Fair Winds Poppy and My Grandpa Poppy the Baseball Player

Fair Winds Poppy

The evenings I stay with my Mom she is often watching the baseball games, waiting for the Cardinals to make an appearance. Her Dad, my grandfather "Poppy," (John Dobby) was a pitcher for the St. Louis Browns, the farm team (practice team) for the St. Louis Cardinals, when she was a little girl. Read more...

Spring Formal Pink and Red Poppy Field by Texas Artist Nancy Medina

Spring Formal Pink and Red Poppy Field
by Nancy Medina
16X20
Oil on Archival Panel

I felt the need to step out of the studio and into the fields today, and painted Spring Formal Pink and Red Poppies based on the bobbing and dipping fields of flowers in Fredericksburg, Texas. The weather was clear, cool and absolutely gorgeous in Flower Mound, Texas. Studio Director AnnieBee bossed me away from the easel on at least four occasions to throw her toy du jour. After a busy morning of packing and shipping paintings, it was nice to have a few moments in the garden to sit, breathe, relax, and share quiet time with my pugs. I wanted to share that time with you, too, with a photo of a surprise from my garden this morning. The rest of its brethren seem spent for the season, but this morning the one, glorious white lady stood tall among the red roses.

SOLD ~ Sweet Dreams Poppies and a Fredericksburg Art Show by Texas Flower Artist Nancy Medina

Sweet Dreams Poppies
by Nancy Medina

SOLD
14X14
Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas

Sometimes I feel the need to express color brightly, boldly, and so thick you would need a knife and a fork to cut into it! I've been working until midnight every night for weeks preparing for upcoming workshops, my show in Fredericksburg this weekend at The Good Art Company Gallery, and all of the exciting new challenges of my full time job as an artist. How thankful I am to be able to follow my dream. I am in a state of absolute euphoric exhaustion. This is how I want to live my life, and spend my days, rushing headlong toward a dream and a life filled with color. Thank you to everyone who has joined me for the journey. Tomorrow morning, I think we all deserve donuts, what do you think?

You are cordially invited to join me in historic Fredericksburg, Texas, amidst rolling hills, cabins, beautiful vistas, and awesome German bakeries for a perfect workshop retreat!

Red Poppy Offshoot by Texas Flower Artist Nancy Medina

Poppy Offshoot
by Nancy Medina
6X8
Oil on Linen Panel

Poppy Offshoot is the newest small work in the studio. This is my first full week as a full-time artist, sans the day job as a magazine editor. Early retirement from one job so I can dedicate 7 days a week to doing what I love at the easel was a great decision, at least so far! It's strange having time to breathe and think things through instead of racing from one deadline to the next. I even turned on the television in the middle of the day to catch the news. It was liberating!

SOLD ~ Crescent Moon Red Poppy by Texas Artist Nancy Medina

Crescent Moon Red Poppy
by Nancy Medina

SOLD
8X10
Oil on Archival Panel

Crescent Moon Red Poppy is a new small work on the easel, poppies have been calling to me for over a week now so I had to give this little one some easel time. Tonight there is a perfect crescent moon, tilted just like a smile. Just like the smile I've had all day, my first day as a full-time artist. Yesterday I said goodbye to my office, my office chair, my coworkers, the parking lot, all the regular pieces of my day for the past 12 years as an editorial director. It is a bit scary, having total control of your own destiny. So far I can report with confidence, it feels wonderful!

Winter Poppy Garden and a Chocolate Cake from Scratch by Texas Artist Nancy Medina

Winter Poppy Garden
by Nancy Medina
36X24
Palette Knife/Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas

Winter Poppy Garden is the newest large work in the studio, and since it is a holiday weekend, it seemed the perfect time to make one my Mom's favorite cakes from scratch. Jo's Chocolate Cake came from one of those old co-op cookbooks from the 1960s. I thought you might like to see the recipe exactly as it appears, authentic with no fancy fonts or artificial ingredients included, so I've placed a photo of the page on my art blog today. I substituted milk with a teaspoon of sour creme for the buttermilk, and it tasted just as good. Be sure to serve warm with a big glass of milk! It's a perfect snack for a chilly winter evening while lounging on the couch with a snuggly friend a great old movie on TV.

The Gathering - Poppies in Red by Texas Flower Artist Nancy Medina

The Gathering - Poppies in Red
by Nancy Medina
12X12
Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas

The Gathering, Poppies in Red, is the newest red poppy painting in the studio, a companion to Surrounded Poppies, and I am slowly but surely running out of shelves for all the wet paintings to perch upon around here! I packed up the boss, her fav toy du jour and cushy pillow and headed to Mom's house today. This evening Mom showed me how to make a chocolate sheet cake from scratch and it was just so delish fresh out of the oven we both had three pieces before it cooled. AnnieBee supervised, so it was perfect!

Surrounded - Red Poppy Painting by Texas Flower Artist Nancy Medina

Surrounded - Red Poppies
by Nancy Medina

Surrounded is one of a few new poppies taking shape here as flowers bloom and Dove chocolate rapidly vanishes in Flower Mound Studio. I am fairly certain that painting particular colors helps me keep the events in my life in perspective and I choose them according to what moods or emotions have filled my day. This was definitely one of those days when I needed to get that color out there and let it jump and shout a bit. Shouting with color can be good for the soul!

Spotlight Poppies and a Kansas City Workshop by Texas Flower Artist Nancy Medina

Spotlight Poppies by Nancy Medina
16X12
Oil on Archival Panel

Poppies are blooming throughout Flower Mound Studio tonight, as I work on a new commission and move orange, pink, blue and green around on a canvas in an effort to appeal to the muses. They're demanding bright, loose, cheerful color today, to combat a plethora of stress! Relax, loosen the shoulders, and just breathe - let the color flow - I tell my art students this is the gift they've given themselves when they come to workshops. This is their chance to let a beautiful part of themselves shine!

I'm delighted and absolutely thrilled my first Kansas City area workshop is almost full months in advance of the date, but I do hope that won't leave you out if you were planning to join me there in June. There are two seats open so don't delay - I can't wait to make bright flowers bloom with you in my home state of Missouri!

Put a little joy in your brush and check out my workshops here!

Fire and Ice Poppies and a January Flower Painting Workshop by Texas Artist Nancy Medina

Fire and Ice Poppies
by Nancy Medina
16X12
Oil on Archival Panel

Fire and Ice Poppies is the newest painting in Flower Mound Studio. I wanted to express some warm colors today because Baby It's Cold Outside! Fire and Ice is a bit of palette knife, a bit of brushwork, and a bit of fingerpainting to pull and push those bright colors around. Working wet on wet can be a really fun way of making colors do unpredictable things.

I shared some great news in my newsletter today. I'm excited to announce my sold out January 11-13 flower painting workshop now has seats open. Many thanks to the folks at the Jaycee Parks Center for the Arts in Irving, Texas, who helped to move me to a larger room to make space for more students. Put a little joy in your brush and let's make flowers bloom in the new year. Read more about my workshops here...

Three Divas Red Poppies by Texas Flower Artist Nancy Medina

Three Divas ~ Red Poppies
by Nancy Medina
8X8
Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas

I had a visit to the studio today by a very nice couple who took home a large poppy painting, which I took as a sign that I needed to paint....poppies! This new small work has nice deep edges and if I were smarter with the camera, I'd also include a photo of the edge looking all painted. Unfortunately, my photography skills are on a par with my cooking skills. I can tear open a bag of Cocoa Chex Mix snack bites like a pro! There are no poppies blooming in my yard this week, only flowers, and green grass, which I find a bit depressing because I am ready for....snow!

Painted Poppy by Texas Flower Artist Nancy Medina

Painted Poppy by Nancy Medina

Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas

Painted Poppy is the newest small work in Flower Mound Studio, as we end a day of celebrating. Today is my wedding anniversary, 12 years with Carlos. It is also our little cheesy pug Java's 12th birthday! *confetti* We celebrated with extra bites of cheese at snack time for everyone, and a new special nest bed for Java. Now he can climb into his own little downy soft tent and have a quiet place to nap while the rest of his little herd runs hither and yon being noisey. Happy birthday little cheesy guy!

Breezy Solo Poppy and Purple Garden Irises by Texas Flower Artist Nancy Medina

Breezy Solo Poppy by Nancy Medina
8X10
Oil on Museum Quality Linen Board

This morning I woke up to find more purple irises blooming in the garden, the special double bloomers I purchased last season from Argyle Acres Iris Gardens, and my favorite color, purple! There was a bit of celebration going on, as my Facebook Fan Page reached the 1000 fan mark yesterday. I'll be giving away a painting to one of my Facebook fans to celebrate this month, so sign up for my art newsletter for the announcement to come! Today was our annual PugOWeen event in Grapevine, Texas. With over 750 pugs and peeps in costume, this was the biggest animal rescue fundraiser in North Texas. Here's a video from the talented Mark Nardeccia of Shagly Photography, who has done more than his share of good works for these precious rescue pugs.

Sing to Me Poppies and an Art Studio Tour by Texas Artist Nancy Medina

Sing to Me Poppies by Nancy Medina
16X20
Oil on Linen Board

Sing to Me Poppies is drying on the easel (yet another painting named for a song that is running about in my head today), as the poppy parade continues in Flower Mound Studio. Today on the art blog I'm sharing a mini tour of my studio, and you are in such great luck, since Studio Director AnnieBee is in residence. It's not often we are all graced with her solo presence, since she rarely enters or exits a room without her minions at her heels. Today her brothers and her sisters were busy helping Dad hold down the couch during the football game, so AnnieBee had the substantive job of keeping me completely on track and organized. Grab a glass of iced tea and a cookie from the kitchen, and enjoy the tour!

Sold ~ Crazy Love Poppies by Texas Flower Artist Nancy Medina

Crazy Love Poppies by Nancy Medina

SOLD

Crazy Love is the song that's been traveling around in my head all day. If I make it the name of my newest painting, maybe it will give me a rest! I remember a song called Crazy Love when I was young, I thought it was by Toto, but when I googled it today to find the lyrics, it's not appearing anywhere. It's enough to make me just a little....crazy!

Embrace the Light Poppies Step by Step by Texas Flower Artist Nancy Medina

Embrace the Light Poppies
by Nancy Medina
16X20
Oil on Linen Board

I painted poppies again today, the poppy siren song I've been heeding lately here in Flower Mound Studio is not quite finished. I wanted to take a loose approach, so I started with a slightly rough surface, adding texture to my gesso. I placed large, quick patches of some cool transparents for the greens, and then red transparents for the flowers. I had to work quickly to get everything blended before the colors dried. For the final step, I used bright opaques. Visit my art blog today to see the painting step by step!

What a perfect day in North Texas today - cool breezes and new toys for the pugs, what on earth could be better? I'm packing up supplies to ship to Memphis-Germantown, Tennessee this week, with a workshop coming up there very soon. I'm so excited to be traveling to stay with friends and paint with some very talented students in 2 weeks.  As soon as I get back, I'm heading to Colorado and then the next workshop is in the Texas Hill Country at The Good Art Company studio school. I would love to paint with you in 2012, so check out my workshops coming up and let's make some color happen!

Poppy Zest Table Fest and a Workshop Winner by Texas Flower Artist Nancy Medina

Poppy Zest Table Fest
by Nancy Medina
48X30
Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas

Poppy Zest Table Fest is done! Thanks to all my friends on Facebook who helped create the perfect name for this painting. I am picturing this in a breakfast nook, something to watch over you while you eat your croissant warm from the oven and sip your double mocha with (extra!!) whippy creme each morning, with a little snorfley critter near your feet in your lap waiting for crumbs. I've been having so much fun creating these big floral table-scapes lately, but it's time to produce some new small paintings, too, so stay tuned for those.  I'll be announcing the winner of my Paint Flowers From Life contest in my newsletter next week. Be sure to sign up for my newsletter to find out who will win a 3-day flower painting workshop!
