"In The Cool Of Winter" - Thaw Malin iii

"In The Cool Of Winter"

"In The Cool Of Winter", this is a small painting, 6" x 8", oil on canvas panel.

I was late scouting for a location to paint and got here at Cove Road just at sundown. With no more light on land and water reflecting sky, both water and sky were luminesce. Silhouettes began to form the land as color and detail receded…

The value of this work of art is $550 USD, but, as my gift to you, for the 7 days of the auction each piece is in from the day it is created, you may start bidding at $100 (before the price becomes $550)… This is my way of saying thank you for enjoying my work and keeping me creating new ones almost everyday. Your interest stimulates and inspires me and has made me a better painter for it.

If you think you'd like to purchase this piece, please click Go to my Auction, bidding starts at $100.00 USD.

"Abandoned" - Thaw Malin iii

"Abandoned"

"Abandoned", this is a small painting, 6" x 8", oil on canvas panel.

This abandoned boat by the Old Hunt Place has caught my eye for a few months. With the fog coming in and out, then in again, it seemed like a good, overcast day to paint here. I found some bluebirds on the way and otters and a large flock of Canada Geese patrolling along the waterway behind the dunes. All the while I was serenaded by the sounds of surf just over the horizon...

"Sheriff's Meadow Fog" - Thaw Malin iii

"Sheriff's Meadow Fog"

"Sheriff's Meadow Fog", this is a small painting, 6" x 8", oil on canvas panel.

Living in town for the winter has its bonuses like walking to the movies or a restaurant. But when I start to miss all the open fields and water views of Chilmark and up-island, I remember I have access to this little sanctuary behind the house. I have done 10 or 20 paintings around Sheriff's Meadow over the years. Yet, when I think I have "found" the last painting I could ever create here, up pops something new due to weather, season, time of day, light, or in this case pruning and mowing off the path. I left for a walk around the pond a half hour before sunset. Usually I would carry my gear with me. This evening, fog was rolling by, there would be no sunset just a darkening of the daylight. So I walked empty handed. Half way 'round the pond proper is a spillway, bridge and this view of Butler's Mudhole. Much tree damage had happened due to the last 2 storms. The caretaker's clean up included brush cutting around and under an old, damaged willow to a dry bit of grass by the property edge. Stepping there to photo this view I knew I had a new painting to do. Having raced back to the house/studio to get my paints, I set up quickly and worked down from the horizon starting with the hedge and little bathhouse with my largest brush. Landscapes are fairly quick to paint, if you think about them for a minute. Most brush movement is horizontal, stopping only to clean brush and mix and change colors. The one thing which stops a quick landscape is a strong vertical item in the scene, requiring cutting in around the object and thus ceasing the flow of brushwork. The bathhouse, the only vertical, was tiny and did not slow me down. I saved the sky until last, in case it caught a blush of color as the sun set off in the fog. Canada Geese arrived in "v" formations looking for a place to bed. I held my ground until last light when geese moved into pond and fog rendered me invisible…

"Winter Marsh, Sengekontacket" - Thaw Malin iii

"Winter Marsh, Sengekontacket"

"Winter Marsh, Sengekontacket", this is a small painting, 6" x 8", oil on canvas panel.

The sign by the parking lot said this was a duck hunting area this month. There were no other vehicles about. I parked and walked the short distance to the boat launch. No sooner was I at the water's edge than bang, bang, bang, bank, bang, bang, bang from the opposite shore. I guess either the time was ripe to fire or I had just stirred up a flock of ducks, or someone was really mad that I had appeared upon the scene. Luckily shot gun pellets could not travel that far, but it sure was loud. I walked back to my van as it started to drizzle and proceeded to back up to the water so the driver's side was facing where I wanted to paint. I got out to put my gear from back seat to front and bang bang bang again. I never did see any ducks take to the air. Maybe they were all dead or the hunter was still mad. I managed to bag this view without further incident except for the on and off rain drops...

"Hot Summer Day" - Thaw Malin iii

"Hot Summer Day"

"Hot Summer Day", this is a small painting, 6" x 8", oil on canvas panel.

This was the first day of summer. The weather obliged. The skies were blue and the temperature went from the 60's yesterday to the mid 80's this day. And did I mention that there was a breeze to keep the bugs at bay!...

"Evening Fog" - Thaw Malin iii

"Evening Fog"

"Evening Fog", this is a small painting, 6" x 8", oil on canvas panel.

I drove right by this tranquil scene, the fog was so thick. When I rounded the bend in the road, I could just make out this boat. I turn about and was able to park and get this painting mostly done. Then I noticed car headlights going past getting brighter and brighter. Or was the evening getting darker and darker...

"On My Walk" - Thaw Malin iii

"On My Walk"

"On My Walk", this is a small painting, 6" x 8", oil on canvas panel.

I pass this house a few times a week on my winter's daily walk. It always makes me smile when I come upon it. Sometimes there are otter in the little saltwater estuary and sometimes duck and now a chorus of red wing blackbirds. At low tide the pond is mostly empty and high can fill it to the brim. I won't try to paint this again until fall as the poison ivy is leafing out and it was up to my waist where I stood...

Edge of the Wood - Thaw Malin iii

"Edge Of The Wood"

"Edge of The Wood", this is a small painting, 6" x 8", oil on canvas panel.

End of The Bend - Thaw Malin iii

"End Of The Bend"

"End of The Bend", this is a small painting, 6" x 8", oil on canvas panel.

This is from the eastern end of Bend-In-The-Road Beach. Erosion is bad along this stretch of sand. The dunes on the right are in their 3rd reincarnation, having been rebuilt for the second time last year. Nor'Easters have no mercy here. I beat the fog while working on this painting. Forty-five minutes later, even the first little pond was covered in mist...

Swans, Black Point - Thaw Malin iii

"Swans Black Point"

Sengekontacket Pond Marsh - Thaw Malin iii

"Sengekontacket Pond Marsh"

"Sengekontacket Pond Marsh", this is a small painting, 6" x 8", oil on canvas panel.

Sengekontacket is an American Indian name meaning “at the bursting forth of the tidal stream". This is a large Great Pond held in check by a long narrow and curved barrier beach between it and the Vineyard Sound. As storms and tides opened and closed this pond to the sea occasionally during a year, two permanent openings were finally dug. They were lined with stone jetties, and bridges were erected. Both bridges, the road and the bike path over them are just out of view to the right. Much more pond is to the left and straight beyond the pines. In waning winter sunlight, these marsh grasses glow among the bushes in the foreground and the dark shapes of the pines beyond...

Eel Pond 1892 - Thaw Malin iii

"Eel Pond 1892"

"Eel Pond 1892", this is a small painting, 6" x 8", oil on canvas panel.

In 1892 this was the northwestern most edge of Eel Pond in Edgartown, Mass. The southeastern most corner was and still is about where the houses stop on the left of the far shore. 120 years of storms and Nor'Easters have eroded away, opened, and pushed the eastern edge of the pond into itself. A small, sheltered anchorage for shallow draft boats is all that is left of the once large saltwater great pond...

Sandplain Dunes - Thaw Malin iii

"Sandplain Dunes"

"Sandplain Dunes", this is a small painting, 6" x 8", oil on canvas panel.

I went off the path to find this location. The dunes were the highest landmark along this flat sandplain. As it went down, the sun gave its warmth and color to the winter landscape. I stayed out until I found myself working in the moonlight...

Out Of Service - Thaw Malin iii

"Out Of Service"

"Out Of Service", this is a small painting, 6" x 8", oil on canvas panel.

Sometimes I go out to paint a subject I have seen before, but come back with a completely different composition. I haven't left the sky out of an image recently and I like the low view angle with not even the top of the horizon showing...

Shallow Berth - Thaw Malin iii

"Shallow Berth"

"Shallow Berth", this is a small painting, 6" x 8", oil on canvas panel.

I discovered this oyster boat when out on a Christmas walk. Tisbury Great Pond is so flooded with fresh water that it has been washing into the parking area. Normally this pond skiff would be anchored out past the grasses and I would be standing right where it is now to create this painting. Soon, I hope, a backhoe will amble down the barrier beach and cut a trench from the pond to the ocean. The great pond will drain out some and the tides will come in and bring more salinity to this brackish water. Then the oysters will have a better, saltier taste...

Far Meadow - Thaw Malin iii

"Far Meadow"

"Far Meadow", this is a small painting, 6" x 8", oil on canvas panel.

I almost missed the color changes in these mash grasses, as they turn from green through orange and gold then brown and silver. Soon enough, beside sky and cloud, the cool blue water will remain the sole enchanting dancer in the land and sea of winterscape...

Moon Full - Thaw Malin iii

"Moon Full"

"Moon Full", this is a small painting, 6" x 8", oil on canvas panel.

I sort of knew where the moon would rise when I started this piece. But, I really didn't. I hadn't done a compass reading, nor looked at the astronomical chart. I was glad it wasn't off in the pines to the right as I might never have seen it until too late...

Going Going Gone by Judy Crowe

Going, Going, Gone! by Judy Crowe

Well Hi Everyone,  As the name of this post implies, I have been going, going, going.  Wow.  Time to stay home and get some things done here.  The following are studies that I have done on recent plein air trips.  What a great opportunity to be able to paint outside in the open air.  Whenever I look at these studies, I can remember the exact time of day, the way I felt, the smells, the sounds, the wonderful encounters with people and otherwise....(critters).  The top painting is the beautiful Louisiana bayou as was the last study of the marsh.  The middle study (not the greatest photo) was from the Teton Valley near a place called Moose Creek.  The weather that day could not decide on whether to be cloudy, rainy, or sunny so I stuck with the first thing I got when I set up to paint, cloudy with sprinkles.  I wore my friend Kathy's bear bells that day....and was on constant lookout for them.  They are everywhere.  There is some discussion between locals there whether the bear bells let the bears know you are there and to stay away from humanoids or whether they send the message...'hm there is a human around with backpack and food!'.  So I kept my eyes pealed.  :)  Next week I'll be working on 'tweaking' some of my other studies done last month and also I will start to post my small works to finish off my 50 / 50 project..just in time for Christmas.  Thanks as always for allowing me into your digital life via this blog!
As always, you can contact me via my website, or contact info on my website.  Thank you!!
