"He Loves Me, He Loves Me Not" ~ Acrylic Figurative by Texas Daily Painter Nancy Standlee

He Love Me, He Loves Me Not
"He Loves Me, He Loves Me Not"

24 x 18 in.
Acrylic figurative painting with collage

Love is in the air in the metroplex. Does your life experiences influence your paintings? Mine do and this summer I've heard a lot of boyfriend, romance, wedding and shower talk and visited some bridal stores, bought some silvery paper and ribbons and searched my closet for appropriate clothes for these occasions. It seems we never stop picking those daisy petals and wondering if "He Loves me, He Loves Me Not."

This painting is included in the 2010 Fine Art in Dallas Engagement Book, a comprehensive book of local artists' work and the book will go to homes, art galleries, realtors and there will be scheduled exhibitions and artist events during the year. The City Art Calendar is available now.

"Jessie" ~ watercolor figure by Texas Daily Painter Nancy Standlee

"Jessie"
15" x 22" Watercolor, acrylic, charcoal on paper

In October I took a 3 day figure workshop with Daily Painter, Liz Hill, in Houston. Each morning we had a different model to draw and then we'd paint in the afternoon after the model went home. The models allowed photos to be taken. I've had three more workshops since then and haven't been able to paint and use anything I learned at the figure workshop. So Saturday and Sunday right before the Western Federation deadline, I finally had an opportunity to paint "Jessie" from one of my photographs. Liz draws from live models about three times a week but at this stage in my figure painting I need a photograph. I really enjoy mixing up the media and combining it with the charcoal. I want to pursue this way of working and schedule another Houston trip for the next Liz Hill workshop. Western Fed is a juried art show and allows 3 entries per person and artists will be notified if they got in after the first of the year.

Watercolor Collage by Texas Daily Painter Nancy Standlee

Patricia with Hat
Watercolor, collage, charcoal on hot press 15 x 22 in

See my previous blog post about the Liz Hill workshop and the 3 days I spent in the Houston class where we were encouraged to add anything that will make your figure pieces more exciting. In the upper left corner this piece has some newspaper collage and peeling back of the layers and the hat is collage paper made in a previous workshop.

This one may still be a little damp as I painted it this week in the Cheng-Khee Chee workshop at Artists Showplace in Dallas. I used a photo reference taken at the Japanese Botanic Garden in Fort Worth and hope to paint a few more using his saturated wet technique.

Shadows on the Wall ~ An Abstract Figurative Painting by Nancy Standlee

"Shadows on the Wall"

18 x 18"
Acrylic on Canvas, 3/4" profile

I worked on this today while painting with Canvas by Canvas at our rented studio space while taking a break and in between working on a large zebra painting for a collaboration. After I look at the above painting with fresh eyes tomorrow, it may not look like this again.
It was nice to get back to painting today as for the past 3 days and evenings, I've been updating my web site. It had been neglected for updates for a year and was getting stale. I've added some new work so you've invited to take a look.

Indigo Floral Duet #1 ~ Acrylic Floral ~ Winsor Newton ~ by Nancy Standlee

"Indigo Floral Duet #1"

Acrylic 12 x 12 in. (3/4 in. depth) Gallery Wrapped Canvas

Contact NancyStandlee@sbcglobal.net

This blue floral has texture with some stamping and drawing into the paint with a Derwent Sketching Wash 8 B drawing pencil and lots of negative painting. I will post #2 later and the paintings may be purchased separately or as a pair.

Winsor Newton Artist Opportunity

Winsor & Newton New Acrylics
W & N has developed a new line of acrylics that does not color shift from wet to dry. They are using a translucent binder when wet and it dries clear. The paints remain workable 20% longer than the Finity brand and they are not in the U.S. yet but watch for them. While you're on that home page be sure and click on the red paint spot near the bottom to enter a painting in their competition. You might win some art supplies. No jury here just other artists voting for their favorite painting. This phase closes Sept. 30 and then you can enter again. I entered "Her Wings Were Never Seen" and you can read more about it on my recent post on the Nancy Standlee Art Blog.

After you enter you will receive some code to place on your blog or web site such as this below. Vote for me or enter your own work or do both. Let me know if you enter and I'll vote for you.

Cowboys and Fort Worth Texas ~ Main Showroom ~ Nancy Standlee

"Main Showroom"

18"x24 gallery wrapped canvas, 1 1/2" depth
Acrylic mixed media on Canvas

Cowboys - Fort Worth – Cowtown - Stockyards - Longhorns ..

All of these words evoke memories of early Cowtown and the old stockyards district is today
a center of daily entertainment and Western-style nightlife.
The Stockyards were developed in the 1880’s and grew to be the largest in the world. Now Exchange Avenue is lined with restored nineteenth-century buildings. Cowboys can be found driving a herd of longhorns through the historic streets each day and we can get a glimpse into our past and heritage. Close by is Billy Bob’s Texas with real bull riding in an indoor arena. It was built in 1910 as an open air cattle barn and now can hold 6000 people for a concert. This north side area of Fort Worth tells a little of the Cowtown story and still has the Wild West atmosphere.
I toured the area taking many photographs and made black and white copies in different sizes to collage. The edges of these copies can be seen and felt on the painting. I drew in the central figure for placement and painted the cowboy figure in acrylics. Some of the words, Ladies, Bull Riding, Main Show Room were actual signs inside of Billy Bob's that were photographed. I painted on top of the copies after covering them with an acrylic medium and used some crossword puzzles for colors and design. Collage is one of my favorite ways of working because if it doesn't work attach something else over it. Gerald Brommer, collage artist, says you can keep doing that until you can't pick it up.

Rooster #3 by Nancy Standlee

Watercolor Rooster #3
9"x11" on 140 lb. paper
Art for Sale

I belong to a collaborative group of artists, Canvas by Canvas, and we like to travel and paint together. This rooster was painted while we stayed at the Iron Horse Inn in Granbury. Read about this adventure on my blog here. I took only rooster reference material that weekend and the photos were from a farm near the lake house where we'd stayed near Gun Barrel City.
