New North Light Book

 I can't believe 2014 is almost gone.  It has been such a good year! All of our family is healthy and happy and we got a new Granddaughter-n-law this year.  We have been so blessed in every way.
I have had a good 'art' year! We got a new building for me to hang my work in as well as teach and share my love of painting and creating.  It has been so awesome having my own place to go out and teach! I don't have to load everything up, etc.  My little Backyard Gallery and Studio has been such a blessing.  I did the 30 day challenge in January and September as well as 2 online sketchbook classes.
Now to end the year, I have some news! Wow..a great year to end one and start another.

I got word today saying my mixed-media art has been selected for publication in
Incite 3: The Art of Storytelling, that is published by North Light Books.
The painting that was selected is  'Wyoming Cowboy', a torn paper collage. So to go along with 'Story Telling'... I met this cowboy in 2013 when I got to go to Wyoming for a week workshop.  We got to go out to his ranch, and I took photos of him off an on all week because of the way he dressed. He didn't look like our Texas Cowboys.  I loved his hat, and his silk scarves!
His family has been there close to Dubois, WY for generations.  We spent an afternoon there, and it was an awesome time seeing the corrals and barns that were made with logs.  John loved sharing his family's  home, and barns.  He wanted us to go through the house where he grew up. It was like it was when he was growing up. Just like someone still lived there.  That morning he tracked a bear by the corrals. I hope I get to go back again! It was such a great time, and wonderful memories!

 Thank you all for your support and encouragement for the past years! 

My prayer is that we will be all healthy and happy in 2015!

Throughout the past six years, I have taken time to ride out through the pasture with my now 95 year old father to check his cattle. Dad would drive the Ford Explorer over pastureland, and I would take pictures of cattle from the passenger's seat. "The Beefmaster" was the first painting from our rides. 

The original painting is in my personal art collection, but the image is available as a giclee print, and I have only two prints remaining.

Sharon Hodges: Basket Weaver, 24x24

Another of the native American series...a woman weaving baskets, this being a study for a larger piece that will show some of her baskets all around her...I think the forms will be interesting in the strong light.  My favorite thing about these paintings is the costuming, if you will...the opportunity to work with the colors and textures of decoration and draping of the clothing...not that it has to be luxurious, but just the layers and variety of fabrics and colors and the excuse to pile on the paint and smash it around...this will get expensive as these canvases get expansive, but I think the larger scale will be yield looser drawing...I am trying to get farther and farther away from the canvas with the brushwork...to the point of adding extensions to my large brushes... (can you say stick this brush into a 3-4 foot bamboo cutting?  Now that, friends, will get you away from the canvas!)

My goal here was to show the proud native American Indian woman rising from the prairie...ok, so I got really carried away with all the textures and the layers of paint...if you don't believe me, look at this painting on my new website and use the zoom feature. I do love lots of paint. The feathers may be my favorite part, just layers and layers of bits of color. And I love the strong features of this figure. Painting faces is always challenging , but I am pleased with this one's expressive bearing...I'm going to keep working on this series. I have always been intrigued with the first Americans, the native Americans, and stories of their lives were my favorite reading subject as a child. I often chose to write my school reports about these peoples, so it may not be surprising that I have finally chosen to paint this subject. It is intimidating. I am particularly interested in native American women, who had more critical roles in daily tribal life than many of us would ever have imagined. While I am not in a position to render a great deal of scholarly information on the subject, I am enjoying painting these women...they are strong featured and often have interesting clothing and ornament. The snow has been falling all day and the wind has blown like nobody's business. Yesterday it was 79 degrees. I got sunburned working in the garden, and I was inspired to paint flowers!
I awoke this morning to blustery winds, 32 degrees and fat snowflakes, desperately trying to stick on the warm ground.
Mike and I were scheduled to ring the bell for the Salvation Army in front of the local WalMart at noon, so we journeyed into town through the blizzard.
Until today I had been rather glum about this year's Christmas, but standing in the blowing snow and wishing friends and neighbors "Merry Christmas" totally changed my mood. By the time we finished our assigned hour, had shopped and visited a friend in the nursing home, the roads were becoming dangerous so we headed slowly for home. We passed 6 cars in the ditch in our 12 mile journey. (All were being helped.) A long, cold afternoon in front of the fire, listening to old time radio programs, reading and painting loomed. Life is good.
We all need to remember that the reason for Christmas is NOT to have a contest for who gets the biggest pile of goodies that hold our interest for 5 minutes. We need to remember that God only wants us to be more like him every day of the year - giving and FORgiving. And every time we do so, we get closer to him.
God bless ya'll this Christmas and remember to keep laughing at Al Gore - Global Warming hasn't hit Texas yet!

In between the "serious" paintings, I am compelled to just paint color - but it seems like I still have to paint horses....oh well, so shoot me.
It's another dark, wintry day in Texas. It even snowed briefly this morning. The good news is that winter rarely lasts for very long in Texas. In fact I can remember a number of Christmas days where it was 70 degrees or warmer. But today is miserable. Soooo to create warm fuzzies, I have fired up the wood stove in the studio and placed a pot of bubbling venison stew on it. The dog and kitty consider me their best friend right now.
Just 20 days until the Winter Solstice and the days will begin to lengthen again. I sympathize with my Norway friends!

Texas Longhorn - UT Mascot

I hope my brother doesn't see the title of this painting. He and I (and my son and husband) are all Texas Tech Red Raiders and the University of Texas is an arch rival. But I have mellowed in my old age - after all, my son-in-law is an Aggie and my daughter graduated from Tarleton, a member of the A & M system. None of those schools have a mascot that is as much fun to paint as a longhorn, though. At least in my opinion!
The model for this one belongs to a neighbor and he was an award winner in his prime - both in body conformation and horn growth. Lonnie actually owns several longhorn steers as well as a bull and a number of cows. People in Texas keep longhorn steers just because, and they don't feel the need to explain it any further. Some folks seem compelled to collect one of every color - which is probably impossible since there is a huge variety!

The Painting: I continue to experiment this summer using my acrylics more. With this high humidity it is almost impossible to get oils to dry. I have never 'loved' acrylics, but with the situation as it is, I am learning more about them and their flexibility compared to oils. I have about decided they are as different as night and day. This painting began with pinks, oranges and reds washed thickly over the background. From there the layering of acrylics creates a wash and drip effect and thickening of layers provides contrast in both color and texture.
