Last Day, Provence Art Trek with Niki Gulley and Scott Williams

SOLD • 9" x 12" textured oil painting by Niki Gulley

Day 7, Provence Art Trek:
Plein Air Painting and Photography Workshop
with Niki Gulley and Scott Williams

On the last day of our Provence Art Trek, everyone had a free day to choose how they wanted to spend their time. Some decided to stay right at our b and b, either just relaxing at the pool or taking advantage of the massage therapist on site. Meanwhile the photographers explored the nearby area and a few others wanted to visit the l'Occitane facility nearby. I drove that group for a tour of their perfume facilities, and set up my easel to paint this beautiful courtyard scene of the lavender while they shopped.

That evening we gathered for one final delicious dinner together. Having formed new friendships and enjoyed wonderful memories from the trip, our Provence Art Trek had come to a bittersweet end.

E-mail Niki Gulley for more information on her Provence and lavender field paintings.

Day 6, Provence Art Trek with Niki Gulley and Scott Williams

Abbey de Senanque ©2023 Niki Gulley
SOLD • 12" x 9" textured acrylic painting

Day 6, Provence Art Trek: the Luberon
Plein Air Painting and Photography Workshop
with Niki Gulley and Scott Williams

After a peaceful day in the countryside, we headed to the Luberon hill towns today. Starting our journey at the Abbey de Senanque, some of our group toured the twelfth century sanctuary's interior, while others painted and photographed the lavender fields and grounds surrounding the abbey. Next we traveled to the red and gold colored town of Roussillon, known for its ochre cliffs. Filled with picturesque views, art galleries, restaurants and interesting shops, everyone enjoyed having some free time to wander before we took off for the Pont Julien bridge.

The Roman bridge, dating from 3 BC and constructed without mortar, is an architectural marvel that was still driven on until 2005! After surveying the bridge, we headed back to our b and b. Dinner that night was traditional Provencal fare, including fresh vegetables, fish, meats, and goat cheeses loaded with delicious sauces, garlic and butter. Yum!

Visiting Aix-en-Provence with Niki Gulley and Scott Williams

Day 4, Provence Art Trek: Aix-en-Provence and Lavender Fields
Plein Air Painting and Photography Workshop
with Niki Gulley and Scott Williams

Today we checked out of our hotel and headed to Provence's cultural hub and Cezanne's home, Aix-en-Provence. We visited its famous Cours Mirabeau boulevard, lined with cafés and plane trees, then onto the city's bountiful produce and flower market, and finished at the impressive cathedral. Then, some of our group went onto tour Cezanne's studio, while others shopped and dined.

By unanimous vote, we decided to leave Aix earlier than planned and take a detour to visit lavender fields on the way to our hotel. Everyone was dying to see those vibrant stretches of perfectly manicured purple rows, and the Provence countryside did not disappoint! After our Trekkers had reached their saturation point of aromatic beauty, we headed to our picturesque b and b, where we spent the rest of the trip. And, of course we completed the day with another delicious meal.

"Waltz of the Sunflowers" New Palette Knife Painting by Niki Gulley

"Waltz of the Sunflowers" ©2023 Niki Gulley
24" x 12" textured mixed media painting on canvas

This winter has been so grey and cold that I had to buy a bouquet of sunflowers to cheer myself up. Not only did they do the trick, but I was also inspired to paint their infectious beauty. To lift your spirits, too, I arranged the blooms vertically in my composition and repeated the circular shapes in the foreground and background to create a sense of joyful energy and movement. I hope you can hear a beautiful symphony playing while sunflowers dance to the melodic tune.

These vibrant sunflowers can also be hung horizontally.

"Field of Dreams" Large Triptych Sunflower Painting by Niki Gulley

"Field of Dreams" ©2023 Niki Gulley
Three 48" x 36" canvases to form a 48" x 90" triptych
textured oil painting on wrap around canvas

Field of Dreams is inspired from the beautiful sunflower fields we visited in Provence, France. The flowers seemed to stretch forever and the color explosion was out of this world! Back in my studio, I worked from a combination of photos, on-site sketches and memories. Painting the sunflowers full-sized in the foreground helps to bring them to life and hopefully transport you to this happy location. Including surprising pops of vivid reds and purples keeps your eye moving throughout the scene, seeing new things each time you look at it, and adds to the joyful feeling.

To purchase this original painting, go to https://www.nikigulley.com/field-of-dreams/.

Or, if you would prefer a print on canvas, please e-mail Niki Gulley for details.

"Sunshine on My Mind" New Sunflower Painting by Niki Gulley

"Sunshine on My Mind" ©2022 Niki Gulley
SOLD • 24" x 12" textured mixed media painting on canvas

Just Sold! I saw these cheerful sunflowers planted in my neighborhood every time I got in my car to ran errands  and they were so bright and colorful, I just had to paint them! So this week, I dragged my body out of bed at 5 a.m. to capture them at sunrise before our Texas heat reached 100 degrees. While not normally an early riser, it was well worth it to bask in their glory while I was painting. I hope you, too, can enjoy their sunshine and start your day with a smile.

"Sunny Horizon" Palette Knife Sunflower Painting by Niki Gulley

“Sunny Horizon" ©2020 Niki Gulley
30" x 48" textured oil painting on wrap around canvas

Inspired by a trip through the Midwest, I was filled with joy seeing this solid field of gold! At the same time, the clouds above were so voluminous and dramatic that I had to recreate the scene. The horizon stretches out before us as festive blossoms dance in the early evening glow. Leaving my strokes loose and free and working with palette knife to create volume and texture, all add to the energy of the painting. I hope you, too, can feel the peace and happiness of being surrounded by nature in all of its glory, staring into the clouds while soaking in the moment.

New "Simple Life IV" Palette Knife Painting by Niki Gulley

"Simple Life IV" ©2019 Niki Gulley
textured oil paint on canvas • 16" x 20"

My husband and I were on a road trip when we came across a couple of these white house glowing on the horizon. Set among vibrant green gently rolling hills with the intense blue ocean in the distance, something beckoned us to stop. Maybe it was the quiet beauty of the scene, or the nostalgic tug at a simpler life, but we were both moved to capture the moment. To convey that feeling of a less congested life, I accentuated the the basic shapes of the homes against the simple repetive curves of the hills. Meanwhile a few wispy clouds drift by adding to the tranquility of the moment. I hope you are transported to this memory of our past, before modern life got so complicated.
