Day 7 ~ Against the Sky White Poppies and an Art Winner Announced by Nancy Medina

Against the Sky White Poppies
by Nancy Medina
12X12
Palette Knife/Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas

Against the Sky White Poppies is the newest daily painting in Flower Mound Studio, and painting number 7 in the 30 Paintings in 30 Days Challenge brainstormed, created and led by the talented Leslie Saeta. It's been a super busy day, I finished up a big ole (that's a technical term) container garden painting, packed up a few boxes to ship to Tennessee for my upcoming workshop, and managed to obey the Studio Director on at least three occasions with trips outside to throw the toy du jour for her majesty.

Without further ado (how does one spell ado?) the winner of my first artwork giveaway during the 30 in 30 Challenge month is  Donna Dale Abbott! Congrats Miss Donna! Everyone toss some confetti for Donna and give her a big cheer. And don't despair if you didn't win, remember, there are four more works of art I'll be giving away between now and October!

Celebrate Today ~ Red Poppy Torn Paper Collage by Floral Artist Nancy Medina

Celebrate Today ~ Red Poppy
by Nancy Medina
Mixed Media, Torn Paper Collage
11X14

.
Celebrate Today, Red Poppy, is the newest artwork in Flower Mound Studio this week. One big ole mess on the table, one new poppy collage complete! I have been collaging in my head every day since taking a torn paper collage workshop from the master multimedia artist, Nancy Standlee, recently. I see a bird, I think of it as a collage. I see an apple, I'm tearing up magazines in my imagination and gluing that little apple into abstract shapes. Even my puggies have been subjected to the idea of pet portraiture in paper. (They are refusing to make eye contact...) There's nothing quite like having a new obsession to keep your creative muses humming!

Ask me how many times I tipped the glue pot...

11X14
Oil on Museum Quality Linen Panel

Unfurled, Red Poppies, is the newest set of blossoms in Flower Mound Studio today, while a pile of pugs sleep soundly on a pillow nearby, rattling the windows with their snores. I have no idea how I would get a thing done without them! I'm delighted to be the spotlighted artist for the Daily Paintworks Blog this week. Wind Blown Poppy Landscape and a Tennessee Workshop by Texas Flower Artist Nancy Medina

Wind Blown Poppies by Nancy Medina
30X40
Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas

Wind Blown Poppies is taking up a big spot in the studio, this evening the sudden and inexplicable urge to paint a big 'ole poppy landscape took hold. I think I needed a nice path to step into and escape the busy pace of my life lately. This painting is based on a place in Utah that is a little bit of heaven on earth, not only for its beauty, but for the dear friend who lives there. I may not be there physically, but I am there in spirit!  Speaking of traveling to see friends, my Tennessee workshop September 21-23 is almost full, so I hope you'll join me there! Put a little joy in your brush and let's get together and paint fast and loose and make color happen! Read more....

You are Invited!

Wild Watermelon Poppy by Nancy Medina

Wild Watermelon Poppy by Nancy Medina

Wild Watermelon Poppy is drying on the vine in Flower Mound Studio this evening, as I have taken a bit of a break from my rose journey to paint a series of poppies. I'm developing some new works to take down to the Good Art Company Gallery in Fredericksburg, Texas soon, but in the meantime I got some good news this week. My award-winning painting, From the Heart Sunflowers, has been nominated for the Irving Art Association calendar. I received word a few days ago, and have been on cloud nine ever since! This is a big honor, and I can't wait to see the finished product. Stay tuned, I'll let you know when it's available - there are some amazing artists from the IAA group so this will be a real collector's item.

I can't help but smile when I see poppies, and I love painting them! In this study, I'm playing with 1/4 inch thick paint as you can see in the second photo above.

These wonderful oriental poppies were a site for my southern eyes when I visited the Chicago area last month! Gardens were alive with movement as these tall and stately beauties with their delicate petals danced on the wind and I couldn't help but paint them when I returned to the heat of Texas. Pompous Poppy

Pompous Poppy
From a single white poppy photo, this watercolor is probably my favorite, having it in a big show in Dallas and a smaller show closer to home. It is 22x15 on Arches cold press, done wet in wet a few years back. It won a point for me with SWS. Copyright Kay Smith 2009.

To inquire about owning this painting email me at 1971ks@att.net or to see more works visit my personal website at www.kaysmithbrushworks.us
