We ended our Florida workshop last week with a plein air outing in a beautiful garden in Tamarac on Monday. What a treat to paint under swaying palm trees with cool breezes and sunshine. The owner of this back yard haven stopped by my flower painting class with his chocolate Lab and invited us to paint on Friday, he had heard we were scouting locations in his neighborhood and he was an artist, too! Visit my art blog to see pictures of our big day in the Florida sun!

Check out My New Video Here!

We painted daisies and luscious bright pink and peach bougainvillea in my Florida class on Day 1, and spent part of that time trying to figure out what the plural of bougainvillea was/is/could be. When we weren't discussing grammar, we mixed warm and cool purples, and talked about the value of glazing over opaques, and the cool way you can make colorful jewel tones glow in your florals. On Day 2, we painted sunflowers. There's a sneak peek at Bobbi's gorgeous sunflower, a teaser for my post tomorrow so stay tuned to my art blog!

Bougainvillea and Daisies - Painting Flowers in Sunny Florida by Nancy Medina

Bougainvillea and Daisy Duo

Class Demonstration

12X12
Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas

We painted bougainvillea and daisies in my Fort Lauderdale, Florida workshop this morning. What fun to paint with ladies from Utah, Canada, New Hampshire, Minnesota and across Florida today. We did not spot any gators, but we did see plenty of flowers blooming! It's always good to paint with palm trees swaying outside the classroom window, don't you agree? Get your beach shoes on, strum your ukelele, and stay tuned to my art bloggy, I'll be sharing even more pictures from sunny Florida with you this weekend!

SOLD ~ Coronado Island Sunset Arbor and the 88th Annual Flower Show by Nancy Medina

Coronado Island Sunset Arbor
by Nancy Medina

SOLD
16X12
Oil on Archival Panel

Coronado Island Sunset Arbor is almost as much a watercolor application of oils as it is a traditional oil painting. I love experimenting with transparent paints, and staining my canvas in blocks of light, color and shape. Letting those transparent paints shine through, without covering them, can give your painting a feeling of depth.

Tomorrow I fly to one of the most beautiful places in California, Coronado Island. Rest assured my camera battery is charging, and I've got my comfy walking shoes packed - first things first, we stop somewhere for excellent fish tacos, then grab our flower show map to start tracking down and photographing all the top award winning gardens and cottages. The 88th Annual Flower Show will be in full swing in Spreckles Park, and I'll have a whole day before my solo show at the gallery begins. I hope to see you there!

One of the things I miss most about living in California is bougainvillea, in all its bright frilly patterns and colors. My favorite is peach, but I do love the fuschia-pinky purple too. I'm hoping to get photos of bougainvillea and all the other beautiful flowers that grow there this weekend in Coronado, California, before my solo show on Saturday. Stay tuned to the blog and to my facebook page for photos!
