"Cedar Tree Neck Barn" - Thaw Malin iii

"Cedar Tree Neck Barn"

"Cedar Tree Neck Barn", this is a small painting, 6" x 8", oil on canvas panel.

This barn and property have intrigued me for many years. An old barn with an ocean view behind it, how delightful. If it had not been raining and I was stuck painting inside my van, I never would have chosen this view. But I'm happy I did…

The value of this work of art is $550 USD, but, as my gift to you, for the 7 days of the auction each piece is in from the day it is created, you may start bidding at $100 (before the price becomes $550)… This is my way of saying thank you for enjoying my work and keeping me creating new ones almost everyday. Your interest stimulates and inspires me and has made me a better painter for it.

"Distant Dunes" - Thaw Malin iii

"Distant Dunes"

"Distant Dunes", this is a small painting, 6" x 8", oil on canvas panel.

Out of the breeze in a sunny location with Africa just over the far dunes (thousands of miles away), I studied one of my favorite trees. Its leaves, I thought, were brown, in reality were a dark shade of red. As the sun popped in and out between the clouds, the leaves turned on and off from illuminated red to a duller red/brown...

"In The Autumn" - Thaw Malin iii

"In The Autumn"

"In The Autumn", this is a small painting, 6" x 8", oil on canvas panel.

The temperature has been dropping along with rain and leaves as the color of the land slowly changes from greens, reds, golds, oranges, browns to lavenders and grays. The setting sun, although moved from north of west to south of west still casts its charm upon the unsuspecting evenings. Drab views attain a golden radiance at this hour, mostly unsurpassed in summer months. Sights, unseen in green, now come slowly forth as the backbone of the ridges, hills and vales appear. As we dream about our gardens past, the season shifts and we are thankful, once again…

"After the Hurricane" - Thaw Malin iii

"After The Hurricane"

"After The Hurricane", this is a small painting, 6" x 8", oil on canvas panel.

I began this image 2 days after hurricane Sandy rolled by. I returned a few more times during similar lighting conditions to finish it. Got caught up in the storm which came in on the tail of the hurricane. Contracted a bad flue which appears rampant in these parts. Now here I am 10 days later, finished…

Eel Pond 1892 - Thaw Malin iii

"Eel Pond 1892"

"Eel Pond 1892", this is a small painting, 6" x 8", oil on canvas panel.

In 1892 this was the northwestern most edge of Eel Pond in Edgartown, Mass. The southeastern most corner was and still is about where the houses stop on the left of the far shore. 120 years of storms and Nor'Easters have eroded away, opened, and pushed the eastern edge of the pond into itself. A small, sheltered anchorage for shallow draft boats is all that is left of the once large saltwater great pond...

Morning Puddle - Thaw Malin iii

"Morning Puddle"

"Morning Puddle", this is a small painting, 6" x 8", oil on canvas panel.

Artist and friend, Susan Metzger, was visiting Martha's Vineyard this weekend. She was roaming about with her camera collecting landscape photos for inspiration for a painting exhibit she will have here next year. She is a very early riser so I suggested meeting her at sunrise on Long Point Reservation. She could gather some images and I could set up and finally do an early sunrise painting. We met up and had some great artist conversations while walking out toward the dunes. And then again when she came back from shooting and while I broke down my gear and walked back to the parking area. It is always stimulating to talk process with another artist, especially since she has a completely different approach to paint than I do...
