Field of Dreams is inspired from the beautiful sunflower fields we visited in Provence, France. The flowers seemed to stretch forever and the color explosion was out of this world! Back in my studio, I worked from a combination of photos, on-site sketches and memories. Painting the sunflowers full-sized in the foreground helps to bring them to life and hopefully transport you to this happy location. Including surprising pops of vivid reds and purples keeps your eye moving throughout the scene, seeing new things each time you look at it, and adds to the joyful feeling.

Sunflowers are a pretty happy flower, at least to me they seem  happy.  I like seeing them growing and swaying the the breeze.  This painting was done in oils and measures 10" x 20". It is signed and framed for you.  The background is a very dark green.

The sunflower (Helianthus annuus) is an living annual plant in the family Asteraceae, with a large flower head (capitulum). The stem of the flower can grow up to 3 metres tall, with a flower head that can be 30 cm wide. Other types of sunflowers include the California Royal Sunflower, which has a burgundy (red + purple) flower head.

The flower head is actually an inflorescence made of hundreds or thousands of tiny flowers called florets. The central florets look like the centre of a normal flower, and the outer florets look like yellow petals. All together they make up a "false flower" or pseudanthium. The benefit to the plant is that it is very easily seen by the insects and birds which pollinate it, and it produces thousands of seeds

I am just back from my first Sonoma, California, workshop, where the sunsets were spectacular, the fresh flowers were plentiful, and you couldn't walk five feet without stumbling into a gorgeous vineyard! We painted tulips, hydrangeas, cosmos, daisies, and delphiniums and I was acclimated back to the California I love before I had even polished off a glass of red! 

Most of all, I knew immediately, while standing in line for my gourmet iced mocha coffee with extra mocha, that I was back in California. The sign at the checkout stated my selection that day was certifiably gluten free, organic, non-GMO laced, fair-trade grown, vegan, women-owned, and socially responsible. 

My next workshop is in Tuscany, Italy, and I have a few seats left so pack your wine glass and your sun hat and join me for the peak of poppy bloom! I'm saving a bowl of gelato with your name on it!

Southern Bell Sunflowers was one of my class demonstrations in Tennessee last week, and features some teal pops of color to balance the warm orange bellies of these large flowers. We had a great time in class, the students took home some prizes, new hats, and even one big grand giveaway of $1000 (in chocolate!). I'm delighted to announce I've opened another Tennessee class since the first one filled up so quickly - I hope to see you there!

There's no time like the present to try to lump all the new things to do into one month, don't you agree? I launched a new web site, print store, and blog this month. I'm still polishing the sparkly bits and fluffing the fluffy parts, but most of the links are working most of the time now!

Simultaneously my busy spring teaching and travel period has begun and I'm packing for Fredericksburg, Texas, then Tennessee, then Louisiana (again!), then Tuscany, Italy. Negotiating multiple shipments of supplies to various locations involves a lot of brain cells. Never try this on less than two shots of espresso with whippy creme. Trust me on this.

And lest I forget the most important part of my message today, my new cell phone cases and pillows are here and I just love them! Yes their kitschy and cute and probably frivolous, but gosh they're fun. I gave away a few yesterday on my Facebook fan page, and will be giving away more soon! Violet Fire Sunflower is a bright rendition of one of my favorite bloomers - sunflowers! I grew up on an organic farm in East Texas, and sunflowers were planted throughout my parents' gardens to help attract insects off the vegetable crops. I remember standing barefoot in the cool soil, gazing up at the faces of giant sunflowers. They are such a quintessential summertime flower!

I'm just home and unpacking from three days in Louisiana, sharing painting time, prizes, fresh flowers and no shortage of giggles with some lovely ladies from Alabama, Texas, Georgia, Arkansas and Louisiana. Blue Fire Sunflowers celebrates a fresh bouquet of sunnies I found at the market a few days ago, in the middle of an ice storm here in Flower Mound, Texas. I love applying a loose, vibrant mix of thick color in textured layers on a large format canvas. Something about the large size seems to really set the brush free. And Sunflowers are just about the best anti-freeze flower I can think of....

This evening I’m all packed up for my Shreveport workshop. The checklist: oils, palette, brushes, turp, canvas, flowers – the only thing I forgot to pack was a change of clothes. It wouldn’t be the first time (or the second!) I’ve arrived at a workshop without a change of clothes. I’ve learned how to wear the same sweater creatively and differently each day, add a scarf, put on an apron, the students never even noticed!

Hothouse Sunnies was one of my six class demonstrations during my flower and landscape painting workshop in North Texas this weekend. The tulips we painted are still blooming, the gift that keeps on giving and my house is filled with fresh flowers - one of the fringe benefits of being a flower painting teacher! I love my job.... Another great perk, besides helpers who are cute and furry and four-footed, is getting to travel and teach - my next European destination is coming up in June and you are invited! Painters and non-painters alike are welcome - I'm saving a poppy with your name on it!

Bright Days Sunflower was one of my class demonstrations in North Texas this weekend. Tomorrow we paint French Landscapes -oo la la! A handsome gentleman brought us lunch today, cheeses and h'ors deuvres and played lovely music for the ladies (let's just say my hubby is a good boy!).

Today the grand prize gift basket found a new home with Virginia, and tomorrow everyone gets a special take home prize, something I made for each of my students. Hmmm....what could it be. Since I cannot cook, we KNOW it's not food (or we can hope!). Visit my art bloggy for the scoop!

Violet Spotlight Sunflowers is the daily newbie in Flower Mound Studio, a departure from my French village series and return to one of my favorite subjects of all time! The chilly weather outside just seemed to call for warm colors on the canvas today. My next video shoot is coming up in just a few weeks - I'm thinking about geraniums as the subject, but haven't quite decided yet! I'll have to consult my director and her staff, once she's finished with her post second breakfast naptime break....

French Rest Stop is a new sunflower garden in Flower Mound Studio, I was needing some warm color to chase away the winter chill and fused some of my favorite photos from my back yard garden along with my trip to France together to create this little floral-scape. My adirondack chairs are bright blue, so I shifted their color to white so they wouldn't compete with my blue flower beds in the foreground. I'm imagining a nice warm summer day, with temps in the high 90s, and an icy glass of lemonade nearby...

Heat Wave Sunflowers was my class demonstration today in sunny Florida. The day started out a bit chilly, but we hit the 80 degree mark by afternoon. I don't mean to rub it in, but at one point I had to turn up the air conditioning just a bit. I'm always a bit sad on the last day of class, telling friends goodbye and telling that ultra giant box of chocolates goodbye, can you blame me if I cried just a little bit? Tomorrow it's back home to the boss, Studio Director AnnieBee, and her minions, and the hubby who said he has missed me. It's good to be loved. I hope your family, friends and little four footed babies are nearby and keeping you warm today, where-ever you may be!

The brushes are all packed for sunny Florida - I'm not quite sure how my freezing toes will react when the arrive in the sunshine state tomorrow - I'm told it's a brisk 50-ish degrees there. I seem to remember 50 degrees, vaguely, but it's a distant memory right now in freezing Texas! I was finishing up edgework on my newest French Village scene, and thought it would be fun to cut some slices or vignettes out of the overall composition, making little mini-paintings. All that's missing are the fluffy little French sheep!

Here are a few different scenes - enjoy! Stay tuned for photos from my Florida workshop this week, I'll try not to bombard you with too many beach scenes, and if I drink anything out of a coconut, I promise to save some for you!
