Using a palette knife to apply the layers of oil paints, this abstract was created with color and movement in mind.  The shapes of color overlap each other, and the oils blended into each other.  Greys, violets, magenta, pinks, corals, greens, and tangerine are the colors in this contemporary abstract.  The colors float across the canvas.  The paintings can be hung separately, or as a diptych.  Contact Kay Wyne for purchasing information.  Thanks, KMW

Contemporary Abstract Painting

It is finished!  I wish I had photos of the progression of this painting.  It has gone through lots of phases.  I worked with oil bars, tubes of oils, after starting with a base coat of turquoise in acrylic.  I used a wide brush throughout most of the painting, along with a palette knife and impasto to give the paint body and texture.

Here's a close-up.  

You can see the layers of color and the texture on the canvas.

I purposely signed the canvas on the sides --- 

as I could not decide if this painting

looked better horizontal or vertical.  So when this painting goes to a new home,

the owner can decide which way to hang.

Contemporary Floral Landscape

I was back in the studio yesterday, and got my palette knife out and created this painting.  The paint is layered on the panel, giving it texture and depth.  I moved the paint around quite a bit once it was on the panel.  The horizon line was changed numerous times...I wanted it to fade into the background, and needed to mix my oils over and over to get a hazy far-away look. I hope the viewer will feel good looking at this painting, as if he/she is standing in the field on a beautiful, delightful afternoon.  Thanks for looking at this painting.....contact Kay for more info on this painting.  KMW

Yesterday morning was a good day for painting

along Turtle Creek and catching the colors of 

the day.  The sky was changing quickly and the 

light and shadows were constantly moving.

I used my trusty palette knife on this panel...

my goal was to nail the colors of the day and

get the lily pads in the painting.  At first I was 

very concerned that there was too much green

in the landscape, and also so many variations

of green.  This painting is drying at the studio....

Palette Knife Painting

This painting was painted at Dutch Art Gallery for a demo on Saturday. I had thought about wiping it at one point, but once I let the paint sit for a couple of days, I made several strokes with the knife and signed it. This rooster was at the Texas State Fair, all caged up.....John and I were walking through the barns, and this fellow caught my eye.

Here is a close-up of the linen......lots of texture because the paint was layered with the palette knife. I felt like I was frosting a cake! I did wipe the background once....I was talking during the demo and really wasn't thinking about the color choice.....I wiped the dioxazine purple (was too intense) and mixed some turquoise and cobalt blue for the background. When we arrived at this tranquil spot, the early morning light was very cool in color, but as the sun began to rise from the horizon, it shone this beautiful warm light that shimmered on the water's surface and cast its hope of what was to come from the brand new day. I remember the peacefulness I felt in that moment, and a sense that anything was possible. In Aqua Dreams, by showing the contrast in the cool aqua/blues in the foreground waters against the warm golden glow on the distant pond's edge, I wanted to share that feeling of hope and promise communicated by nature.

I created this ocean scene with palette knife and extremely thick oil paint to achieve texture and suggest the energy found in nature. I wanted to capture that magical moment when the sun sets near the horizon and casts it’s sparkling glow over the ocean’s surface while illuminating the sky. The image is painted around the sides of the 1.5 inch deep gallery wrap canvas so that it looks three-dimensional and can be hung as is without a frame for a contemporary look. These chunky ocean paintings look great in pairs, threes and fours.

We hear it on the news daily.  All around us there is the heat and turbulent weather, a world in turmoil, the sins of people, the lies of politicians, rampant drug use, crimes, violence and murder.  My portrayal of the world at hand is illustrated in paint shades of red and darkness encroaching on the sanctuary of a  small church, a church that in the midst of turmoil still holds a cross high upon its steeple and offers sanctuary to all who enter. Isn't that the way of life?

Growing up in Chicago, our brutally cold winters would feel like they lasted forever so my family tried to vacation along our tropical coasts whenever possible. I loved this week we spent together – the cathartic rhythm of the ocean waves lapping against the shore as dad and I tried to ride each crest as close to the beach as possible, feeling the cool sand squish between my toes and fingers while building sand castles together, and enjoying the peacefulness at sunset as the gorgeous fireball dropped down from the sky and cast diamond-like reflections across the ocean’s surface.

Turquoise Vortex recreates that magical moment as the sun starts to descend and illuminate the water’s peaks and makes everything sparkle. Using a circular composition and bold colors enhances that feeling of motion and rhythm while suggesting the awesome energy and power found in nature.

I love it when we are driving leisurely through the countryside and we come across a gorgeous field of wildflowers. The sudden burst of color thrills your senses! Playing with color and texture, I feel like Bathed in Sunshine radiates with energy and captures the joy you feel on one of the last beautiful days of summer.
