Purple Pirouette Larkspur was one of my afternoon paint-along lessons for my Rockwall, Texas workshop last week. Every time I see "stock" flowers in the grocer, I grab up bundles and run to the checkout cheering. The color is so intense, so rewarding, and these flowers are so simple in their beauty. It's like finding the perfect designer dress on the 1/2 off rack at Nordstrom's the day before your 20th class reunion. Okay make that your 30th class reunion, and shoes to match! I confess purples push all my buttons, but most of all this lesson for my students was about color temperature. Warm purples and cool purples, next to one another, give a burst of color that is simply gratifying. Color in all its glory, and that's why I pick up the paint brush every day, it's all about the joy of color!
My Dallas Arboretum class on November 9 is almost full, just 2 seats left, so I hope you can join me there. The fall pumpkin display, the colorful mums, and the beautiful flower gardens are worth the trip!

I went a little larger than usual with my class demonstration this morning, Breath of Summer Hydrangeas was begun at 9:30 am and finished at 11:45 am, and measures 18X24 inches. With a room filled with enthusiastic students and gorgeous flowers, the energy and happiness was contagious! I am so happy to be teaching in Rockwall, Texas, just north of Kaufman County where I grew up. The weather was sunny and fall crisp, just beautiful today, so we propped all the classroom doors open and listened to kids and pups playing in the park, and saw a very nosy squirrel who kept peering in the door at all those strange humans with paintbrushes in their paws.... Tomorrow we have LOTS of flower choices, pink, white or yellow roses, red poppies, red carnations, what shall we paint? Stay tuned to my art bloggy to find out!

Celestial Garden Blue Hydrangeas and Roses is the newest work on the easel in Flower Mound Studio, a tribute to a table full of brightly colored fresh flowers on my handy dandy Rubbermaid roller-cart. Almost everything in my studio is on wheels, so I can move things around and fit the large canvases into small space more easily. I say more easily, because there are still times when I feel I am bumping up against every wall and every piece of furniture, in an attempt to get at a corner of a canvas or get a photo from a little distance away. It's also important and a key to a successful day in the studio to ensure there are at least three large comfy beds nearby upon which the assistant may lounge. They prefer to have variety and many choices, I've noticed, one day wanting the cool hardwood floor on the belly, another wanting to be tucked up under a fuzzy blankey on the bed under the desk. Can you tell this working from home is honing my skills of observation?

Daisy Chain Daisies and Larkspur was my class demonstration this morning for my Valentine's Weekend Workshop in Irving, Texas. We had such a fun painting session today and this talented group of ladies produced some of the prettiest blue hydrangeas I have ever seen! I was also very proud that even though we were a small group, they assisted me in putting an admirable dent in the box of double glazed chocolate covered donuts without complaint or hesitation whatsoever.

There was not a single sunflower to be found at Central Market *sound of harps* when I went flower shopping for this workshop a few days ago. Granted it was Valentine's week. Granted the well trained husbands were all lined up with their smart phones and business casual attire, queuing politely and awaiting each of their hand picked bouquets for their honeys. As I silently saluted these wonderful guys for not stopping at the gas station for their sweetheart's gifts, I also wondered which was the culprit who scarfed up all the sunflowers! No worries, once I spotted those bright yellow daisies, all was well in the flower world again, and the balance and order of all things colorful was restored.

Summer Sun Sunflowers is the newest painting on the easel in Flower Mound Studio, and incorporates some of my favorite watercolor techniques into an impressionistic oil still life. I used wet washes of color in the highlight areas, gently blending where they touched the elements along their edges, but not losing those bright spots. This sunflower painting is designed to add some cheer to a sunny breakfast nook or kitchen. The hydrangeas are still fresh and perky here, so I added a few of those blossoms, too, because one can never have too many hydrangeas in any painting, don't you agree?

Today was chilly, sunny, and absolutely perfect for painting in the Texas Hill Country. Yesterday we painted blue hydrangeas and white roses. Today we painted larkspur in fuschia and purple and white hydrangeas and white daisies. If it stays nice and chilly tonight, we have a whole batch of lovely orange tulips for tomorrow! Blue China Hydrangeas and Larkspur was my class demo this morning, and the studio setup is shown for you on my art blog today. Take a peek at some of my students' work - they were absolutely fearless with those blue hydrangeas!

Let It Shine Sunflowers and Larkspur was the final large demo for my three day workshop at the Jaycee Parks Center for the Arts last weekend in North Texas. Just as we were shutting up for the day, a big storm blew in and we had a break from the heat! After last summer's record heat and dry spell, this has been a very welcome, very wet summer. White Wave Hydrangeas and Larkspur was my demonstration painting today for day 1 of my workshop at the Jaycee Parks Center for the Arts, shown step by step on my art blog. This three day workshop kicked off with a nice Dallas style heat wave, but that didn't dampen the spirits of my lively bunch of students! I had ladies and gents from all sorts of interesting places, including Illinois, Florida, California, Louisiana and (of course) Texas. Check out the lovely hydrangeas my students created on my art blog today - they started with white flowers, what a brave AND talented bunch!

My Sunflower Painting Video

Sun Seeker Sunflowers and Larkspur is the newest painting in Flower Mound Studio, and I admit I'm seeing double after working all day in an office, and then painting a new floral still life until midnight. My little solo orange in the foreground needed a companion, so I gave him a reflection to admire, and sprinkled some larkspur on the table for good measure. If you've ever painted larkspur, you'll know it's about the messiest flower you can bring into the studio, and my white tablecloth is now speckled with purple splotchy stains as a result. I still love it, and will keep right on bringing it home, because it's so cheerful!

Wild Things, Larkspur Canyon Path, is another exercise in avoiding roses. I've been very successful at avoiding roses this week, even though I have my palette all ready for them, my Coronado rose photos selected, and my canvas all prepped with warm yellows to accommodate them. What began as a rose ended up as a path through a canyon of larkspur this evening. I often do get off the path, but the good news is, the journey often ends somewhere pleasant.
