Having raced back to the house/studio to get my paints, I set up quickly and worked down from the horizon starting with the hedge and little bathhouse with my largest brush. Landscapes are fairly quick to paint, if you think about them for a minute. Most brush movement is horizontal, stopping only to clean brush and mix and change colors. The one thing which stops a quick landscape is a strong vertical item in the scene, requiring cutting in around the object and thus ceasing the flow of brushwork. The bathhouse, the only vertical, was tiny and did not slow me down. I saved the sky until last, in case it caught a blush of color as the sun set off in the fog. Canada Geese arrived in "v" formations looking for a place to bed. I held my ground until last light when geese moved into pond and fog rendered me invisible…

"Signs Of Fall" - Thaw Malin iii
"Signs Of Fall", this is a small painting, 6" x 8", oil on canvas panel.
I almost missed this painting opportunity. I love the views in the fishing village of Menemsha. Concentrating on the boats in port and their respective docks and gear, I almost didn't see the colors of the far shore. It is full of a patch of rosa rugosa, locally known as beach rose. Usually a full, deep green color with red/pink or white roses, it opens its blooms early in spring. The scent, mixed with the aroma of the sea salty air, is a heady nose full of the summer to come. This particular stand had all turned a rusty yellow orange, stacked one atop the other marching up the hillside. On this bleak cold, almost snowy day, they were a welcome warming sight to behold...

A favorite corner of South Beach. I especially love this collection of last century buildings. This is what the Vineyard will always be to me, small scale, happy, close to the land and ocean. Of course, my vision is incomplete without summer, too, but off season has its own pleasures...

I came upon this scene one rainy, foggy day. The fog isolated the dory from what was usually a crowded background. That is what I like about fog. It can transport you from here to anywhere, by taking away all the local points of reference...
