Thunder in Tuscany and 1000 Years of Prayer - Flower Painting Classes and Workshops

Thunder Red Geraniums

Class Demonstration, Tuscany, Italy

Thunder rolled across the Tuscan hills last night, blasting light in bolts that shook the ground and threw out the power for a short time during our dinner hour at San Fedele in the Chianti region of Italy. We grabbed our wine glasses, cameras, and other valuables from tables on terraces overlooking vineyards and ran into the chapel to escape a drenching rain. As black clouds moved quickly across hills that had seen the boots of the Gestapo, the soft tread of monks, and the footprints of local farmers, it seemed only fitting to find sanctuary in a place where prayer had been given for 1000 years.

Spring Sparkle Geraniums and Caught in a Flower Painting Love Triangle - Nancy Medina Art

Spring Sparkle Pink Geraniums was one of my recent class demonstrations and the flower models are already blooming happily on my sun porch, as part of my "paint the flower, plant the flower" recycling program. I'm leaving for Tennessee Friday for a full workshop near Nashville, but I have a confession to make. I am so excited about Tennessee and seeing all those friendly southern ladies, but Sonoma, California, is on my mind! Paint Brilliant Sonoma is coming up soon. Is it okay to be in love with two venues at the same time? Will Nashville begin saying awful things about Sonoma on its Facebook page if they discover I am practically seeing them both at the same time?

Regardless, the evening wine tasting and hazy mornings over flower filled fields with clusters of grapes catching the dawn dew are calling my name. I would move back to California in a heartbeat, if I could afford the car registration fees. At least I can visit occasionally, and take you with me! Here's the squeeze on Sonoma:

Have you ever had one of those days in the studio where nothing you paint turns out right? I scumbled and wiped and mumbled through three canvases today before I finally settled on this geranium painting. I'm not sure why sometimes things flow, and sometimes it's like gears grinding. When the muses are singing, when things flow almost effortlessly onto the canvas, it's so nice, but it doesn't always happen, even when you've been painting every day for almost 7 years! Clearly, I need more chocolate in my diet or something....

Red Geraniums in Flight was one of my class demonstrations in Houston a few weeks ago. I'm headed that way again Saturday, November 1, for my Spotlight on the Artist night at Davis and Company Fine Art Gallery in Old Town, Spring. I'll be painting live and in person. You'll recognize me as the lady with a bit of green paint on my nose. I sure hope you'll stop and say hello if you're in the neighborhood!

Spring Geranium Garden and a Houston Workshop - Flower Paintings by Nancy Medina

Spring Geranium Garden was one of my class demonstrations this weekend in my Spring, Texas workshop, in The Woodlands area just north of Houston. We painted yellow tulips, red geraniums and tomorrow, white hydrangeas and purple larkspur, all from fresh flowers. Painting from life is such a great way to pay tribute to Mother Nature, and creating a painting from a fresh flower has an impact that is quite a bit stronger than recreating work from a one dimensional photograph. How to make the transition from photos to life is one of the things I share with my students.Visit my art blog to see photos from class this weekend, and hear about a holiday gift that's coming your way soon!

My new video

Garden Covenant Red Geraniums is the daily newbie in Flower Mound Studio, as I begin work on a similar painting for a very special client for her beautiful cottage home. I received a note today from one of my students, Paul Duda, who has just had a major work installed in downtown Cleveland, you can see his painting on my blog today. If any one thing could tell me I've made the right choice to become a full time artist and teacher, this is it. Congratulations Paul, for taking color to a whole new level, Bravo!

Nancy, this is the first painting I sold using your methods.
Thank you for the knowledge! It benefited me greatly.

I have this old patio set, and I just love the rusty white
designs.  I did a large watercolor of this a couple of years
ago and it got in SWS watercolor show.  I am not a flower painter
and this was a double struggle! But hopefully I am learning more and more.

Barefoot Garden Geraniums is a detail from the larger work finished yesterday evening. It's been a regular flower painting factor since Friday, since the pugs and I are iced in and house-bound. Thanks to a large supply of flavored coffees and creamers, Christmas cookies, and paints up to my elbows, the production line has been going non-stop! Read more...

Cottage Path Geraniums and a San Diego Workshop by Nancy Medina

Cottage Path Geraniums

Today was the first day of my first California flower painting workshop, and we started off with a bang! The hubby brought everyone gourmet donuts from the Donut Bar, giving us just enough sugar charge to tackle delphiniums and white zinnias. With 17 students from Canada, New Mexico, Washington, California, and Texas, we had tons of awesome space in our San Diego studio located in the heart of historic Balboa Park. I'm easily distracted by donuts, and totally forgot to get a photo of my demo today, so I'll be sharing that with you tomorrow.

SOLD ~ Summer Night Red Geranium Painting and a North Texas Workshop by Floral Artist Nancy Medina

Summer Nights Red Geraniums
by Nancy Medina

SOLD
8X10
Oil on Archival Panel

Tomorrow morning my three-day workshop in Irving, Texas begins, which enabled me to exercise little or no self-control in the Central Market *sound of harps* Flower Market today! For class this week, I found luscious, fat pink roses, white hydrangeas, purple and white stock, three kinds of sunflowers, red and white gerbera daisies, and at this point I simply lose track of everything else I grabbed and threw in the cart in a state of flower buying fervor. This new little geranium, however, came straight from my garden on a hot summer day!
