High Tide Morning | Seascape by Rebecca Zook

Art Therapy
Post 6

I wouldn't mind the repetitious, calming waves or smell of salt air or searching for shells and sand dollars on an abandoned beach far away.

High Tide Morning
24" x 36" | Acrylic on Panel

The first light of day skims over the water. You feel the roar of the ocean. The scent of salt awakes your mind. Never-ending waves wash over the rocks then recede, leaving swirling, foamy trails in their wake before advancing again. You have been captured by the sea.

Abalone Shell by Kristine Kainer

Oil on Gallery Wrapped Canvas
20 x 20 x 1.325
Purchase Information

One of the most mesmerizing of shells is the abalone. As a child, I had a large one (purchased in a beach gift shop during a family vacation in Nagshead, North Carolina). I kept my favorite pieces of jewelry in it for years. Sadly, it disappeared some time after I graduated from college (any ideas, Mom?) and I’ve always regretted not having one to paint. (If you are familiar with my work, I ADORE painting sea shells.) Recently, however, I acquired a “new” abalone shell. Look out, world—this is my first abalone painting, but it won’t be my last!

Lobster Bubble Bath by Texas Coastal Artist Kristine Kainer

Lobster Bubble Bath
Copyright Kristine Kainer 2014
9x12
Oil on Gessobord
Purchase Information

What is more sinfully delectable than a lobster or more relaxing than a bubble bath?  How about the two combined?

This painting is a definite departure for me.  Whimsical in nature, it combines my love of lobster (I'm anxiously awaiting our Lobstergram delivery next week for my daughter's fifteenth birthday here in land-locked Austin, TX) and the joys of a bubble bath in an old clawfoot tub in our 1928 farmhouse.

This painting is a second birthday gift for my dad, Lt. Col. Peter G. Scharf, USMC-Ret.  It is a companion piece to my previous post of a clam shell.  Dad is now enjoying both in his home in Florida.  Happy Birthday once again, Dad!

Another oyster.  Another delicious meal last month--slathered in cocktail sauce, horseradish (can anyone find "Gold's Horseradish" in their supermarkets?  I MUST HAVE SOME!), and the squirt of a lemon.  Briny goodness....

Sand Dollar by Kristine Kainer

Oil on Gallery-Wrapped Canvas
20x16

With temperatures already in the upper 90s in Central Texas, my thoughts turn to the sights, sounds, tastes, and smells of the beach.  Oh, to feel the sand between my toes!  Alas, this painting helps me dream.

Oil
12x12

This little sand dollar was found on a beach near Galveston, Texas during a family vacation.  The original painting is on stretched, gallery-wrapped canvas and is square (12 x 12).  The sides are 5/8" thick and are painted to match the background; thus, framing is optional.

"Winter Field" - Thaw Malin iii

"Winter Field"

"Winter Field", this is a small painting, 6" x 8", oil on canvas panel.

This view of the Allen Farm, across the field and out to sea, while usually warm and inviting, was today cold and windblown. I stepped out of my vehicle to gather my paints and stepped back in quickly to paint from the warmth of the van. As the shadows of the cedars along the fence line lengthened and finally engulfed the field with blue, I thought about the warmth of summers past, swimming and napping on the distant beach. My daydream collapsed as a car pulled up beside me and Robin jumped out bearing the gift of an unscheduled hot chocolate… Yum!

The value of this work of art is $550 USD, but, as my gift to you, for the 7 days of the auction each piece is in from the day it is created, you may start bidding at $100 (before the price becomes $550)… This is my way of saying thank you for enjoying my work and keeping me creating new ones almost everyday. Your interest stimulates and inspires me and has made me a better painter for it.

"Light, Snow, Shadows" - Thaw Malin iii

"Light, Snow, Shadows"

"Light, Snow, Shadows", this is a small painting, 6" x 8", oil on canvas panel.

After the February storm, the sun came out. It warmed up enough to paint outside without gloves for about an hour before I had to slip them on. The sky was brilliant blue and the snow shadows reflected the blue of space above. It felt great to be out painting in windless winter air…

"Bait Barrels" - Thaw Malin iii

"Bait Barrels"

"Bait Barrels", this is a small painting, 6" x 8", oil on canvas panel.

It was cold and blowing outside. I stayed in my van and painted this scene. Just before, my fisherman friend left his vessel and headed home for the day. The harbor remained quiet. As I worked a detail of US Coast Guardsmen and k-9 marched behind me out to their boat for practice maneuvers…

"Between Bridges" - Thaw Malin iii

"Between Bridges"

"Between Bridges", this is a small painting, 6" x 8", oil on canvas panel.

I thought I wouldn't paint today, as I hadn't settled on an appropriate view and sun was about down. I had no one behind me when I reached this stretch of road and beach between Oak Bluffs and Edgartown. I slowed way down, stopped, took one photo and turned right around and came back to this vantage point. It is maybe 8 feet more above sea level than any other part along the beach section of the road, and every foot counts when trying to get an over view of Sengekontacket Pond. Even though time was short, I knew I could block this image in and finish from memory back in the studio. And then, suddenly, drama happened! The sky streaked orange and the sun tried to pop out under the cloud bank…

"January Fog" - Thaw Malin iii

"January Fog"

"January Fog", this is a small painting, 6" x 8", oil on canvas panel.

Warm, but windy, had me in the lee of the low cliffs by the Herring Creek on Menemsha Pond. Besides bobbing Red-breasted Mergansers and swooping seagulls, the fog wrapped me up in silence. The tide was low and the boulders had soft edges in the shadowless light. When finished, I rewarded myself with a chocolate chip cooky from just up the road at Orange Peel Bakery…

"Winter Boat" - Thaw Malin iii

"Winter Boat"

"Winter Boat", this is a small painting, 6" x 8", oil on canvas panel.

Today I thought I wouldn't get any painting done. Last night, while doing some demolition on our soon to be home and studio, I accidentally hit my thumb with a hammer and large pry-bar against a wall stud. I had gloves on and no one heard me swear! It was not until I awoke this am that I realized I should see my doctor, and then X-ray at the hospital. It really only hurts when I laugh, I mean, bend my left thumb. At a half hour before dark I left hospital and pulled over before the drawbridge to catch a view of the harbor and over towards Woods Hole before dark. I was very antsy to paint after all the cold weather these last few days and having to stay inside. I took a few requisite photos of the view, ogled some sea ducks bobbing near me and said to myself, "if I just set up my easel, something will appear to paint…". The foreground spoke to me and a ferryboat came past delivering souls to the other side which made my background! And it was just plain good to be out with my paints again… ( Now, back in the studio, the Dr. just called to alert me to a bone chip by my thumb knuckle seen in the X-ray. Oh, what will they do to me tomorrow. I can't imagine. To be continued, I hope!).…

"Snow and Ice" - Thaw Malin iii

"Snow And Ice"

"Snow and Ice", this is a small painting, 6" x 8", oil on canvas panel.

With no back up plan, I was taking my chances driving all the way out to Quansoo Beach hoping to find a view to paint. It was beautiful getting there with the fields along the way covered with recently fallen snow. At the first field I parked and took a photo of the shadows across the old farm road which bisected it. Oh, it was wicked cold out there and I knew any painting done would be from inside my van. This became crystal clear when I saw my car keys locked in the van and I had to find my hide-a-key under the car with cold, bare hands. Coming near the end of the dirt road I realized that no one had driven this far out since the snow storm two days ago. I rounded the last corner out of the scrub oak and shrubbery into the clear, grassy area next to the creek behind the dunes. What usually is a large expanse of parking by the bridge was being crowded out by the high pond and creek water level covered with a few inches of ice. It was a soft, brackish ice and I dared not cross it even just to get on the bridge. But the light was magic, reflecting evening sun off the new wood of the repaired rails and deck of the bridge. The dark, low lying snow clouds added a rich element to the lightness of snow on sand and tawny, winter's beach grass…
