I love to paint and try to paint all kinds of subjects.  This is a chicken yard and we are trying to decide if we want to get some chickens in our new country home.  I have discovered I really love yard eggs. I had forgotten how much better they taste than store bought eggs. 

"Walking the Walk" is my version of  our chicken coop.  My Rooster is very colorful with his tail feathers.

It's the weekend--time ease into the day with the sights, sounds, and aroma of bacon sizzling in the black cast iron skillet, eggs gently frying in a melted dollop of butter on the next burner, and bread in the toaster turning a golden brown.  Just add orange juice (sorry, I still don't like coffee), a newspaper, and fluffy slippers--the perfect start to the day!

What did you have for breakfast this morning?  Hopefully, it was something delectable and nutritious like an egg.  Did you know that the vitamins, minerals, protein, and antioxidants from an egg aid in brain function, muscle strength, weight management, and sustained energy?  I never truly thought about it.  Sounds like a "no-brainer" to me.  Guess what I am having for breakfast tomorrow?

Farmyard Drama, A Rooster and His Gaggle, is an excerpt from a 30X40 commissioned painting which will be a holiday surprise present for a family who loves - you guessed it - chickens! I grew up on a farm with chickens, pigs, and cows, and there was never a dull moment. I cannot say the chickens were my favorite animals, I admit freely that I did like the pigs so much more. They had such funny, exuberant personalities, rolling about in the mud and having very extensive conversations with me through the fence, especially if I was scratching their bristly backs with a nice stick.

Our first two pigs were named Henry and Louise by my father. Louise was named after a friend at his office, Western Union, and it was actually meant as a compliment. When we got home from school each day, my sisters and I each had our own assigned chores. Mine was feeding the pigs! Yes, I came from such refined roots, it is true, but I would never have traded my childhood on the farm for any other. Away from town, away from distractions, long summers reading and exploring, it was sheer magic.

This colorful rooster is eyeing you! He was one of the roosters that I photographed on the Dallas Chicken Coop Tour last year.....he wasn't this colorful. I got carried away with the color....the violets, blues, crimson, and even some magenta. I used a wide brush on most of him...This fine feathered friend has attitude and will be looking for a new home. He was shipped to a gallery in Santa Fe this morning....very early this morning. Last year, John Wyne and I did the Dallas Coop Tour on a Sunday afternoon….It was a tour around the neighborhood, viewing the chicken coops. Actually, it was very interesting…it took us four hours (with map in hand) to hit eleven coops inside the Dallas city limits. Not out in the country! I got lots of pics of roosters, chickens, and even a turkey. Lots of great painting material!
Coop is the name of this feathered friend….this painting did not have a name until I delivered it to the gallery, when Pam Massar at The Dutch Art Gallery named him….for the Coop Tour. This contemporary oil painting is on a 30” x 30” canvas. I used lots of oil paint on him…I hope to be posting some more paintings from our little tour. Coop sold on Saturday to a couple who saw this painting in the window at Dutch Art Gallery. I am thrilled that Coop has a new home. Thanks for viewing this blog! Retro Rooster Collage

10 x 14 3/4 mixed media collage done over a failed geranium watercolor. Rooster head/neck cut out from a failed chickens watercolor. Newspaper, Cheap Joe's catalog pages, cocktail napkins, India ink, acrylics all went into this fun piece. Look closely you can see Friday Saturday weather forecast upper right. It doesn't get any hotter than this in Texas!

Last weekend while teaching in Fredericksburg, I gave an "assignment" at one of the locations. We were at the Living History Farm at the LBJ Ranch National Historic Park. This is a real working homestead where they have real pioneers (I met a pioneer woman on "duty" named "Virginia"...great name!) who tend the gardens, milk the cows, cook on open fires and all that. The whole place was full of chickens as well as a few of each of every kind of farm animal. The assignment was to sketch (with paint) as many animals as possible. I went around checking on the artists and made a few sketches, too....chicks!
