Surprise

Surprise
16" x 20" Oil on RayMar Cotton Panel
Contemporary Floral Still Life
I was painting away in the studio one day last week, when one of my studio mates bought me some peonies from Trader Joe's.  What a nice surprise.  They were stunning.  I had to paint them, and here's my results.  Below are a couple of photos of the set-up and the painting in progress.

Thanks for looking at my blog...if you are interested in this painting, or have any comments, please feel free to contact me.  This painting will be framed up after it dries.  Kay

Peonies, Please by Kay Wyne

Peonies, Please
24" x 24" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Still Life Painting
"Peonies, Please" is now completed!  The beautiful white ceramic vase were provided by one of our studio mates, Robin, and the tablecloths were contributed by Sharon.  The vase alone was fun and pretty.  The arrangement of peonies were absolutely beautiful with stunning colors and beautifully shaped petals. I worked on this painting for a couple of days with the fresh flowers.  After getting called away from the studio, the flowers were long gone when I returned a couple of weeks later, so I worked from memory, and found a photograph to use as reference.

When glancing at the arrangement, at first glance the peonies were pink.  But if you really studied them, they were magenta, pink, red, coral and shades of white.  Every petal was different and interesting.  I used a #20 Bright Monarch on the whole painting....it was a birthday gift from Sharon, so I felt like I couldn't go wrong with such a great brush in hand!  This contemporary still life is very painterly...you can see the brush strokes if you get up close to the canvas.

This painting was a challenge between several artists, and it will be interesting to see what everyone created.  This painting is drying at the studio, and is available for purchase.  Contact ME for purchasing info.  Thanks for looking at my blog...Kay

What better models to have in the studio on grey winter days than some beautiful peonies. They moved in the vase like they all wanted to dance.

Thanksgiving is a most favorite holiday in Flower Mound Studio, if one were to take a vote from the residents. It's only logical, considering the humans are outnumbered by the Pugs at the Polls, and Pugs consider eating a national sport.

I've created a little step by step tutorial for you showing how Butterfly Rest Stop came to bloom. I always begin my paintings with clean, transparent colors - read more...

Peonies, Fruit and Fabric by Kay Wyne

Peonies, Fruit, and Fabric
24" x 30" Oil on Canvas Panel
Contemporary Still Life Painting
I loved painting these peonies.  They were big and full, loose and colorful.  The background, apples and ceramic pitcher were more challenging than the flowers.  I was using a some new paints...Classic Oils, which I found to be very juicy and I liked the way I could move the paint around on the canvas.  It wasn't thick and gummy, it had the consistency of sour cream.  Concentrating on the shadows and the reflections, I was painting this still life in the Sahli Studio in Evergreen, Colorado.  Don is a wonderful artist and had some interesting set-ups in the studio.  Contact Kay for purchasing info.  This painting is framed in a dark moulding with gold lip.  Thanks for looking....Kay

Step by Step Peonies and Seven Days of Giveaways - Nancy Medina Art Classes and Videos

Peony Colored Glasses
by Nancy Medina

Oil on Deep Gallery Wrap Canvas

In exactly seven days, I'll be heading back to France! With students joining me from Australia, Canada, and across the US, I predict there will be plenty of painting, shopping and eating. I can hardly wait for gelato and croissants and all the yummy dishes Chef will prepare. I'm not a bit concerned about weight gain, after all, the more you weigh, the harder you are to kidnap! To celebrate, I'm giving away an original painting every day this week on my Facebook fan page. This is my biggest giveaway ever, and I want to send a painting to you, so be sure to enter to win!
This evening I'm working the late shift in the Flower Factory. The only staff member helping is AnnieBee, and since she is using my foot as her pillow while she dreams (and snores!), it looks like I will be sitting here for just a bit longer. I'll use that time wisely by sharing Peony Colored Glasses with you step by step ~ Enjoy! Click here for peonies created step by step.

Shy Plums and Pink Peonies - Nancy Medina Art Classes and Workshops

Shy Plums and Pink Peonies

I made an executive decision to leave the banana out of my class demo in Hot Springs, Arkansas, this morning. It was a tough call, but one of the plums kept rolling behind the vase out of the spotlight and I didn't want to spook the rest of the fruit herd and cause a stampede. Read more...

Close to Heaven Peonies and a New Texas Workshop - Flower Painting Classes by Nancy Medina Art

Close to Heaven Pink Peonies
by Nancy Medina
14X14
Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas

Close to Heaven Pink Peonies is based on the blossoms that took their sweet time opening this week. I finally put my fresh peonies in the fridge, and had forgotten about them until tonight, when we ran out of creme and I was searching about. Something tells me I'll be painting them again soon, unless, of course, they get lost behind the orange juice.

I'm delighted to announce my new Texas workshop, July 10-12, designed especially for the traveling student. The hotel picks you up at the airport, and takes you to class each day. I know I've spent many a moment chewing my nails over how to get to and from a class in a strange city before, and I'm tickled to provide a more convenient option. We'll be painting florals and landscapes, and I hope to see you there, blossom friends!

Spring Rain Peony and Hydrangea Garden is my newest large container garden, unveiled at my art event at Wine Down Market in Flower Mound Saturday. I'm humbled and honored at such a great turnout for the show! Thanks so much to everyone who joined me, and congratulations to Kay McCarthy who won a fun and squishable peony pillow. All the proceeds for the pillow giveaway went to one of my favorite charities, Dallas Ft Worth Pug Rescue. There were several quite good looking puggies who joined us for the event, four footed snuffly little ambassadors to the cause. I'll be having another art show at Wine Down Market again this year, right in time for holiday shopping, I sure hope you can join me there! Visit my bloggy to see pictures of art and pugs, what a perfect mix!

Ballet Slipper Pink Peonies is the newest painting in Flower Mound Studio, based on the fresh flower models who kindly stayed up late with the artist with little or no complaint. It was a beautiful day in my garden, my oak leaf hydrangea is in its glory after weeks of rain. I was able to catch a few rays this afternoon, between clouds, and noticed after a few moments I was sharing my chair with George the tree lizard. Actually, I am quite sure he was George the XIII, since he was a rather spry youngster compared to his George the Lizard cousins hanging out on the gate puffing their little chins at one another. I hope your day included a few moments of blissful contemplation (aka napping) in a sunny garden!

When we were young, my Mother would go into the piano room and play Fur Elise while we did our homework. Sometimes she played for hours. At times she labored through the notes and, at other times, the music seemed to flow from her fingertips. Today when my sisters and I met at the farm, it was the first day I was there when my Mother's home no longer was filled with her presence.  Read more...

Reading to My Mother the Poet - By Nancy Medina Art

Pink Halos Peonies -
Cover Art ~ Pandora's Box
by Nancy Medina

Tonight I read to my Mother from her own book of published poems. As I read, I glanced at her from time to time in her hospital bed. She lay with her eyes bright and alert. As I finished each poem she had written, I would meet her eyes briefly and she would meet mine, with a bit of a smile shared between us.

As I read to her, it occurred to me, my reading voice has the same inflection my Mother's voice had when she read to us as children. Because her hands can no longer grip properly, I held the book upright for her, showing her each poem and the painting I had chosen to go with it.

When I finished the last poem, the one she had written about her father, I said to Mom, "The end." She turned to me with a smile and said, "That was good."

And it was. It was very good.

One More Day Pink Peonies was the result of another good day at the flower market, I found fresh peonies out of season! Only two in the bundle really held up well overnight, so I painted them here, as a tribute to their perseverance under the bright studio lights. My Pug-mobile will soon be filled with supplies for my next workshop in the Texas Hill Country. I am planning to make a strategic stop at the fresh kolache bakery one morning, to indulge just a bit! Hopefully there will be at least a few left in the box by the time I make it to class, but I can't make any promises or anything...!

Life's a Breeze Peonies is the newest painting in Flower Mound Studio. Since the day was chilly and slightly wet out, the pugs stayed in the studio with me all day, hunkered down as if they lived in the Alaskan tundra. I love these cozy days in the studio, with all my office helpers snoring and tossing toys around while I work. I used one of my favorite recipes for pink in creating Lifes a Breeze, and here's how you mix it. Read more...

Holiday Cheer Peonies and the Thankfulness Checklist - Flower Paintings by Nancy Medina

Holiday Cheer Peonies

Holiday Cheer Peonies is the daily newbie in Flower Mound Studio, and the countdown to Christmas has begun. This was one of those perfect days, picking up goodies for my French holiday workshop in North Texas - all in French themes, coming home to a studio filled with the smell of fresh peonies, and spending an entire day with the hubby. I've got videos and paintings shipping all over the world tomorrow, and several surprise packages in the bunch for artists whom I suspect were awfully good this year! The next few weeks will go by so very quickly. When I think of the things I am most thankful for, each of them revolves around the same theme - Love. I am thankful for my family, my puggies, my job as an artist and teacher. Thanks so much to all my art friends and the students who give me so much happiness and joy. Here's to you - to a beautiful year, filled with flowers, color, art, and hot mocha with scandalous amounts of whippy creme! And a little critter or three to snuggle with!

Breaking Down the Essentials of the Flower and Peony Hearts - Paintings by Nancy Medina

Peony Hearts by Nancy Medina
12X12
Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas

Peony Hearts is the newest painting in Flower Mound Studio. One of the best ways to break down the essential bone structure of a flower is to deconstruct the flower, and working from life with an excellent light source is the quickest way to find that perfect balance between reality and impressionism. There are lots of great ways to migrate away from the old method of painting super-realistically. Squinting, of course, is one way. I asked my eye doctor last month during my annual exam if squinting four to five hours a day while painting would ruin my eyesight. She laughed and told me I had absolutely nothing to worry about. But then, what did she know. She's 22 years old...!

I do not paint petals, leaves, or stems. I paint shapes. Read more....

Petite Garden Pink Peonies was one of my new peony paintings in Flower Mound Studio today. The clock is still ticking, and if I hold my breath and no one sneezes, the delicate fresh peonies may last another day or 2! I didn't brave the shopping crowds today, and the puggies were quite happy for me to stay home at their beck and call. The only time I ventured out was this morning with the hubby for a brisk 3 mile walk. It was windy and the trees were turning and the leaves were like sparkling bits of gold falling all around us. Pink Zone Peonies is the daily newbie in Flower Mound Studio, celebrating the Day 3 of the fresh peony extravaganza bonanza, as well as a day of feasting and thanks. I hope your holiday was beautiful, filled with loved ones, comfort, laughter, and, even some little four footed snugglers. Right now I have one little puggy girl snoozing with her chin on my foot, and another in my lap resting her chin on my wrist. The important thing is, the pugs are happy! I'm happy too - I love painting peonies, they are so frilly and unkempt. Even their leaves are quite a tangle, reminding me of the old adage, every crooked line can use a bend in it! Happy Thanksgiving to you flower friends, may your pumpkin pie have extravagant portions of home made whippy creme on it!
