On a visit to New Mexico, we were greeted to cheerful wildflowers blossoming, adding pops of joy and sunshine to the desert scenery. Repeating patterns and waves of color create a harmony within the painting, while rendering the blooms and their surroundings abstractly plays with taking a traditional subject matter and showing it in a contemporary way.

Contemporary Still Life Painting

As with most of my paintings, this one went through several phases.  I started with three layers of transparent color, painting chaos and just getting the canvas covered.  I like the indigo, so I started drawing a boat, but it quickly turned into stripes and then an abstract floral.  There is a companion canvas.....which was meant to be a diptych.  But the composition wasn't working out for a 36" x 72" format.  If you look closely you can see the drips, the lines, the layers of color.  This painting is drying in the studio---I might need to add a few touches of darks on the petals.  The sides of the gallery wrap canvas are painted a dark Vulcan Grey.  Framing is not necessary.  Contact Kay Wyne for more information.

I picked up a couple of bunches of hydrangeas at Trader Joe's this week and set up a simple still life.  We were hosting Karen Blair - contemporary artist from Virginia, at the studio and this floral arrangement came in handy, as almost all the artists painted it.  I chose not to use any medium on this painting because I wanted a thick painterly look on the canvas.  It will take a long time for the oils to dry!  Here is a close-up:

I just finished this painting in the studio yesterday.  I had started it months ago, and put it away for a while.  I was in the mood to put some finishing touches on it, sign it and photograph it.  I love the shape and color of the vase, and the variety of shapes and colors in the floral arrangement.  It's very abstract...it's obvious that I used a flat brush by the strokes of paint on the canvas.  I pulled the arrangement out of my head, using my imagination and had a good time painting this one, even though it took a while to complete the job!  I hope this painting makes you smile.  Thanks for looking at my art....Kay

"Tears of Joy" didn't happen overnight.  I had originally painted a landscape with aspens on the canvas in a thin wash.  Not satisfied with the colorful landscape, I mixed a muddy pinky-beige color and started all over.  I loosely painted a vase and long stemmed roses, making it abstract.  After looking at it for a couple of months, I put a few more touches on it with thinned-down paint, letting the paint run down the canvas. I have suggested a vase filled with water and flowers, letting the viewer's eye fill in the negative space.  I limited the colors to pinks, corals and greens.  Framing is optional-all four sides of the canvas are painted.  Here is a close-up of one of the flowers.

I thought that the drips on the canvas looked like tears....but not sad tears.  "Tears of Joy" is looking for a new home!  The contemporary still life painting would make a lovely statement in a bedroom or bathroom.  Contact Kay for purchasing info.  Thanks for looking!  Kay

Today is Day #29 in the 30/30 Paint Challenge

I just pulled this canvas off my easel in the studio.  It is abstract, colorful and has thick brushstrokes of paint.  I have a new "thing" with this still life series...I put a "halo" in the composition...actually I decided to go with five of them.  I scratch paint off with a tool, then go in and put a color representing a pedal or part of the arrangement falling off.  I have put in two colors for each halo.  There are five halos in this painting.  The floral arrangement is busy and whimsical...giving this piece a fun and happy feel.  The edges of this canvas are painted, so framing is not necessary.  Contact Kay for more information on "Looking Forward to Tomorrow".  Thanks, Kay

Sometimes you have to paint just for the sake of painting...and that is what this little still life is all about, "I See Dots".  It is cute, colorful and looks great on a little easel.  It is so small that I had to search for some tiny brushes.  There is plenty of paint on here, so it needs to dry in the studio before I varnish and find a new home for it.  Thanks for looking at this blog....Have a great day.  Kay

Today at the studio was good.  I had painted a still life of John's fresh-cut mini roses....they were beautiful with corals, oranges, pinkie pinks, and fresh green leaves.  I thought I had a good start, but scrapped it after looking at it today.  I started over, and this is where I am on the painting.  I am pushing the oils around on the panel.  Needs more darks, more lights, and a few minor adjustments. This small painting was completed in the studio yesterday.  I need to sign it and let dry before framing it up.  I had lots of great colors on my palette, and loved playing with the roses, reds, corals, violets and greys.  My intention was to get the palette knife out, but stuck with my flat brush.    I mixed and mixed my colors for this painting, but was careful not to mix them on the canvas, just  putting the paint down, and not going back into it, making each stroke count.   Contact Kay for more info on this small floral arrangement.  Thanks, Kay
