The first light of day skims over the water. You feel the roar of the ocean. The scent of salt awakes your mind. Never-ending waves wash over the rocks then recede, leaving swirling, foamy trails in their wake before advancing again. You have been captured by the sea.

A lot of us have been or are starting to have real anxiety about the multitude of difficulties we are and will be facing because of this crisis. I believe beauty is important right now. It is for my sanity anyway.

Rooster by Kristine Kainer

Ten years ago, my family moved from the Washington, DC area to a farm in a rural part of Texas.  Of course, we wanted chickens.  Thrilled to learn that roosters are not necessary for eggs, we happily purchased a variety of young hens and soon began to enjoy the "fruits of their labor."  

One day, a friend of my husband's announced that he knew someone who had too many roosters.  Would we be willing to take one?  Halfheartedly, we said we might be interested.  A week or two passed.  Then, our lives changed.  Upon returning from a day of errands, we saw a newcomer among our flock--a scrawny, white leghorn rooster.

This bird had issues.  It was mean.  And it didn't sleep.  The crowing began around 2 AM and lasted throughout the night -- ten minutes of the most maniacal screeching followed by twenty minutes of an uneasy quiet.  Then the peace would be broken again with more ear-piercing howling.  This lasted for eleven days--ten days too many.  Needless to say, it was me or the rooster.  I won.

As we ponder a return to the farm on a full-time basis in a few years, the thought of having a rooster has returned.  They can't all be like that first one, right?  Surely, the one we got was possessed, correct?  Please feel free to convince me!  Meanwhile, enjoy this colorful, QUIET rooster painting.  You'll have a great night's sleep.

Morning Puddle - Thaw Malin iii

"Morning Puddle", this is a small painting, 6" x 8", oil on canvas panel.

Artist and friend, Susan Metzger, was visiting Martha's Vineyard this weekend. She was roaming about with her camera collecting landscape photos for inspiration for a painting exhibit she will have here next year. She is a very early riser so I suggested meeting her at sunrise on Long Point Reservation. She could gather some images and I could set up and finally do an early sunrise painting. We met up and had some great artist conversations while walking out toward the dunes. And then again when she came back from shooting and while I broke down my gear and walked back to the parking area. It is always stimulating to talk process with another artist, especially since she has a completely different approach to paint than I do...

The Painting: This was truly a favorite with the play of light behind the morning clouds. We used to live in Justin, Texas and it was pretty flat out there and not many trees. The horses were every where around us though and when I would get up at sunrise and sit on the back porch, this is what I saw every morning. I miss the country!
