Provence Breezes Sunflower Garden was one of my class demonstrations today near Kansas City, Missouri. I'm packing up boxes tonight to head to the next destination in Spring, Texas, and looking forward to a few days home with the hubby and puggies. If you've been waiting for word on your pre-order for the new Ranunculus and Daisy DVD, good news: These are shipping out to everyone early next week! My goal is to flood you with flowers over the winter, so you'll never have a day without bright color even when it's chilly outside and we are forced to snuggle on the couch indoors with the furry friends, a soft knit blanket, and a cup of hot chocolate with extra whippy creme on top...

Summer Dance Red Geraniums by Floral Artist Nancy Medina

Summer Dance Red Geraniums
by Nancy Medina

Oil on Archival Panel

After carefully checking for wayward tree lizards, I brought a pot of these red blossoms in from my garden to paint tonight. The last time I brought a batch of geraniums in to paint, I carried a large pot of them to the Dutch Art Gallery in Dallas for a workshop there, only to discover a teeny baby lizard had hitched a ride. The entire class screeched to a halt as we built the little guy a mobile terrarium, and the hubby drove him back to our garden and placed him beneath our pear tree in the back yard. None of us could really focus on painting until we received a call letting us know baby lizard was safe and sound. I do think he lived on to proliferate, judging from the dozen lizards who now live on our deck puffing out their chins at one another, competing with one another for the spot on the fence that gets the most sun. What a delight it is to have a job now, that allows me to see this little lizard drama, this summer dance, each morning before going into the home studio, instead of an office. Just one more reason I am so thankful to be a full-time artist!

Pansy Parazzi Flower Painting Workshop by Texas Artist Nancy Medina

Pansy Paparazzi and Sunflowers
16X20
Oil on Linen Panel

Pansy Paparazzi and Sunflowers was my class demo this morning, in Day 2 of my 3-day workshop at the Jaycee Parks Center for the Arts. This afternoon in our class paint-along, the ladies created beautiful blue filigree white China sugar bowls. We sacrificed the one remaining white pansy on the pot of blossoms I brought to class from my back yard garden. But it gave itself for a good cause, to be memorialized in oils for all time! (Can you tell I'm still feeling bad about picking that little pansy off the plant?)  Tomorrow I am very excited, I will be painting white hydrangeas, white roses, and holly berries in my NEW RED VASE the Carlos picked up for me today. *sound of trumpets* If this doesn't kick our paintbrushes into holiday gear, nothing will! Except, of course, for a little eggnog.... Stay tuned to my art blog for more class pictures, red vases, holiday themed paintings, and workshop fun.

Heart's Wish Stargazer Lilies by Texas Flower Artist Nancy Medina

Heart's Wish Stargazer Lilies

Heart's Wish is a tribute to the fading lilies in my studio tonight. The past few days I've spent with my mother, who was in great spirits and full of her regular pip and vinegar and wit and laughter. I mentioned to her that it is the 100th birthday of the Poetry Anthology, and how I wished we could find her spiral notebooks filled with her poetry. She told me there were poems all over the house. I said, really, where mom? She said, "They're everywhere!" Then she began reciting poems she had written decades ago, sharing one with my 20 year old niece Robin and I that she had written when Robin was a baby. I still have not been able to find her spiral notebook filled with poems, but I realized my mother was absolutely right. Her home is filled with poetry, and beauty, and memories that are going to last longer than time, because she is there.

White Roses and the Story of My Great-Grandmother's Haunted Bedroom by Texas Artist Nancy Medina

Blue Satin White Roses by Nancy Medina
12X12
Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas

It was definitely time for a change of pace in the studio, so we put the sunflowers in the kitchen, and turned our attention to white roses today in Flower Mound Studio. These roses remind me of a chipped china cup in my great grandmother's kitchen in Palestine, Texas. She lived in a big old two story house all alone, had her own garden out back, and was completely independent, despite having been blind since she was in her 20s. Visit my art blog to read more about my great-grandmother, and the Peacock Bedroom, which she assured my sisters and I was haunted.
