Daily Painters of Texas: flower painting workshop

Peony Panoply was my class demonstration for a workshop in North Texas today. The fresh peonies from the supermarket held up long enough for one more day under the spotlight, and my students and I painted pink peonies step by step together in the afternoon. I love to see how each student's individual style unfolds throughout the afternoon as they paint from fresh flower setups. I always encourage them not to lose their own voice, but to incorporate only those items from the workshop that will work best with their own individual approach to painting. One thing everyone seemed to have in common was love for bright color and a desire to paint with large, loose brushstrokes. The message I shared most today: Paint with a bigger brush. I love walking into Flower Mound Studio a day after a workshop ends, the house is filled with the smell of fresh flowers! This past weekend, gals from Louisiana, Texas and Oklahoma converged to create brightly color florals, taking home two or three new paintings each. I painted a large demonstration each morning, and in the afternoons, we completed step by step paint-along flowers together.

I'm absolutely delighted to announce a new 2-day workshop with the Trinity Arts Guild in Bedford, Texas, coming up in June - open to TAG members and non-members alike! What a perfect time of year to make flowers bloom in brilliant colors. Put a little joy in your brush and join me June 8-9 from 9 am to 4 pm. Open to beginners to advanced students, as well as those who work in water based oils and acrylics, I'll share all my favorite tips for painting in a loose, fresh style, making simple strokes of color on a transparent underpainting.

A Bit of Heaven was the afternoon step by step paintalong in my workshop this afternoon. I'm always just a bit sad when a workshop ends, knowing the next morning I won't be teaching, I'll just be painting. We had a fun group of ladies in class from Texas, Louisiana and Oklahoma making yellow roses and white hydrangeas bloom in oils! I'll be posting more photos from my workshop this week, including my large demo painting below, so stay tuned to the art blog.

Summer Season Sunflowers and Day Lilies was the morning class demo today for my workshop in Fredericksburg, Texas, in the heart of the Texas Hill Country. We woke up this morning to sunshine and country breezes, a perfect day to spend with friends painting, a perfect day to enjoy fresh German pastries, and a fabulous day to go out for dinner after class for excellent and seafood and chocolate torte desserts all around (yes, I noticed there were two references to desserts, and one reference to painting....) ! I get such joy from seeing my students excited about their paintings. These ladies converged from all over the country to gather for some loose, bright application of color emphasizing an energetic, free approach to making brilliant flowers bloom in oils. What an amazing life it is, to wake up each morning now knowing I am now officially doing the thing I love most of all - teaching art. I sincerely hope each of you has found a way to follow your bliss. I'm so glad you are here with me, on this journey. Have another cheese kolache and let's get to painting!

White Gold Iris Garden was my class demo this afternoon for our student paint-along session. The three day workshop is 2/3 over, and it is hard to believe how fast the time flies! This morning I cute fresh irises from my garden and was amazed they stayed fresh and perky all day, under the studio spotlight for my students. Tomorrow we will be painting a perky daisy spring bouquet, so stay tuned for colors some bright color!

What My Students Have to Say...

Little Bird Blue Hydrangeas is the newest small work, and I'm all set for my 3-day flower painting workshop that starts bright and early tomorrow morning! A visit to Central Market *sound of harps* today to pick over the best of their amazing fresh flower collection had my heart going pitty pat. I may have mentioned before, I can't take pictures of this flower market, because photos are not allowed, I was told by the flower security guard. I had my phone out at the time, and was clicking away like crazy, when she pointed up to the giant sign above my head that said NO PHOTOS in bold type. Once again, here I was, about to get kicked out of a flower market type situation. So alas, as much as I wanted to show you, I was not allowed because I chose to be a law abiding flower buying citizen. However, tune in to my art bloggy tomorrow and you'll see what I bought, as we paint flowers til the cows come home in North Texas.

Sunflower Simpatico was one of six demonstration paintings this weekend for my 3-day workshop in North Texas. I will have such fond memories of this fun group of ladies, we did do quite a bit of giggling and donut sampling and had a selection of coffees to keep us on our toes. We also managed to cover quite the spectrum of flowers, the sunflowers standing out in particular, since I managed to put a nice fat streak of cadmium yellow in my hair in the middle of class. Using a Clorox wipe to remove the yellow paint was maybe not the best decision, in hindsight.
