If you have never purchased this type of cabbage rose you probably don't know how expensive they are per bloom.  This color is one of their move valued cabbage roses so that being the case you need to get your monies worth out of the model.  As we say at our house no one eats for free.  The first painting the 11 x 14 took about 8 hours to paint and the second painting the 5x 7 took about 4 hours to paint.  If you figure it up that is about the same amount of time per square inch of canvas.  Never really thought about it before.

What a fun day to get up early and head to the old river bed and set up the easel in the morning haze and start to paint.  The goal in painting outdoors is to stay true to what you first saw.  The light is always changing.  You goal as an artist is not to chase the light.

Could not resist my neighbors beautiful fall tree in her yard.  It was a blaze in the orange fall colors.  The grasses have faded and the trees are colorful this year.  The sky was so blue yesterday against the colors of the tree.  Thank you Angie! I sat in my garage and paint your tree across the street.

Fall Pansies by artist Pat Meyer

Fall Pansies are always so fun to paint.  These bright yellow faces are painted with transparent orange and viridian in the shadow areas and then cad yellow deep to cad lemon to the brightest part of the flower.  The background was laid in after painting the pansies with a wash of transparent brown plus French ultra blue and then in areas picked up Alizarin to vary the back ground keeping areas transparent.  The main thing I wanted to achieve in this painting is to give you the feel of layers in the plant making the main flower to come forward.

My summer goal is to paint out 3 days a week.  Well hiking into the river bridge to capture the view of the river.  My goal for this painting was to work on clouds and adding layers to the painting with some atmosphere.  Happy with todays 2 hour painting.

Entries!!! Last night I was trying to decide which of the paintings that I had painted for a competition would be the best entry. When an artist enters a competition they are putting themselves out there with a hope that they get in. It is always hard to know what the judges will be looking for and then you ask yourself am I good enough? Will they like my art? Etc. Etc. It comes down to Just Do It! This piece was just entered into the National Bold Brush Competition for the month of April.  Hope the judges like it.  The bright yellow bloom against the abstract purple and orange background.  Pulling in the undertones of orange color in the flower I thought the balance of the oranges would provide harmony.

While driving down the road looking for the perfect spot to paint these lovely roses and flowers caught my eye.  That danced like sugar plums dancing in my head.  The layers of colors where so delightful that I tried capturing them in a short time frame.  The old tree was the rugged balance needed for the painting.

My dear friend Renee surprised me with a wonderful arrangement of flowers.  These beautiful carnations where in the bouquet.  The balance of the strong Red color against the White add high contrast and the Pink balances it out.  Beautiful botanical for any room.

My peonies in the garden are starting to peek up through the soil.  My sweet Mom gave me the roots from her garden in Nashville to plant in my yard.  How exciting to see the earth renew itself each year.  We feel that there is always hope when seeing that things are not forever in our lives but will be in constant change and new exciting things will be blooming.

Just entered my painting to a competition.  Every time I do this it makes me think will the judges like my painting, is it good enough to get in, did it photograph correctly and so many other factors.  The other night the academy awards were on TV and watching all the people the same fear was in their eyes.  Everyone tries to put on a happy face but you know they are all so nervous to win.  The same thing happens when you put yourself out there for competition.  You hope just to be chosen and put on the wall with all the other great artist.
