Daisy Chain Daisies and Larkspur was my class demonstration this morning for my Valentine's Weekend Workshop in Irving, Texas. We had such a fun painting session today and this talented group of ladies produced some of the prettiest blue hydrangeas I have ever seen! I was also very proud that even though we were a small group, they assisted me in putting an admirable dent in the box of double glazed chocolate covered donuts without complaint or hesitation whatsoever.

There was not a single sunflower to be found at Central Market *sound of harps* when I went flower shopping for this workshop a few days ago. Granted it was Valentine's week. Granted the well trained husbands were all lined up with their smart phones and business casual attire, queuing politely and awaiting each of their hand picked bouquets for their honeys. As I silently saluted these wonderful guys for not stopping at the gas station for their sweetheart's gifts, I also wondered which was the culprit who scarfed up all the sunflowers! No worries, once I spotted those bright yellow daisies, all was well in the flower world again, and the balance and order of all things colorful was restored.

Hearts Wing Blue Hydrangeas is the newest small work in the studio. The big ole blue hydrangea plant I carried out of the market a few days ago (whilst trumpets played) is still looking perky, and even put up with my mud lamp spotlight for a few hours this evening during the painting session.

Tomorrow morning the hubby wants to spend the day with me at the Dallas Arboretum. This will be a great excuse to stop in and say hi to Joy and Megan in the Education Department. These talented ladies are cooking up a few new spring workshops for me there very soon. Rumor has it there are already some early spring bloomers making an appearance in the gardens! Stay tuned to the bloggy, I promise to share photos with you, all my flower friends!

Daisy Daisy is one of a few new paintings drying in Flower Mound Studio this evening. I've been on a painting binge since returning from my Mom's this afternoon. We are celebrating here in Flower Mound, as Cuties and Hydrangeas has been the cause of quite a bit of confetti in the studio this week. Thank you so very much to everyone who voted for the painting, it received first place for People's Choice for the BoldBrush Painting Competition for January, one day after I learned it had received first place in the Contemporary Fine Art International Elegance Juried Show. What a huge honor, especially considering the incredibly talented competition!

Afternoon Light is the newest painting in Flower Mound Studio, as I pack my bags for a trip back to East Texas to spend time with Mom. The hubby brought me a big bowl of cheese popcorn as I was finishing up this new floral, and later a piece of Hershey's chocolate provided that essential fuel needed to finish! Thank goodness for carbs and caffeine to keep those creative juices flowering!

Studio Director AnnieBee and I have been spending quite a bit of time in East Texas at the farm with my Mom. Mom is settling into a new routine with visits from hospice and doctor's orders that she should eat "absolutely anything she wants from this time forward." This does not bode well for my waistline. Last week, I spied an old turntable in her piano room and dragged it out into the kitchen, so she could hear the music. After playing Moonlight Serenade, Little Brown Jug, The St Louis Blues and Tuxedo Junction, I played this: Frank Sinatra - It Was a Very Good Year Mom was dozing while the music played. When she woke up, she smiled and told me she had had the best dream. She said she dreamed I had found her old record player and brought it into the kitchen, and I had played some of her favorite old songs for her. We both giggled when I told her it hadn't been a dream at all. It was a very good day.

My mother began writing poetry when we were toddlers. She collected her poems in a large spiralbound notebook over the years. By the time we were in high school, she had been published in several anthologies and had won some awards for her writings. She did not tell us she wrote poetry, or show us her work, until I was 22 years old. She wrote a poem about me once, and it told of a kitten who grew up and whom she could no longer protect from the world. Read more...

The Gathering - Pink and Crimson Poppies, is a new triptych, and the first one I've done in quite a while. Since the piles o' red paint were in abundance, I could not deny my need to keep right on painting in this cheerful, warm color, on these cold winter nights! I'll be featuring this new work, along with some action pug photos in the snow in my newsletter next week. Today I'm finishing up a 36X24 poppy, and tomorrow I have a poppy commission to create so brace yourself - more poppies will be blooming very soon!

I had a visit to the studio today by a very nice couple who took home a large poppy painting, which I took as a sign that I needed to paint....poppies! This new small work has nice deep edges and if I were smarter with the camera, I'd also include a photo of the edge looking all painted. Unfortunately, my photography skills are on a par with my cooking skills. I can tear open a bag of Cocoa Chex Mix snack bites like a pro! There are no poppies blooming in my yard this week, only flowers, and green grass, which I find a bit depressing because I am ready for....snow!

I decide what to paint each day as almost the last step before picking up the brush. I mix most of my colors directly on the canvas, with the color reaction occurring when the brush picks up the hue beneath and around where it touches the surface. I intentionally staged some orange on blue in Blue Monday Lilies, can you tell where I did that? You as the artist have the tools to create drama in your paintings, find opportunities in your floral setups to lay brilliant complements atop one another. Lay a stroke of pure color and fight the urge to blend it away. Don't turn down the volume, turn it up. Let your color sing!

Love Always Lily and Rose Container Garden is the newest work in Flower Mound Studio, and was finished around 3 am. If it weren't for caffeine, I'm not quite sure I could have pulled this off! It's been a few days since I painted, and I just returned from one of the best Thanksgiving meals ever at Mom's house. My sisters and our family have so much to be thankful for, another year with Mom, being at the top of that list. Here's wishing you a wonderful holiday with lots of delicious things to eat and loved ones nearby!

My January class is filling up fast so register today -

Pansy Paparazzi and Sunflowers was my class demo this morning, in Day 2 of my 3-day workshop at the Jaycee Parks Center for the Arts. This afternoon in our class paint-along, the ladies created beautiful blue filigree white China sugar bowls. We sacrificed the one remaining white pansy on the pot of blossoms I brought to class from my back yard garden. But it gave itself for a good cause, to be memorialized in oils for all time! (Can you tell I'm still feeling bad about picking that little pansy off the plant?) Tomorrow I am very excited, I will be painting white hydrangeas, white roses, and holly berries in my NEW RED VASE the Carlos picked up for me today. *sound of trumpets* If this doesn't kick our paintbrushes into holiday gear, nothing will! Except, of course, for a little eggnog.... Stay tuned to my art blog for more class pictures, red vases, holiday themed paintings, and workshop fun.

Fenced Blue Irises is another new work in Flower Mound Studio, based on the cottage gardens of Coronado, California. I love infusing a bit of mystery into my gardens, leaving the greens in the background unfinished in some respects, inviting the viewer to fill in the blanks with their imagination.

If I were on this path, I would love to end up at a small wood frame home with a white wicker swing on the front porch, a perfect respite from busy suburbia, with windows open to a breeze and some happy little critters there to greet me. Where does this path take you? Grab some flowers along the way, we can put them in water on the kitchen table when you arrive.

What do you get when you mix ladies from Tennessee, West Virginia, Louisiana, Missouri, Arkansas, Kentucky, Mississippi, Georgia and Texas all in one space with lots of flowers, sweet (pronounced SUH-WEET) iced tea, some tubes of paint and four dozen gourmet cake donuts? You get a Rowdy Art Class, that's what! My first ever art class out of state, and my first ever art class in Tennessee, is under way and we struck gold with the fresh flowers here in the Collierville-Germantown suburb of Memphis. The Kroger is the size of the State of Connecticut, and my fabulous gal pal host Carolyn Brown called ahead for arrangements of every blossom that has ever made my heart go pitty pat to be ready and waiting for class to begin Thursday. Sing to Me Poppies is drying on the easel (yet another painting named for a song that is running about in my head today), as the poppy parade continues in Flower Mound Studio. Today on the art blog I'm sharing a mini tour of my studio, and you are in such great luck, since Studio Director AnnieBee is in residence. It's not often we are all graced with her solo presence, since she rarely enters or exits a room without her minions at her heels. Today her brothers and her sisters were busy helping Dad hold down the couch during the football game, so AnnieBee had the substantive job of keeping me completely on track and organized. Grab a glass of iced tea and a cookie from the kitchen, and enjoy the tour!

I painted poppies again today, the poppy siren song I've been heeding lately here in Flower Mound Studio is not quite finished. I wanted to take a loose approach, so I started with a slightly rough surface, adding texture to my gesso. I placed large, quick patches of some cool transparents for the greens, and then red transparents for the flowers. I had to work quickly to get everything blended before the colors dried. The last flower on my hydrangea plant is almost faded, and I'll be in the garden today, planting this one in the ground to give it another chance next season.
