Windy December by Kay Wyne

Windy December
8" x 10" Oil on RayMar Cotton Panel
En Plein Air Palette Knife Painting
This is probably one of my favorite plein air paintings.  I have so many paintings that I started outside, but was unable to finish.  I stuck it out on this one, even though it was a very cold and windy December day at White Rock Lake.  I like the feel of the painting...kind of moody, and because I used the palette knife, there was a lot of scraping and modeling of the oils.  This painting is available, and looks great in a dark mahogany wood frame with a gold inside liner.  Contact Kay for more information.  Thanks, Kay

Windy December by Kay Wyne

Windy December
8" x 10" Oil on RayMar Cotton Panel
Landscape Plein Air
As I post this today the wind is howling and makes me feel as I did the day I painted this small painting.  It was a cold and windy day at White Rock Lake.  As you can imagine, it was hard keeping all of my painting equipment together.  I started with a brush, but ended up painting with a palette knife.  I was painting with a Monday morning plein air group.  Outdoor situations make you paint fast and deliberate.  I probably need to get out of the studio and paint outdoors more in 2015.  This painting is for sale....contact Kay if you have comments or questions.  Thanks for looking....Kay

White Rock Lake Boats by Kay Wyne

White Rock Lake Boats
16" x 20" Oil on RayMar Cotton Panel
This painting is the first in a series of landscapes.  I am starting the Leslie Saeta 30 Paintings in 30 Days Challenge and it begins on September 1st!  I decided to paint landscapes so that I would have a theme and I have some wonderful places to go and paint in Dallas.  I used lots of juicy oils in this painting, and wanted it to be loose and colorful.  More tomorrow....join me and about 300 other artists painting for Leslie's challenge...it is fun and helps you paint everyday.  Thanks for viewing....KMW

Windy December by Kay Wyne

Windy December

8" x 10" Oil on RayMar Cotton Panel

En Plein Air
Yesterday was a beautiful December Monday at White Rock Lake.  I was with the Tutti group painting.  I started this 8" x 10" with two brushes, a filbert and a flat.  My vision for this painting was to nail down the colors of this beautiful fall day.  There were so many natural golds and greens and oranges in the landscape, but soon my attention went from the colors to the WIND.  It was so windy, which forced me to work quickly.  I know that the wind contributed some flecks of texture (dirt and bugs).  I pulled out my trusty #24 palette knife and started scraping and moving the paint around, making the hard edges go away and blending the oils.  Here is my finished painting, Windy December.

In this photo you can see my set-up at the lake.  My guerrilla box stood up against the wind that was whipping around us.  I used a limited palette - six colors and white - which makes it so much easier to paint quickly.  Thanks for viewing.  I start the large commission today, so my time will be focused on that project for the upcoming weeks.  Kay at kay@kwyne.com.

Plein Air Painting at White Rock Lake

5" x 7" textured oil painting, White Rock Lake, by Niki Gulley

Dallas Plein Air Painting Workshop with Niki Gulley
Day 2 - Afternoon Location:  Sunset Bay, White Rock Lake

In the afternoon at White Rock Lake, we switched locations to find better light on our subjects. Everyone was drawn to this peaceful bay and the vibrant fall colors. Even though every painter basically sketched the same scene, it was fun seeing each artist's individual style come thorugh. With just a short amount of time left at the end of the day, I quickly captured the lake, shoreline and autumn foliage with a palette knife and my leftover paint before starting our critique.

A perfect ending to our plein air painting workshop at the Dallas Arboretum and White Rock Lake – sharing our work from each day with new friends after a gorgeous weekend of painting outside. Thanks guys!

Painting at White Rock Lake with Niki Gulley

9" x 12" oil painting, White Rock Lake, by Niki Gulley

Dallas Plein Air Painting Workshop with Niki Gulley
Day 2 - Morning Location: White Rock Lake

On the second day of our plein-air painting workshop, we enjoyed a beautiful morning at White Rock Lake. Focusing on capturing water and the morning light, each painter picked a different vantage point, some choosing only natural subjects and others depicting sailboats on the horizon. I chose to paint these colorful boats largely for their vibrant colors and I liked how the line of the pier leads your eye back to the docked vessels. With a gentle breeze, the water had a little movement and shimmer to it that I suggested along with the vibrant foliage in this peaceful inlet. A perfect autumn morning!

Cottonwood Art Festival this weekend

“Bridge to Tomorrow,” White Rock Lake ©2011 Niki Gulley
12” x 24” textured oil on canvas

White Rock Lake sparkles in the evening sunset encompassed by the dark silhouette of the downtown Dallas skyline and the cresting bridge that carries cyclists around the lake's bike trail. Forefront dense shrubs, pampas grasses and trees frame the image and hold it in a mirror reflection of the bridge – an intriguing and complex composition that is designed to move you, the viewer, into the painting and carry your eye around this picturesque view of Dallas's cherished White Rock Lake. Rich with texture, thick palette knife strokes build lights and shadows; selecting saturated colors to suggest hope and optimism about upcoming days and using mysterious darks to define the lush foliage and offset the lowering sun.

To see this painting of downtown Dallas and more of Niki Gulley’s textured palette knife oil paintings in person, please stop by her booth at the Cottonwood Art Festival this weekend.

Sunday May 8 from 9 am to 6 pm.

Downtown Dallas from White Rock Lake by Susan Moss

Oil on canvas
16" x 20"

sold

This is a view of White Rock Lake from the end of my street. I live on the Peninsula in Dallas, Texas, a quarky little neighborhood with a killer view of the lake. Most people who move in here never leave. The field at the end of my street houses many jack rabbits, ducks and even coyotes. In the spring, if the City doesn't mow, we get an awesome showing of wildflowers.

Sunburst, White Rock Lake

"Sunburst, White Rock Lake" ©2009 Niki Gulley
pastel • 8" x 10"

I wanted to depict a different vantage point of White Rock Lake and I was intrigued by how my camera captured the sunlight peering through the clouds. It almost looks like a beam of light is shining down from heaven! So, I decided to go ahead and paint it that way to suggest an aura of mystery in the scene.

Impressions II, White Rock Lake

"Impressions II, White Rock Lake" ©2009 Niki Gulley
5" x 7" pastel

Today I revisited the same location at White Rock Lake as earlier in the week, but I wanted to paint it completely different this time. I love vibrant color and playing with contrasts in my subject, so today I really had fun. Hope you do, too!
