LBJ Ranch by Kay Wyne

LBJ Ranch
8" x 16" Oil on Panel
This small painting was inspired by a Hill Country trip
last spring.  On a driving tour of the LBJ Ranch I
took some great pictures of the cattle.
I wanted to get the colors right on this painting,
and not get fussy on the details.
The Texas landscape is beautiful on the ranch
and the cattle are amazing.
This is painting #2 in the 30 Paintings in 30 Days Challenge!
Thanks for looking at this blog....
Have a good and safe holiday.
Kay

Road Less Taken

"Road less Traveled" ©2009 Niki Gulley

11" x 14" oil painting

Towards the end of our trip to Colorado, snowfall had come early causing all of the autumn foliage to drift to the ground. I liked the way the bare tree limbs tangled together in the misty distance, set against the vivid fallen leaves in the foreground. What surprises lay in wait for us around the next corner?

Sunburst, White Rock Lake

"Sunburst, White Rock Lake" ©2009 Niki Gulley
pastel • 8" x 10"

I wanted to depict a different vantage point of White Rock Lake and I was intrigued by how my camera captured the sunlight peering through the clouds. It almost looks like a beam of light is shining down from heaven! So, I decided to go ahead and paint it that way to suggest an aura of mystery in the scene.

The Painting: This was truly a favorite with the play of light behind the morning clouds. We used to live in Justin, Texas and it was pretty flat out there and not many trees. The horses were every where around us though and when I would get up at sunrise and sit on the back porch, this is what I saw every morning. I miss the country!

The Story of Prairie Bayou

24X24
Oil on Gallery Profile Canvas

I was the editor of a horse racing magazine years ago, and one of the stories we published was about a race horse named Prairie Bayou. Prairie Bayou was famous more for his demise on the racetrack than for his amazing racing career.

With all of the media coverage and speculation, I often wondered if anyone loved him for something other than his ability to make money for his owners. This is the home I've made for him in my mind, a peaceful place to rest with plenty of delicious plants to nibble. I haven't forgotten you, Prairie Bayou.
