"Woods Hole" - Thaw Malin iii

"Woods Hole"

"Woods Hole", this is a small painting, 6" x 8", oil on canvas panel.

I had three location choices for this painting. One required a long walk through woods and maybe snow drifts to arrive at a long beach walk. Two was a short beach walk. Three was possibly traveling down an un-snow-plowed lane and a walk down 5 or 6 stories of beach stairs. I attempted #3 first. The lane was plowed as was the parking lot. Snow on the stairs was almost non existent. I dallied on top taking scouting photos and checking for wind and temperature. Deciding on full winter attire, I returned to my van to gear up. I grabbed the rest of my coffee, a chocolate bite and container of mixed nuts to fuel my furnace as I painted. I descended down the stairs, stopping at each landing for more precision photos of potential views. The last landing was a killer. I was trapped 20 feet above the beach. Winter storms had left only steep, weeping-wet clay between me and the sands below where once was the bottom most set of stairs. I had stepped in clay like that before. Not only is it slippery on an incline, but it sticks to everything it touches like honey, in a bad sort of way. On the beach directly beneath were more boulders at the waters edge casting great, long, blue shadows from the waning sun. I just couldn't reach them. As I worked, the sun set and lights across the way in Woods Hole slowly flickered on. They were soon followed by the lights of the evening ferryboat chugging into its homeport…

The value of this work of art is $550 USD, but, as my gift to you, for the 7 days of the auction each piece is in from the day it is created, you may start bidding at $100 (before the price becomes $550)… This is my way of saying thank you for enjoying my work and keeping me creating new ones almost everyday. Your interest stimulates and inspires me and has made me a better painter for it.

"Foggy Shore" - Thaw Malin iii

"Foggy Shore"

"Foggy Shore", this is a small painting, 6" x 8", oil on canvas panel.

The fog was coming in as I painted. It gave me just enough time to get all the details done before it got too overcast to finish. I always enjoy a good challenge…

"Cola Creek" - Thaw Malin iii

"blank Cola Creek"

"blank Cola Creek", this is a small painting, 6" x 8", oil on canvas panel.

This little stream is known locally as blank Cola Creek. In the autumn when the leaves and acorns fall, a lot get washed into this water shed. Their tannin turns the water the color of blank Cola... (you fill in the blank)

Layabouts - Thaw Malin iii

"Layabouts"

"Layabouts", this is a small painting, 6" x 8", oil on canvas panel.

The last time I painted here, the tide crept up my boots as I blithely worked away. It was going out this time, but my lesson had been learned. This was an overcast, slightly rainy day, which happened to turn from gray toward blue as the sun went down. I never know in this situation whether to paint the sky in first or to hold off in case it goes way beyond expectation. Today I painted first and found it the correct choice as I watched it deteriorate while I finished my work...

A Grand Entrance - Thaw Malin iii

"A Grand Entrance"

"A Grand Entrance", this is a small painting, 6" x 8", oil on canvas panel.

I try not to paint at the same place too often, but the sounds of the waves brought me back to the beach. This path is the only way to walk down to this section of beach, but what a view awaits. Even with this year's salt burt colors of the local vegetation, it is a beautiful place...

Lighthouse Beach - Thaw Malin iii

"Lighthouse Beach"

"Lighthouse Beach", this is a small painting, 6" x 8", oil on canvas panel.

This was a fishing and painting expedition. Robin and I walked about 3/4 mile down the beach to get to the fishing hole and the painting spot. The weather was calm, but the tide was near low. I mostly painted while she fished. We caught a lot of seaweed salad for dinner... Oh well, at least I have the painting to show for the effort...

Crumbling Cliff - Thaw Malin iii

"Crumbling Cliff"

"Crumbling Cliff", this is a small painting, 6" x 8", oil on canvas panel.

I have not been to this beach for a few months, nor since the storm came through. It is amazing how much was eroded by the large sea and wind which swept past. I have gone back to view paintings I made on the beach in the winter of 1995 and the loss of cliff is really noticeable. It is like 2 feet per year in many places. Boulders I would paint next to then are in the surf zone now. It was great to be in the sand working with the sound of a heavy surf muffling all other thoughts until a rogue wave washed up around my easel's legs...

Surf's Up - Thaw Malin iii

"Surfs Up"

"Surf's Up", this is a small painting, 6" x 8", oil on canvas panel.

I went back to yesterday's location to paint a landscape view behind the dunes and cliffs. Not only was it not raining but the surf was so much more impressive than the day before. I abandoned my plans and concentrated on the seascape from the cliff tops...

Rollers - Thaw Malin iii

"Rollers"

"Rollers", this is a small painting, 6" x 8", oil on canvas panel.

Rain came down most of the day. When it wasn't rain it was mist or drizzle. Radar showed there might be an hour window of just plain clouds, no moisture, toward the end of the day. I took the chance, scouting when I got to this beach using my iPhone camera to take photos. I went back to the van to get my paints and mull over the photos. No sooner was the door shut than it poured. I was able to manipulate the van into a painting position and worked until dark with the wipers on and off and on and off. It was a grand sea out there. Big rollers were continually pitched against the cliffs below, probably from the force of a nearing tropical depression. It was tempting to jump in, but for the fact that I was alone and the cliff stair was missing the bottom 2/3rds steps...

Beach Boxes - Thaw Malin iii

"Beach Boxes"

"Beach Boxes", this is a small painting, 6" x 8", oil on canvas panel.

Some would call these boat houses, others beach shacks. Here on the Mornington Peninsula, Victoria, Australia, the locals call these beach boxes. They are generally used to house beach towels and chairs, windsurfers, kayaks, fishing rods, grills etc. All are painted bright colors to help distinguish them from each other. I had hoped to paint a closer image of them, but the ocean had hauled away sand and cliff last year. The powers that be were moving in new sand and boulders to try to rebuild the beach and surrounding bluffs. My present view was somewhat blocked at this end of the shore...

Shadows Shorten - Thaw Malin iii

"Shadows Shorten"

"Shadows Shorten", this is a small painting, 6" x 8", oil on canvas panel.

I was out the door very early trying to capture the late setting, almost-full moon. Finally at this west end of the island, I still couldn't line it up with anything worth while without lying about it. (That means more than just using my artistic license!) So I stumbled up the stairs to the observation area to look out on the dawn fishing fleet down below and the moon as it fled towards N. Y. City. There, the lighthouse looked kind of cool all in shadow...

Another Day - Thaw Malin iii

"Another Day"

"Another Day", this is not quite so small a painting, 9" x 12", oil on canvas panel.

Note: I ran out of my usual small panels. This is a 9" x 12" painting (larger than my normal 6" x 8")... A beautiful evening to be painting above a cliff as the sun settles over the horizon. Waves lap against the sand below. A Northern Harrier swoops low overhead on a flight across to Nomans Island in front of me. I stayed even after I could see no more to paint. The water colors at this time of evening against a fading sky have been spectacular for the past few nights. I am preparing myself to do a piece this late in the day, but the light gives me no chance to mix the colors I want. It is just too dark to see color, only values on a gray scale...
