Recently, we visited Santa Fe and to escape the heat we ventured up the Santo de Cristo mountains to cool down among the beautiful, refreshing aspen trees. I was attracted to this grove in particular with their beautiful textured white bark and their proximity and angles to each other. I decided to include the sentinels behind, also, to give you a sense of being surrounded by the peaceful forest. Dappled light casts diagonal shadows and causes the grasses to dance and sparkle. I hope you can feel the serenity of this rejuvenating place.

Just Sold! Recently, we visited Santa Fe and to escape the heat we ventured up the Santo de Cristo mountains to cool down amongst the beautiful, refreshing aspen trees. I was attracted to this grouping of trunks in particular with their beautiful textured white bark and their proximity and angles to each other. Their verticality offset by the horizontal logs on the ground made for an interesting composition. On this piece, I decided to pull in tight on the trunks, really focusing on the peeling bark and gnarled knots. I chose to include just a sliver of the sentinels behind to give you a sense of being surrounded by the peaceful forest and accentuating the rhythm in the upright trunks. Pops of red add to the joy and energy of the moment. I hope you, too, can feel the serenity of this rejuvenating place.

Recently, we visited Santa Fe and to escape the heat we ventured up the Santo de Cristo mountains to cool down amongst the beautiful, refreshing aspen trees. I was drawn to this meandering path leading through the aspens with its dappled light creating such gorgeous shadows. Having fun capturing all of the different textures with palette knife from the lush grasses to the feathery wildflowers to the peeling bark on the aspen trees, I set out to recreate the peace and beauty of this forest. I hope you, too, can feel the serenity of this rejuvenating place and enjoy an uplifting walk in the woods.

Aspens in the Valley was done in Pagosa  Springs, Co and what a time we had.  The aspens were so bright  yellow and some vivid greens. The trunks were shouting.. I loved painting and the company we had.. The painting measures 9"x12" and is signed and will have a frame.

Aspen Lane Red Poppies is painting number eight in the 30 Paintings in 30 Days Challenge sponsored by the talented Leslie Saeta! I'm already sweating bullets, wondering how I'll manage to get a painting done tomorrow, since I have an art club meeting tomorrow night and an art donation delivery tomorrow during the day. Where there's a will, there's a way. I'll just have to have an extra donut to fuel me through.... In the meantime, a four-foot aspen commission is beginning to take shape in the studio. Here's the upper quadrant. When you've got a painting this big, do you start at the bottom or the top? I really had to give that some thought!

Day 2, afternoon location - Aspen Trail

On day 2 of our Santa Fe Art Trek, the temperature started rising in the afternoon, so we headed up into the mountains for cooler breezes to paint the beautiful aspen trees. We were attracted to the brilliant white trunks with their unique peeling bark and dark protruding knots. I liked how the soft dappled light came through the trees and illuminated the path, leading into the distance. Becoming totally lost in the moment, we set out to capture the peacefulness and contentment we felt that afternoon.

"Aqua Dreams," New textured oil painting by Niki Gulley

When we arrived at this tranquil spot, the early morning light was very cool in color, but as the sun began to rise from the horizon, it shone this beautiful warm light that shimmered on the water’s surface and cast its hope of what was to come from the brand new day. I remember the peacefulness I felt in that moment, and a sense that anything was possible. In Aqua Dreams, by showing the contrast in the cool aqua/blues in the foreground waters against the warm golden glow on the distant pond’s edge, I wanted to share that feeling of hope and promise communicated by nature.

You walk down a path sheltered by autumn drenched trees, intrigued by the light flowing through the leaves and branches, casting shadows, colors changing with each gentle breeze, sunlight cascading down your pathway. Peaceful, tranquil, this painting flows around the canvas capturing the memory of autumn: lush crisp colors, crunchy leaves and a walk through the woods Walt Whitman would have envied.

Morning Aspens by Kay Wyne

Morning Aspens

This painting is finished and hanging in our home to dry. When I started this painting, I had three things going on in my head about the direction that I wanted to take. I wanted to use my brush, not the palette knife. I made a decision to put green in the painting, even though it is my least favorite color and I have issues with it when I paint. I wanted to experiment with transparent colors. So, keeping these three things in my mind, I set out to paint this colorful and contemporary abstract aspen painting. Getting the paints to blend and progress from one color to another was easy with the brush. I used some new wide, flat brushes. I did not want texture and thick paint. I was able to limit the green by putting the green in first, and letting it sit...I did not go back in and rework any of the green after the initial application. I did use the palette knife on the tree trunks, but did a lot of scraping-not leaving huge amounts of paint on the canvas. I was pleased with the outcome of this painting, and like the way the colors are bouncing around. I hope that you find this painting pleasing to the eye. Thanks for viewing this blog and my art. Rocky Mountain Aspens

I like pushing color to its limits, so in this Colorado painting I wanted to capture the dramatic glow from the sun setting and reflecting on the fall aspens in contrast to the deep blues of the distant Rockies.
