Ginger Jar Lilies was my class demonstration in St. Louis, Missouri, this morning. The ladies in class today scored some home runs (notice the baseball reference, St. Louis?) with their lilies today, painting in oils and a few in acrylics.  I'll have to get plenty of rest tonight, tomorrow we paint French landscapes and it will be our French party! I  hope the ghost doesn't keep me awake - what ghost, you say? Read more....

A Free Tulip Video and Framed in Violet White Roses - Flower Painting Classes and Workshops by Nancy Medina Art

Framed in Violet White Roses
by Nancy Medina

Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas

Framed in Violet White roses celebrates the push and pull of warm and cool violets, and how it can be just so much fun to let your hair down and play with color. Today the pugs and I are celebrating in the studio the release of my full-length, free tulip video. Just a flower footnote for all those who watch, unlike my professional DVDs, Pink Pirouette Tulip on video was just an amateur production done by yours truly, with her puggy assistants, so the sound is not high quality. I beg your forgiveness for that, though, if you listen closely, as a consolation prize, you might just hear snoring, snorting, barking and other assorted puggy noises! Stay tuned to the end for some fun out-takes involving the helpers!

Click here to watch your free video!

I hope you enjoy this little tulip treat, I created it for you as a thanks for walking with me on this flower-strewn path of my first year as a full-time artist, and also to celebrate hitting 14,000 Facebook fans. I thank you from the bottom of my heart - with flowers - and pug kisses, too!

Out of the Blue Delphiniums and Iris is the newest painting in Flower Mound Studio, and the last hurrah of the batch of fresh Japanese iris and blue delphiniums. The little petals were making plopping noises the whole time I was painting them under the studio light, as they fell to the tabletop. They posed bravely and stood steadfastly under duress, and deserve to be remembered for all they gave in the name of color! We salute you little flowers. Oh my, it must be getting late, where did that come from?

It's likely because I am still so absolutely delighted we had a very special visitor to Flower Mound Studio today! Read more....

Violet Ballet Irises and Delphiniums - Flower Paintings by Nancy Medina Art

Violet Ballet Irises and Delphiniums
by Nancy Medina
16X16
Palette Knife/Oil on Deep Gallery Wrap Canvas

Violet Ballet is the newest daily painting in Flower Mound Studio. I just got a big shipment of deep gallery wrap canvases, and had been wanting to try something in the 16X16 size for quite some time. I love the size, it's just right for big, bold color! It's hard to get a good photograph of a palette knife painting, the paint is so thick and textured. On the surface, it looks like icing on a cake, if one were to eat a purple and blue cake, that is...

One of the things I focused on in this composition was to place a strong horizontal element (the deep dark blue purple) in order to counter all of the vertical elements (the dancing irises and delphiniums). The horizontal strip of dark purple also helps to push the little grouping of white irises and green stems forward, adding depth and a bit more drama to the painting.

Heat Wave Sunflowers and a Florida Workshop - Flower Paintings by Nancy Medina Art

Class Demonstration

Heat Wave Sunflowers was my class demonstration today in sunny Florida. The day started out a bit chilly, but we hit the 80 degree mark by afternoon. I don't mean to rub it in, but at one point I had to turn up the air conditioning just a bit. I'm always a bit sad on the last day of class, telling friends goodbye and telling that ultra giant box of chocolates goodbye, can you blame me if I cried just a little bit? Tomorrow it's back home to the boss, Studio Director AnnieBee, and her minions, and the hubby who said he has missed me. It's good to be loved. I hope your family, friends and little four footed babies are nearby and keeping you warm today, where-ever you may be!

The cold weather has truly arrived, so the pugs are piled atop one another around the easel, all in the same bed, despite there being four perfectly good beds available. I'm imagining you're on a beach right now, with a palm tree swaying nearby. Don't forget your sunscreen, for heaven's sake!

Thank you so much for all the kind notes about my Mom, she is doing a little better today. I talked to her on the phone and she told me "They got me a photo quilt!" I said, "I know!" Her appetite has picked up, also, which is a relief. Carlos made her a big pot of navy beans with ham and we bought her a can of her favorite cheese popcorn (Garrett's!) so I'm hoping she'll still have a great appetite when I visit her next week. How lucky I am to still have my Mama to hug!!!

Demonstration Detail

Necessary Pinkness was one of two demonstration paintings completed today in Flower Mound, Texas, thank you so much to all the friends who dropped by to say hello! It is always fun to produce a flower painting when you can walk over to an actual Flower Department a few feet away and replenish your fading models mid-painting! I had almost finished my first demo of the day, a hydrangea panorama, when it occurred to me some pink delphiniums sure would spice things up a bit. I just toodled on over to the flower department and there was a nice big bundle just waiting to be mine! Actually, it's probably a good thing I cannot just walk to a flower department any time I get the craving for a particular color combo. I would be penniless! Happy, but penniless!

Tender Rain Hydrangeas is the newest painting in Flower Mound Studio, celebrating a new vase I received from a dear friend. You are invited to join me for my June 21 workshop at the Dallas Arboretum. I love teaching flower painting in the most beautiful gardens in Texas, and this will be a great time of year to get dozens of flower photos during the lunch break! Okay, dozens is a conservative estimate. I've been known to fill up an entire cell phone's worth of memory in 2 hours at the Arboretum before. My husband seems to find this quite astounding, though I'm sure all of you, my flower fanatic friends, are sympathetic to the cause....!

Abundance Delphiniums and Daisies is the newest work in Flower Mound Art Studio, and less than 3 days after its acquisition, my new drying shelf is already full to capacity! I've been painting these delphiniums as quickly as I can, one canvas after another, since I know the delphinium clock is ticking and these fresh flowers only have a day or 2 left, at most. The little oranges have even less time because, tragically, the artist keeps eating them!

First Love White Roses is the daily newbie in Flower Mound Studio, posted a day in advance since I'm at Mom's this weekend. I love to create a bouquet and then let it overflow off all sides of the canvas. Even if we can only afford a few fresh flowers, we can add as many as we like in our paintings! I picked up a batch of fresh delphiniums and white roses this weekend, and couldn't resist adding one more little mug to my glassware collection. This is its painting debut, but I'm sure you'll see this one appear plenty more times in the coming weeks.

Daisies, Delphs and Tipped Over Pears is one of my newest color convections in Flower Mound Studio, where we are celebrating today because I got some GREAT news I'll be sharing with you in my next art newsletter. And I promise it's not just about the new bakery that opened around the corner, which happens to make the best chocolate mochas with homemade whipped creme you ever tasted. I enjoyed creating Daisies and Delphs, putting a little pink into the tablecloth was fun, though I confess I ate one of the pears about an hour ago. And it was delicious.

I'm stretching these fresh daisies for as long as they hold out under the spotlight, and if you think this vase is looking very familiar, you are absolutely right! What a busy day, two puggies went and got their teeth cleaned, and another went to the vet for his itchy medicine and a puggy peddi. I had to pack up all my paints and supplies after that because tomorrow I'm filming my first video! What does one wear in a painting video. Should I dress up with pearls like Julia Child? Or wear all black and a beret and pretend to have a french accent. The real question, though, is whether or not to wear a pug shirt. What do you think is proper video attire?

Daisy Dance and Justification for Another New Vase by Nancy Medina

http://nancymedina.fineartstudioonline.com/workszoom/1370748

Daisy Dance
by Nancy Medina
16X12
Oil on Archival Panel

Daisy Dance is the newest painting in Flower Mound Studio, a bit of riotous color and movement to shake things up and get the blood stirring on a chilly wintry day. I start flagging a bit around 5 pm-ish and treat myself to a chocolate mocha coffee lest I find myself slipping into pug-type habits such as afternoon naps and only getting out of bed for treats.

Today I took not one but two trips to our new market in town for fresh flowers, and came home with a bundle of fresh pink peonies, more delphiniums, and a handful of pink roses I just could not resist. Oh yes, and another new vase. In my own defense, I did break one of my favorite vases yesterday, so felt justified in bringing another one home to join my growing collection. I'm sure at this point I am in violation of a city ordinance restricting a household to ownership of no more than 250 vases or four metric tons of glassware at a time.

Petal Cascade Daisies is the newest daily painting in Flower Mound Studio, a bit of a celebration of my new painting space! I have a new patterned chair I got for half price at World Market and pots and pots of fresh flowers all set up in the space that used to be the dining room, but is now my early morning painting studio. This is technically studio number 2 in my home, and it's nice to have a bit of a change, especially since this room is all windows and lets in the gorgeous morning light to use as a backdrop for my still life setups. You'll be seeing some photos of that space very soon on my art blog, just as soon as I am finished making it a bit more presentable.

 Je T'aime Sunflower Bouquet
by Nancy Medina

Je T'aime Sunflower Bouquet was one of my six class demonstrations recently, clearly, I could not resist painting this new vase again! I went into the market today and perused the display where I found it, and not another vase like it was left. It's no wonder these disappeared so quickly. There are still plates, saucers and bowls that match. Who knows, I may have to give in to the temptation and add to that collection soon. Speaking of temptation, visit my blog today to see one of the fun Valentine's day workshop giveaways all wrapped up with a big ole bow on it! Some lucky artist is going to take this home. Do you think the winner will notice if some of the chocolates are unwrapped and missing? hmmmm...  My Valentine's workshop for Painting Romantic Flowers and Dresses is filling up fast, must be those rumors about a chocolate fountain!

I've mentioned this a time or two, but it's difficult to contain myself these days. Because each time I wake up now I think, I LOVE my job! Today was the final day of my 3 day North Texas workshop for January, and I had students from South Carolina, Louisiana, Kansas, Oklahoma, and all over the Lone Star State. I'm planning some fun giveaways in honor of Valentine's for my next workshop coming right up. Pink colors, candy, spa related gifts, the possibilities are just ENDLESS! I was really blown away by the paintings my students created this week, they produced peonies, sunflowers, delphiniums and vases in multiple styles and colors, they worked from life, and they tackled every subject with enthusiasm. I've shared just a few glimpses of their paintings on my blog today that brightened up the room this weekend, enjoy!

Wake Up Call Sunflowers was my class demonstration this morning in North Texas. We've had a fun class, I get the sense everyone is excited about Christmas coming up, and vacations coming up, and seeing family. The ladies in my group have bonded so quickly and so completely. It amazes me to watch a group of new artists come together and instantly discover they have so much in common. I suppose we are all on the same wavelength, after all! It's a beautiful thing!

Tranquility Cottage Garden by Texas Flower Artist Nancy Medina

Tranquility Cottage Garden
by Nancy Medina
18X24X1.5
Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas

Tranquility Cottage Garden is a new painting in Flower Mound Studio, I'd like to stand in this yard barefoot and listen to the insects and smell flowers on the breeze, wouldn't you? And maybe there is a cherry pie warming on the windowsill, and a white wicker rocker on the little lean to porch, and a fat yellow kitty cat nearby waiting to climb into your lap. Even with Christmas right around the corner, we can dream of flowers!
