This small painting was inspired by a Hill Country trip

last spring.  On a driving tour of the LBJ Ranch I 

took some great pictures of the cattle.  

I wanted to get the colors right on this painting,

and not get fussy on the details. 

The Texas landscape is beautiful on the ranch

and the cattle are amazing. 

This is painting #2 in the 30 Paintings in 30 Days Challenge!

This little calf was down at Jerry Miller's ranch in the hill country. She had a very sweet face, and was about the only animal on the ranch who cooperated with me...she was not on the move and I was able to really study her. I wanted to capture her innocent face just looking out as she laid under the tree. She was watching all the activity going on...lots of longhorns, bulls, dogs, horses and even a rattlesnake was seen that afternoon. And of course, all of us painting and taking photos as we were taking the Karen Bonnie workshop. I finished the grass and a few details up yesterday in the studio, so this painting is very wet. I will frame her up in a gold plein air frame. If you are interested in this painting, please contact me. "My Town" is one of the nine paintings that will be in the Preservation is the Art of the City Show in September.

We are reminded of our old west heritage when we watch cowboys drive the Fort Worth herd through the stockyards. As a former resident of Fort Worth and a native Texan, I consider Fort Worth "My Town", a town of cowboys and culture.

Horses, like dogs are extremely social animals. They need another warm body nearby, and preferably their own kind. Every now and then you'll run into one who is perfectly happy all alone, but it's rare. They will follow cows around while they graze if they have no other choice. It's their nature to be part of a herd. And many race horses are stabled with companion ponies or goats for that very reason. It keeps them happy, proving that there is a match out there for everyone and every animal.
