While in Canada last summer we stopped at Athabasca Falls.  The water is a lovely turquoise.  Wikipedia explains why the water is this color:

A Rock flour, or glacial flour, consists of fine-grained, silt-sized particles of rock, generated by mechanical grinding of bedrock by glacial erosion or by artificial grinding to a similar size. Because the material is very small, it becomes suspended in meltwater making the water appear cloudy, which is sometimes known as glacial milk.

When the sediments enter a river, they turn the river's colour grey, light brown, iridescent blue-green, or milky white. If the river flows into a glacial lake, the lake may appear turquoise in colour as a result. When flows of the flour are extensive, a distinct layer of a different colour flows into the lake and begins to dissipate and settle as the flow extends from the increase in water flow from the glacier during snow melts and heavy rain periods. Examples of this phenomenon may be seen at Lake Tekapo, New Zealand, Lake Louise, Moraine Lake and Peyto Lake in Canada, and Gjende lake in Norway.

Because of the many values this was a difficult painting, but one in which I learned - again - the importance of comparing values throughout the painting.  I squinted and scraped and repainted to achieve the results I wanted.  I'm pleased with the outcome.

Sometimes you just have to put on creative music and let go.  The colors in this painting are just me doing that.  Exploring new thick paint colors and designs.  The little oak leaf bloom holds the attention back to the antique roses.  One of my students Dawn is always exploring new techniques of thick paint so why not try something a little more fun.

When at the garden center earlier this week they were starting to put out all the little starter plants.  Well before I left the buggy was full of small assorted plants.  When arriving back at the studio just couldn't decide which model I liked the best so they all got the privilege of being a model for my newest painting.  My favorite flowers was the small pansies just twisting and turning each way amoung all the other flowers.  Then the miniature buttercups reached for the top of the bunch.  Each flower was looking for their own personal attention.
