"Woods Hole" - Thaw Malin iii

"Woods Hole"

"Woods Hole", this is a small painting, 6" x 8", oil on canvas panel.

I had three location choices for this painting. One required a long walk through woods and maybe snow drifts to arrive at a long beach walk. Two was a short beach walk. Three was possibly traveling down an un-snow-plowed lane and a walk down 5 or 6 stories of beach stairs. I attempted #3 first. The lane was plowed as was the parking lot. Snow on the stairs was almost non existent. I dallied on top taking scouting photos and checking for wind and temperature. Deciding on full winter attire, I returned to my van to gear up. I grabbed the rest of my coffee, a chocolate bite and container of mixed nuts to fuel my furnace as I painted. I descended down the stairs, stopping at each landing for more precision photos of potential views. The last landing was a killer. I was trapped 20 feet above the beach. Winter storms had left only steep, weeping-wet clay between me and the sands below where once was the bottom most set of stairs. I had stepped in clay like that before. Not only is it slippery on an incline, but it sticks to everything it touches like honey, in a bad sort of way. On the beach directly beneath were more boulders at the waters edge casting great, long, blue shadows from the waning sun. I just couldn't reach them. As I worked, the sun set and lights across the way in Woods Hole slowly flickered on. They were soon followed by the lights of the evening ferryboat chugging into its homeport…

"Short Beach Light" - Thaw Malin iii

"Short Beach Light"

"Short Beach Light", this is a small painting, 6" x 8", oil on canvas panel.

The first sunny evening in a while found me on the shores of Menemsha Pond. These rocks reflected back the last few minutes of the sun's golden light before it set. Under these conditions at this time of year, the pond has a particular blue sheen as it reflects the evening sky…

"Menemsha Pond" - Thaw Malin iii

"Menemsha Pond"

"Menemsha Pond", this is a small painting, 6" x 8", oil on canvas panel.

The gray sky from the last few days and the wet weather have accentuated what colors there are in the winter landscape. Darks are darker and they push the lights to seem lighter. Everything will change once the sun comes back, drying the darks to a lighter value and adding shadows and bright light areas. Right now, I can't wait…

"In The Autumn" - Thaw Malin iii

"In The Autumn"

"In The Autumn", this is a small painting, 6" x 8", oil on canvas panel.

The temperature has been dropping along with rain and leaves as the color of the land slowly changes from greens, reds, golds, oranges, browns to lavenders and grays. The setting sun, although moved from north of west to south of west still casts its charm upon the unsuspecting evenings. Drab views attain a golden radiance at this hour, mostly unsurpassed in summer months. Sights, unseen in green, now come slowly forth as the backbone of the ridges, hills and vales appear. As we dream about our gardens past, the season shifts and we are thankful, once again…

"Weather Moves In" - Thaw Malin iii

"Weather Moves In"

"Weather Moves In", this is a small painting, 6" x 8", oil on canvas panel.

The sky was almost clear as I began this painting. It rapidly turned into another type of day as I worked to finish this by sundown. It was low tide and the beach had eaten into the dunes and cliffs another 5 feet since I last was here in spring…

"Coming and Going" - Thaw Malin iii

"Coming And Going"

"Coming and Going", this is a small painting, 6" x 8", oil on canvas panel.

One ferryboat went by me before I got the hint that maybe they were my subject for the day. It was nice to have 2 tries to capture each one as they passed by in the shipping lanes every hour or so...

"West Chop" - Thaw Malin iii

"West Chop"

"West Chop", this is a small painting, 6" x 8", oil on canvas panel.

I have been studying this area during evening hours until dark for possibly larger paintings to create. There are nice ways to get out of the wind here and great sky-dome sunset light. Besides sea and sky, there are other less obvious foils to play off between me and the horizon. Besides juggling, wind, tide, hour and image it is now the season to factor in biting insects as well...

"Trial Run" - Thaw Malin iii

"Trial Run"

"Trial Run", this is a small painting, 6" x 8", oil on canvas panel.

I came near the harbor hoping for a sail to paint. This obliging boat appeared and reappeared a few times. She was capturing some good air. I was in the lee with enough breeze to keep away the newly hatched no-see-ums and mosquitoes. A very pleasant afternoon...

"Evening Fog" - Thaw Malin iii

"Evening Fog"

"Evening Fog", this is a small painting, 6" x 8", oil on canvas panel.

I drove right by this tranquil scene, the fog was so thick. When I rounded the bend in the road, I could just make out this boat. I turn about and was able to park and get this painting mostly done. Then I noticed car headlights going past getting brighter and brighter. Or was the evening getting darker and darker...

"Sailing Lambert's Cove" - Thaw Malin iii

"Sailing Lambert's Cove"

"Sailing Lambert's Cove", this is a small painting, 6" x 8", oil on canvas panel.

The joy of spring is that one never knows what to expect around the next bend, as the season turns toward summer. I had no thoughts of a sailboat appearing as I started this painting. Now I may start to anticipate sailboats as I move on to newer water views...

"Rocks Remain" - Thaw Malin iii

"Rocks Remain"

"Rocks Remain", this is a small painting, 6" x 8", oil on canvas panel.

It was a warm and beautiful day. I went to the beach to watch the light dim, the colors turn to gray and the waves lull me from evening into night...

Spring Fog - Thaw Malin iii

"Spring Fog"

"Spring Fog", this is a small painting, 6" x 8", oil on canvas panel.

A rainy blowing evening sitting in my van while painting the rock strewn beach. The fog added mystery and the rain intensity of color to the scene. All was appreciated from the dry warmth of the driver's seat with my easel in my lap...

Lighthouse Beach - Thaw Malin iii

"Lighthouse Beach"

"Lighthouse Beach", this is a small painting, 6" x 8", oil on canvas panel.

This was a fishing and painting expedition. Robin and I walked about 3/4 mile down the beach to get to the fishing hole and the painting spot. The weather was calm, but the tide was near low. I mostly painted while she fished. We caught a lot of seaweed salad for dinner... Oh well, at least I have the painting to show for the effort...

After Summer - Thaw Malin iii

"After Summer"

"After Summer", this is a small painting, 6" x 8", oil on canvas panel.

It is always a bit sad to see the lifeguard stand empty, no one on the beach and fishermen working the shore and jetty. Fall seems to come too quickly with its riotous color palette and warm afternoons. But soon enough the colors will turn to grays and the air will chill...

Crumbling Cliff - Thaw Malin iii

"Crumbling Cliff"

"Crumbling Cliff", this is a small painting, 6" x 8", oil on canvas panel.

I have not been to this beach for a few months, nor since the storm came through. It is amazing how much was eroded by the large sea and wind which swept past. I have gone back to view paintings I made on the beach in the winter of 1995 and the loss of cliff is really noticeable. It is like 2 feet per year in many places. Boulders I would paint next to then are in the surf zone now. It was great to be in the sand working with the sound of a heavy surf muffling all other thoughts until a rogue wave washed up around my easel's legs...

Waiting - Thaw Malin iii

"Waiting"

"Waiting", this is a small painting, 6" x 8", oil on canvas panel.

This is a plain white dinghy I have been scouting and photographing for a few months each time I travel up to the Gay Head Cliffs. It can be a very buggy place to paint if the wind is not right. The sun was not correct today for me as it slid behind a thunderstorm disturbance as soon as I got there. However, the bugs were almost non-existant which made my day...
