Surprise

Surprise

I was painting away in the studio one day last week, when one of my studio mates bought me some peonies from Trader Joe's.  What a nice surprise.  They were stunning.  I had to paint them, and here's my results.  Below are a couple of photos of the set-up and the painting in progress.

Thanks for looking at my blog...if you are interested in this painting, or have any comments, please feel free to contact me.  This painting will be framed up after it dries.  Kay

Peonies, Please by Kay Wyne

Peonies, Please
24" x 24" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Still Life Painting
"Peonies, Please" is now completed!  The beautiful white ceramic vase were provided by one of our studio mates, Robin, and the tablecloths were contributed by Sharon.  The vase alone was fun and pretty.  The arrangement of peonies were absolutely beautiful with stunning colors and beautifully shaped petals. I worked on this painting for a couple of days with the fresh flowers.  After getting called away from the studio, the flowers were long gone when I returned a couple of weeks later, so I worked from memory, and found a photograph to use as reference.

When glancing at the arrangement, at first glance the peonies were pink.  But if you really studied them, they were magenta, pink, red, coral and shades of white.  Every petal was different and interesting.  I used a #20 Bright Monarch on the whole painting....it was a birthday gift from Sharon, so I felt like I couldn't go wrong with such a great brush in hand!  This contemporary still life is very painterly...you can see the brush strokes if you get up close to the canvas.

This painting was a challenge between several artists, and it will be interesting to see what everyone created.  This painting is drying at the studio, and is available for purchase.  Contact ME for purchasing info.  Thanks for looking at my blog...Kay

"Soaking Up Sunshine" is full of color and warmth.  This contemporary still life is very painterly, as I put a my strokes of color on the canvas, I left it alone.  You can see the brush strokes, as the color is vibrant and not muddy.  This small 14" x 14" gallery wrap canvas has the sides painted, so it is ready to hang. This happy and fun still life painting would make a wonderful Christmas gift for someone....contact ME for purchasing info.  Thanks, Kay Wyne

Untitled Floral Still LIfe by Kay Wyne

Untitled Floral Still Life
16" x 20" Oil on RayMar Cotton Panel
Contemporary Palette Knife Painting
As an artist, I have many choices when I stand at my easel to paint.  I made some choices when I started with this canvas, but switched gears several times along the way.  I started out placing this canvas horizontally on my easel.  And, I painted a landscape.  I decided it wasn't working for me, so I thought that a vertical still life would work.  But I was using wide brushes, and after several days, made a switch to use a palette knife instead of a brush.  I scrapped the whole painting off, and started all over.
Here is a couple of close-up shots of the flowers.  The shapes overlap, the knife gives the paint texture and interest.  I need to put a title on this painting, let it dry and varnish it.  Contact Kay for purchasing info.  Thanks, KMW

Jar of Petals by Kay Wyne

Jar of Petals
10" x 10" Oil on RayMar Cotton Panel
Contemporary Still Life Painting
Day #8 in the 30 Paintings in 30 Days Challenge
This still life painting started with a a bouquet of fresh flowers in the studio.  The jar is full of color and the flowers are bursting out of the jar.  Lately I have been painting floral still lifes to capture the beauty and the variety of colors and shapes that I see.  I have this painting in a handsome frame, hanging at the studio.  I would also look great standing on an easel without the frame.  Contact Kay Wyne for purchasing information.  Thanks for looking at this blog...Kay

Lovely Day by Kay Wyne

Lovely Day
8" x 8" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Still Life
I have been into small still life paintings lately, and this one is drying on my easel.  I used a #12 Bright on this canvas, and was able to put down crisp, angular strokes.  No blending or fussing with it...I put a stroke of color down and left it.  I named this painting, "Lovely Day" because most person have lovely days when they give or receive bouquets of flowers.I am spending all of my time in the studio getting ready for a several juried shows and one three-woman show.  Feel free to contact me at MY EMAIL with any questions or comments.  Thanks for looking at the art posted on this blog.  Kay Wyne

Soaking Up Sunshine by Kay Wyne

Soaking Up Sunshine
14" x 14" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Floral Still Life
Thick paint applied with a new wide brush made this painting so much fun to paint.  Up until the last few strokes, the vase was square in shape, but with the background window pains, I though it was all too angular.  So I changed it up.  The 14" x 14" canvas size is a nice medium size---you wouldn't think that there is much difference between a 12" x 12" and this size...but there is a huge difference.  This contemporary still life is colorful, bold, and happy.  Contact Kay Wyne for purchasing info.  Thanks for looking at the art posted on this blog.  KAY

Jar of Petals by Kay Wyne

Jar of Petals
10" x 10" Oil on RayMar Cotton Panel
Contemporary Oil Painting
My color palette is very vibrant in this painting....which I just completed in the studio.  It is too hot to paint outside in Texas under the hot July sun.  I had fun with this one....I wanted all of the flowers to sing with color.  Here is a pic of my palette that I was working from.
There is more brushwork than palette knife on this panel.  I wanted my colors to be bright, vivid and intense.  This painting will be drying in the studio, then I will frame.  Contact ME if you have any comments or have an interest in purchasing.  Thanks for looking....Kay Wyne

I finished this painting at the studio, and popped it in this beautiful frame.  It is a seamless (no mitered corners) and is slightly distressed with a satin finish.  There are so many shades of corals, pinks, greys and greens in this painting.  I used a flat brush to apply the oils.  Contact Kay Wyne for purchasing information.  Thanks for looking at this blog....Kay

Sitting Pretty by Kay Wyne

Sitting Pretty
12" x 12" Oil on Canvas
Contemporary Floral Still Life
$575
This small painting was completed in the studio yesterday.  I need to sign it and let dry before framing it up.  I had lots of great colors on my palette, and loved playing with the roses, reds, corals, violets and greys.  My intention was to get the palette knife out, but stuck with my flat brush.    I mixed and mixed my colors for this painting, but was careful not to mix them on the canvas, just  putting the paint down, and not going back into it, making each stroke count.   Contact Kay for more info on this small floral arrangement.  Thanks, Kay

Tickled Pink by Kay Wyne

Tickled Pink
18" x 24" Oil on Gallery Wrap
Contemporary Palette Knife Painting
Contact Kay for more info on this painting.
Tickled Pink is a palette knife painting that has very thick players of paint on the canvas. I loved mixing the piles of gooey oils in orange, pink, lavender and corals for this contemporary palette knife painting.  I had painted a similar painting several months ago, but it was lacking in depth, so this is my answer to that issue!!!  This is a close-up shot of the painting so that you can see the body and thick build-up of the oils.
Thanks for looking at my art....I hope we are finished with the snow and ice...more painting in the studio tomorrow.  Have an artful day!  Kay
