Oh Happy Day! by Kay Wyne

Oh Happy Day!
18" x 36" Oil on Heavy Duty Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Palette Knife Painting
Beautiful lavenders, greys and greens all work well together on this canvas.  The flowers are textured, as I used a palette knife to apply the thick oils.  This painting is available for purchase.  Contact Kay for more info.  Thanks for looking at this blog!  KMW

Vortex I by Kay Wyne

Vortex I
40" x 30" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Palette Knife Painting
Vortex I is a contemporary abstract painting with layers of color and texture on the gallery wrap canvas.  Pops of turquoise and tangerine are hidden under the layers of greys, lavenders, and olive greens.  The shapes swirl into movement - thus, the title of Vortex I.  Contact Kay Wyne for more information on this piece.  Thanks for looking....KMW

Hideaway by Kay Wyne

Hideaway
36" x 36" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Palette Knife Painting
Here's a few photos of the progress on this canvas.  This was a fun painting for me, as I had not painted a bird's nest in years.  I am letting it sit at the studio and giving my eye a chance to figure out if it needs anything else.  I started with my transparent and a large squeegee, spreading the paint and getting the darks in.  I used a palette knife and a wide bright brush when it came to the feathers, leaves and twigs and everything that makes up the nest.

Thanks for looking at my art.  Feel free to contact me about this painting or any of my other art.  This painting is available for purchase.  Contact Kay Wyne for more info.  Thanks, Kay

Lush by Kay Wyne

Lush
12" x 24" Oil on Heavy Duty Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Palette Knife Painting
I painted this abstract landscape yesterday in the studio, starting with a canvas that was half completed.  It was five cowgirls sitting on the back-end of a pick up truck.  I had lost my interest in the painting, so I grabbed a palette knife and started covering the canvas.  Some of the color on the original painting peeks through the layers of paint...making it interesting and giving it depth.
Close-up of the knife work.  Lots of loose knife action, giving the canvas texture.    I painted the sides of the canvas Vulcan Grey, so framing is optional.  Contact Kay Wyne for more information on this painting or any of my other canvases.  Thanks, KMW

Farewell by Kay Wyne

Farewell
30" x 40" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Floral Still Life
This palette knife painting is drying in the studio.  The paint was applied in layers with a knife, making the paint very thick and textural.  These flowers have subtle color changes, as I mixed and mixed piles of paint before I began this painting.  There is an underpainting...and some turquoise, red, and peach are peaking through to give it some unexpected pops of color.  Thanks for looking at this blog...Contact Kay Wyne for more information on this painting.  Thanks, KMW

Colors of Seabrook by Kay Wyne

Colors of Seabrook
6" x 6" Oil on RayMar Cotton Panel
Contemporary Landscape/Palette Knife Painting
I am working on some seascape/beach/boating paintings in the studio, and with the cold winter weather, I am wishing I was at Seabrook Island---sitting on the beach.  This small plein air painting was all about getting the colors of the beach day.  Part of painting is getting the feeling or the mood of the day on the canvas.  It was a clear, warm day at the beach, and I can remember it well, especially on this cold January day.  I have several beach scenes that are available for purchase.  Contact ME for more info.  Thanks, KMW

Farewell by Kay Wyne

Farewell
30" x 40" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Palette Knife Painting
Piles of oil paint were on my palette, and with one palette knife I covered the canvas with a baker's dozen of roses.  It felt great to be back into the studio after a three week break.  I mixed my colors so that every layer of paint would be in harmony with the next layer.  There are small specs of rose, red, and turquoise spicing up the painting, but for the most part greys, lavenders and greens, and naples yellow dominate.  Contact Kay Wyne for purchasing info.  Thanks, Kay

Persuasion by Kay Wyne

Persuasion II
24" x 48" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Palette Knife Painting
Here are the two canvases together:
Persuasion I & Persuasion II
Diptych 48" x 48" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Using a palette knife to apply the layers of oil paints, this abstract was created with color and movement in mind.  The shapes of color overlap each other, and the oils blended into each other.  Greys, violets, magenta, pinks, corals, greens, and tangerine are the colors in this contemporary abstract.  The colors float across the canvas.  The paintings can be hung separately, or as a diptych.  Contact Kay Wyne for purchasing information.  Thanks, KMW

Twister by Kay Wyne

Twister
40" x 30" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Abstract
I was thinking of all the severe weather we are having in Texas when I named this contemporary abstract.  The current weather situation of flooding and high winds have left a path of destruction.  On my canvas, the eye of the storm on the canvas is swirling, as if I am looking at a tornado from an aerial view.  The muddy greys and violets are mixed in with the olive greens...it's not my usual color palette.  You can see the wide swipes or strokes that I took with the palette knife, leaving some texture on the canvas.  This painting is drying in the studio...Contact ME for more information on this painting.  Thanks for looking at this blog....Kay

Timeless by Kay Wyne

Timeless
60" x 36" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Palette Knife Painting
Currently hanging at Dutch Art Gallery in Dallas, Texas.  This is a great size canvas if you have vaulted ceilings and lots of wall space.  The florals in this landscape fade into the the horizon.  I loved painting with this color palette, and mixed all the colors.  Nothings was straight out of a tube.  I am back in the studio today, working on a new project.  My time is being divided with an off-sight collaborative painting project and my two new little grandsons, Charlie and Oliver.  They are so much fun...here's a quick pic of them.
Thanks for looking at my blog....Have an artful day!  Kay

Far Away by Kay Wyne

Far Away
20" x 20" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Abstract - Palette Knife Painting
I had an underpainting on this canvas that wasn't working for me, so I changed it up and got my palette knife out and started pushing and pulling the paint.  Then I used a rubber wipe-out tool to draw some lines and move paint around.  Then signed it!  Far Away is for sale, and you can contact Kay Wyne for purchasing info.  Thanks for looking at my blog....I will be in the studio today working on Day #6 for the paint challenge!  KMW

Abstract II by Kay Wyne

Abstract II (Untitled)
Contemporary Palette Knife Painting
40" x 30" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
This is the companion piece that hangs next to yesterday's painting that I posted.  Below is a picture of the two canvases on my easel.  Hanging as a diptych would make the painting approximately 40" x 60"...and would look great in a home or office setting.  The sides need to have a second coat of light grey paint, and I may put a few touches on it.
Today is Day #4 in the 30/30 Day Paint Challenge.  I have several abstracts and florals on my easel...I can't wait to get back into the studio after the holidays and the crazy schedules.  Thanks for looking at my art on this  blog....contact Kay Wyne for purchasing info.  KMW

Dreaming by Kay Wyne

Dreaming
36" x 36" Oil on Heavy Duty Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Floral Painting
Layers of paint, drips of paint, palette knife work, brush work, and a large palette full of color made this painting fun and exciting for me.  I wish I had photographed all the steps and the process that I took to get to this point.  "Dreaming" was inspired by a beautiful floral bouquet.  This painting is drying at the studio after weeks of painting on it.  Contact ME for purchasing info.  I was able to start the year off with a great day of painting in the studio...Thanks for looking at my blog.  Kay

Color of Summer by Kay Wyne

Color of Summer
10" x 20" Oil on RayMar Cotton Panel
Contemporary Landscape Painting
This palette knife painting is very impressionistic and moody.  I pushed and scraped the oils around with the knife.  I look at this painting and see different images appear each time.  You can visualize and imagine what is in the distance at the horizon.  This painting is framed in a silver floater frame, and is very handsome.  Contact Kay Wyne for more information on this painting.  Thanks, Kay

Joyful Day by Kay Wyne

Joyful Day
Contemporary Floral Landscape
60" x 36" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
I love to paint on a large surface.  It is liberating to make big wide brushstrokes with a brush or apply loads of paint with a palette knife.  A 60" x 36" canvas is fun, challenging and my image/subject matter is always changing....as you can see below I did stop and take some pics along my painting journey.

First, I had an idea in my head and thought that I would sketch it out with charcoal on the canvas.  Then I scrubbed in some colors.  And more colors.  Finally getting the white canvas covered up.

I wanted my color palette to be in cool lavenders and greys....and some greens.  I got off-track as you can see in the fifth photo.  I cut loose with some oranges, reds, and blues.  The next day when I came into the studio, I realized that I had gotten de-railed.  So I spent more than two hours mixing wonderful purples. magentas, greens, and greys to bring the colors back to my original plan.  Of course I used huge amounts of oils and there is texture and depth to this painting.

This painting is drying at the studio, and tomorrow is day #1 in Leslie Saeta's 30 Paintings in 30 Days Challenge.  Check out Leslie's blog...It's always fun to see what everyone is posting on a daily basis.  Thanks for looking at my blog....Have an artful day.  Kay Wyne
