Daily Painters of Texas: white hydrangea flower painting

Rose of Sharon and White Hydrangeas was my seventh class demonstration at my flower painting workshop in St. Louis a few weeks ago. Eighteen students painted in oils and acrylics to produce paintings of geraniums, hydrangeas, daisies, and sunflowers during three days in the beautiful historic district near The Hill. I wanted to be sure the white hydrangeas stood out, so I made the white china pot a bit more golden and subdued. The fresh Rose of Sharon flowers were a gift from Tina, one of my talented students, and were that sweet bit of color pop that set off the whole arrangement. You can see the fresh flowers that inspired Rose of Sharon below.

A Bit of Heaven was the afternoon step by step paintalong in my workshop this afternoon. I'm always just a bit sad when a workshop ends, knowing the next morning I won't be teaching, I'll just be painting. We had a fun group of ladies in class from Texas, Louisiana and Oklahoma making yellow roses and white hydrangeas bloom in oils! I'll be posting more photos from my workshop this week, including my large demo painting below, so stay tuned to the art blog.

There is a story behind these white hydrangeas. They were the models for my painting in the garden at a Colleyville, Texas, event last week. Sitting out in the sun, they slowly but surely wilted to nothing, leaving me to finish my demo painting that day almost purely from memory. I had forgotten my favorite brush, was using the wrong canvas, and my flowers went kaput - a recipe for disaster in the midst of a big event? Well, not quite - the demo found a new home - with the hostess - hooray! I brought my wilted flowers home, thinking they were done for, and the next morning these white hydrangeas were bright and perky and fresh again! Just like new! I think they wanted to be in another painting, don't you?

My St. Louis workshop filled up today, so I felt the need to celebrate my first workshop in my home town with some bold color! I've been playing with purple just about all week, after creating a new banner for my art newsletter. There is just something soothing about fuschias and lavenders, and lately it's been a lot of fun to find new colors to pair with purple. In the meantime, I've got a Big Ole (important Texas term) four foot canvas behind me I'm scrambling to finish in time for my Featured Artist night for The Good Art Company Gallery in Fredericksburg, Texas, next Friday evening. I sure hope to see you there!

Blue Shadows White Hydrangeas was one of seven class demonstrations completed during my three day workshop that ended Sunday in North Texas. We studied white flowers, starting with white irises and ending with white hydrangeas, on the first two days. I love painting white flowers, there are so many colors you can put into white petals, into the shadows and the highlights both. The white irises for our class paintings were cut directly from my iris garden, which was in full bloom this morning. I've posted photos of my iris garden on the art blog today, including one starring my little garden helper, Howard Pee Pugpants himself!

Put a Little Joy in Your Brush and Let's Make Flowers Bloom in a Spring Workshop!

Follow the Light White Hydrangeas was my class demonstration this morning for my workshop in Irving, Texas. We had a full house, plenty of sunshine outside, and two boxes of fresh glazed and chocolate covered donuts to keep us fueled up for a day of flower painting. I loved how each of my students had a completely unique approach to their paintings in our afternoon, step by step paintalong. Some ladies chose lovely, muted violet backgrounds, some really pushed the golden shadows and one cute gal introduced a mauve and pink background in six different shades that was just short of spectacular next to her bright white flower. No surprise that she won the cutest shoes award! Tomorrow we have two entire tables of fresh flowers to choose from. Stay tuned here tomorrow. After the muses make their selection, I'll be sharing our painting escapades with you!

Spring Green Hydrangeas is the newest small work on the easel. We had a light dusting of snow yesterday, and mom came home from the hospital today, two gifts in one week! I'm hopeful she'll be stronger and stronger with time, and back to herself in no time at all.
