French Dahlias Flower Market is another memento from my trip to Southern France this year. I have so many wonderful photos of flower markets and brightly colored umbrellas it was hard to decide which one to paint. The umbrellas in the open air markets were all shapes and sizes, and many looked like they were well into middle age, sagging here and there, but still colorfully standing sentinel over their wares.

Southern France is very different than the US, there are few fast food places, grocery stores or shopping malls. People there really do visit these centuries-old markets for their bread, cheese, meats, fresh eggs and flowers. How does one shop in an open air market? Read more...

Bougainvillea Cottage Garden

SOLD
16X12
Oil on Archival Panel

One of the things I miss most about living in California is bougainvillea, in all its bright frilly patterns and colors. My favorite is peach, but I do love the fuschia-pinky purple too. I'm hoping to get photos of bougainvillea and all the other beautiful flowers that grow there this weekend in Coronado, California, before my solo show on Saturday. Stay tuned to the blog and to my facebook page for photos!

Balboa California Flower Market by Texas Artist Nancy Medina

Balboa Flower Market is a new small daily painting in response to the DPW challenge and my upcoming trip to San Diego, California. One of the things I miss most about living in Southern California is having bougainvillea everywhere, most especially the peach colored blossoms, and the farmers markets in almost every town. Bags of fresh Fuji apples, and armloads of flowers were always the pick of the day for me, and for my little souldog, Buddy, who went everywhere I went when I lived there.

White Roses and a New Workshop by Texas Flower Artist Nancy Medina

Wayfarer White Roses
by Nancy Medina
16X20
Oil on Linen Panel

Because my spring workshops are full, I have opened a new 2-day workshop February 15-16. Put a little joy in your brush and let's make flowers bloom in brilliant colors, even though it's a bit early for spring blossoms to appear!

Wayfarer White Roses was based on the flowers of Coronado, California, and has graced the cover of the Dallas Arboretum Adult Education Catalog and Web site. I've revived these blossoms to celebrate the announcement today of the Dallas Arboretum Blooms Festival coming up this spring. It's the best time to visit the gardens and get a few hundred photos of tulips, azaleas, pansies, daffodils, cherry blossoms, and dozens of other flowers all blooming simultaneously! It's been a great week for my little home grown art studio, and I learned today that my painting Cuties and Hydrangeas received first place for the national Bold Brush People's Choice Award contest. Thank you to everyone who voted!
