The dichotomy of cactuses has always fascinated me. Some of the toughest plants on the planet, they thrive where resources are scarce. Spines scream "don't mess with me". Not everyone sees the beauty inherent in their form. Then comes Spring and with it their undeniable allure. They erupt with vibrant blooms that span the spectrum. In the case of the Lace Cactus, a neon magenta-purple the size of the cactus itself. These short-lived, delicate as lace flowers providing the perfect contrast and the perfect lure for the beetles that pollinate them. I am fortunate that they grow wild in my yard.

This is Floyd. Floyd has a girlfriend that lives across the street. Her name is Daisy and she is a stunning Australian Shepherd. I’d call them star-crossed lovers separated by fences and the COVID stay-at-home order, but in reality, she won’t give him the time of day. He sits starry eyed at the front of our fence just hoping to catch a glimpse of her.

Before we knew the new neighbors had an Aussie and Aussie puppy, Daisy ran up to my husband when he arrived home from work and lay down at his feet. It was cold, rainy and she didn’t have a collar, so naturally we brought her inside. At the time, Floyd had wanted nothing to do with our new adoptee puppy, Ziggy, and avoided him like the plague to come, extreme social distancing, but Daisy was different. It was true love at least from his perspective. Daisy was utterly indifferent to Floyd's gentle nudges, invitations to bound around the yard or a walk under the moonlight. She spent the night with us and as I was on my way the next morning to check her for a microchip, I thought I ought to ask the neighbors just in case. She was theirs and ever since Floyd has been vying for her attention at every turn. He's a young, vibrant, handsome, albeit neutered, male and if she can't see his ability to love deeply then she doesn't deserve his loyalty. If only I could convince him of that.

Floyd is another shelter rescue. This time from Breckenridge, TX. Thanks to Judith C. Olsson Smith who shared a post with me knowing at the time we had recently lost an Australian Shepherd to cancer.

Pet Commissions by Rebecca Zook

This is another sold piece, but is one of my favorite small works of my own pets. Mouse has since passed away, but will always be remembered as our benevolent Alpha cat allowing strays to stay as long as they followed the rules.

Mouse was adopted from the Dallas SPCA and made himself at home immediately. He had been adopted along with another kitten and both returned before I saw him at one of their events at PetSmart. I just stopped to pet him. No one was paying attention since he was older than the rest of the kittens. I started to walk away and he reached out and grabbed the sleeve of my shirt and looked me right in the eyes. That was it, of course he had to come home with me. He chose me as his new Mama.

This is my cat Mouse, being Mouse. Upside-down is his favorite position and he's just about to reach out and grab me. "Stop and smell the roses Mama or better yet, stop and pet the kitty." Sometimes life needs a little change in perspective.

Sparrow's Garden | Cat in Garden Setting by Rebecca Zook

Today was garden therapy for me as well as part of Friday and Saturday. I weeded about half of what I need to, moved several plants around, planted some bareroot daylilies, caladium bulbs and lantana I bought before COVID and marveled at what has already started blooming and the plants that are returning.

This piece is titled "Sparrow's Garden" and shows one of our cats in my garden. My good friend has the original. She is one of those wonderful people that traps and neuter/spays feral cats and finds home for any kittens. Sparrow was one of those kittens.

The first light of day skims over the water. You feel the roar of the ocean. The scent of salt awakes your mind. Never-ending waves wash over the rocks then recede, leaving swirling, foamy trails in their wake before advancing again. You have been captured by the sea.

Lunga Puffins by Rebecca Zook

I'm a little behind the curve right now. As I said to Ed last night, my daily life is really the same as it was before. He started mentioning dolphins in Italian canals, a civet wandering the street in Asia and much more. I hadn't heard any of this. My first thought was amazement at how rapidly Nature reclaims her domain. This quickly turned to horror at how palpable human impact is, but also how maybe smaller changes could have immediate impacts not just on the environment, but ourselves. I'm a realist. I know the issues are complicated and people have to make a living, but I hope lessons we are learning right now have a lasting impact. Companies who wouldn't let employees work from home are learning that in many cases, it's more than possible. Families are reconnecting. Neighbors are helping each other. I am watching all this and realizing I need to allow myself more down time. Self-imposed stress is just as bad. Painting is not down time when it's paying the bills. My Zen is my garden. I'm going to work in the garden this weekend and recapture some calm.

Enjoy these puffins. The trip Ed and I took to the wilds of Scotland is something I will never forget.

Lunga Puffins

Cities are not for me. I prefer to visit the wilder places on this planet and the Isle of Lunga did not disappoint. It is 200 acres of unspoiled native habitat for a variety of seabirds, but the puffin is what drew me to the island. I've been enamored with this comical bird since childhood and observing them in person was truly a childhood dream realized. They had no fear of humans, so were mere feet from me busily digging their burrows and lining them with grass to house eggs for the next breeding cycle. Pausing only to dive from the cliffside to bring back fish for last years nearly grown chicks.

“The Watcher” Coyote Fine Art Painting by Rebecca Zook

“The Watcher”

A survivor, coyote is always watching. Loved and hated by man, he must be clever to find ways to survive in his changing world. Curiosity leads to opportunity. Opportunities he cannot afford to lose. Coyote is more though. He still finds joy in the face of adversity, dancing and singing in the moonlight.

If I have an animal totem, it would be the coyote; encountering them at sporadic points in my life that left me in awe. As a young child, we traveled from Texas to California with a travel trailer one summer, stopping at roadside attractions along the way. I remember being at the edge of the wild desert and feeling eyes on me. I turned to see a coyote. We stood facing each other, but I did not feel threatened. I was mesmerized. I turned back around to show my Dad, but the coyote had vanished leaving a lasting impression that is still vivid in my mind. As a teenager I was driving home late at night and spied a coyote following the railroad tracks in the the middle of suburbia. With no one around, I stopped the car. He stopped trotting and once again we were face-to-face, studying one another, until he slowly turned to continue down the lonely tracks finally fading from view. This time my awe was tinged with sadness thinking about his displacement from ancestral ranges by humans. There were additional solitary sightings, just me and him, over the years where I saw his swiftness, strength and sleek beauty. I had a coyote take up residence under our home one winter. I will forever see the coyote as a survivor. In a way, that is also how I see myself.

“Soul Searching”

With eyes as big as the moon, the Great Horned Owl sees into your soul, unmasking the hidden and bringing forth wisdom. He guides you to new heights on silent wings.

Everyone in the neighborhood knew my house when I was a kid. My Dad’s giant HAM radio tower couldn’t be missed. At Christmas, it was the house with the tower topped by a Great Horned Owl. I’m not positive what attracted him there at winter only, but we used to say, it was the Christmas lights. You could see them reflected in his eyes. He’d take flight and swoop low following our street, his wingspan seemingly spanning the width of the road. Completely silent in flight. I can’t think of a Great Horned Owl without this scene coming to mind.

I picked up the recent copy of National Geographic that was on the coffee table and held it up to my husband. The cover had an image of a planet with "Is there anybody out there?" in large block letters accompanying it. I said, "Do you know what the next thing that popped into my mind was?" I got a puzzled stare. "Just nod if you can hear me. Is there anyone home?" He laughed. Okay, it was one word off the actual Pink Floyd lyrics, but my brain continually makes associations with things that I see, read or hear with song lyrics that then get stuck in my head for extended periods of time making my relationship with music…complicated. Freeing myself from one song often just means replacing it with another. The phenomena even follows me into my dreams. One particularly beautiful repeating dream where I am wandering through the most incredible museum in existence uses Moon River from Breakfast at Tiffany's as an integral element.

Mostly I like the way music affects my emotional state. I always awake from the museum dream bathed in tranquility and find myself humming Moon River throughout the rest of the day. One song can draw me out of a bout of self pity. Music can dissipate anger or in an instant bring back vivid recollections that only seemed long forgotten. Researchers theorize that melody helps embed memories. I know I can still 'sing' the preamble to the Constitution thanks to the Saturday morning School House Rock of my childhood. These properties are being used to help dementia patients. Even those who have ceased normal communication have been known to spontaneously sing or have music noticeably calm them.
