With a few details to go, a few strokes here

and there....it could be completed today.

I want to work on the eyes, and have a

critique on it at the studio.  It is always 

good to have some input from other

artists.  I wanted the horses to be bold,

energetic and colorful with lots of 

movement and personality.  My 

reference photos for this painting was

from three different sources/photos that

I took at different times and locations.  The

background and foreground has changed

from the initial composition.  More work

in the studio today, as I am starting a 

new series for 2014!

Western art is my very favorite. I love horses, and cowboys......boots, spurs, you name it!

When I started painting, this is what I really wanted to paint, but it is not always easy.

Sometimes I just jump in and do something western anyway!

These horses are running free, I'd like to join them and forget all the responsibilities in life.

I have not blogged in weeks. I have been painting all summer but with teaching art classes and  summer camps everyday, moving kids to and from college, to out of state summer jobs, moving kids to their own houses, setting up and  teaching fall classes, plus the horses, cats, dogs, yard work, house work, this list is endless, I flake out before I take the photos to blog.  Of course then you have to crop and upload.  It seems there is always one more thing to do.  Oh, rearrange and paint after the kids move out.  The list just goes on. I know that we are all too busy these days and need to take time for the important things in life. I did this summer, but now that the kids are off,  I am turning over a new leaf, making time for photos and blogging.  Of course my kids are laughing because I am always turning over a new leaf, it usually relates to losing weight or working out; I just finished a bowl of ice cream.  Hopefully I will do better at blogging than dieting. At least I have made the time to paint, that's the passion. Take time to enjoy your loved ones.

Catching a wind as it cooled down, I wandered the pastures and looked around. I could have been here or there in Texas or New Jersey, Colorado, you name the place. Water, horses, cedars, field, sun playing the end of day... it felt just right...

Once In A Blue Moon16" x 20" Gallery Wrap CanvasContemporary Oil PaintingOnce in a Blue Moon ... a phrase that we have all heard. This was a topic of conversation in the Wyne house lately....it is a common way of saying not very often, but what exactly is a Blue Moon? It is the second Full Moon to occur in a single calendar month. That occured last December, when we had a Full Moon on the 2nd and the 31st. According to the experts, there will be 41 months that have two Full Moons in every century, so you could say that once in a Blue Moon actually means once every two-and-a-half years.Once in a Blue Moon is also a title for lyrics to songs....like the Van Morrison song....When I started the above painting, I had a collage look going, starting with the words, Once in a Blue Moon painted on the canvas several times in different font/colors/sizes. If you look closely you can see them under the layers of paint. You can also see two images of horses, geometric figures and layers of paint along with oil crayons. There is alot of movement in the painting and the eye jumps from one shape to the next shape. This contemporary abstrct oil painting is now signed and completed after weeks on the easel. Roaming Free By Barbara Hackney

More Donkeys !! These donkeys were spotted roaming free in the foot hills outside of Reno. It was the first time I knew there were spotted donkeys like the paint horses. They were in a small herd which included several paints and some babies. What an inspiration.
