Trees at Dam B are rarely seen like this. Right now there is hardly any water.

The corp of engineers are working on the dam. Where there was water has now become grass.

The tree line was fascinating to me and I decided to paint this bunch of Cypress trees.

I set up on my porch and painted what I saw.  Thus Over the fence is what you see. It was fun but hot.

I did this Plein Air at the George Ranch in Richmond,Texas. We had a group of about 25 for this outing. Four of us painted this scene and  four different ways. It was a great day for all.  The painting is framed and ready for a new home.

With eyes as big as the moon, the Great Horned Owl sees into your soul, unmasking the hidden and bringing forth wisdom. He guides you to new heights on silent wings.

Everyone in the neighborhood knew my house when I was a kid. My Dad’s giant HAM radio tower couldn’t be missed. At Christmas, it was the house with the tower topped by a Great Horned Owl. I’m not positive what attracted him there at winter only, but we used to say, it was the Christmas lights. You could see them reflected in his eyes. He’d take flight and swoop low following our street, his wingspan seemingly spanning the width of the road. Completely silent in flight. I can’t think of a Great Horned Owl without this scene coming to mind.

Like many people, I am guilty of stereotyping Texas.  I envisioned cows and cowboys, horses, tumbleweed, and cacti coexisting in a hot, dry desert climate.  Upon my first visit to the Lone Star State over twenty years ago, I realized how wrong I was!  Yes, Texas has all those stereotypes.  I didn't realize, though, that Texas has everything else as well:  beaches, rivers, forests, mountains, and yes, desert-like areas.  I also didn't realize the bounty of this vast piece of land.  Many of those spiny cacti with the occasional, gorgeous yellow blooms are prickly pears.  Despite those painful spines on their paddles, prickly pears are food!  Both the paddles and the pear-like red (sometimes yellow, sometimes green) fruit are edible and enjoyed in many cuisines--TexMex, Mexican, Latin, Spanish, AND Mediterranean--and they are delicious.  For such a "lowly" plant, what marvelous bounty and beauty it provides!
