Abstract Flowers by artist Pat Meyer

When starting the demo for class the students requested that I approach this painting in a abstract manner.  Yippee something different.  The same thought process goes into an abstract painting. The direction of light the shadow planes and of course drawing is still involved.

This 30 minute demo was to help artist see that you can capture an expression of the subject matter by just looking at what the subject is saying.  When sitting down to the easel I study the subject to seeing what it is telling  me.  Then I figure out placement, values, drawing etc.  Try setting a timer for 30 minutes and see what you can do in that short time.

Love and Rejection by artist Pat Meyer

This Valentine my sweetie gave me a dozen red roses.  Some of them open and some of them didn't.  That seems to be the way for roses nowadays from the store.  This was a 30 minute demo painting for a small group last week.  One rose reminded my of Love and the other one hanging it's head in rejection of opening.

What a fun day in my workshop yesterday.  The topic was working on focal points with abstract backgrounds.  All the artist did a great job on their paintings.  This was my demo in about 45 minutes.  Paint fast and teach all at the same time which is like a brain teaser for artist.

Demo Painting by artist Pat Meyer

One of the most common mistakes that beginning painters make is to include too many hard edges.  Maybe this is because we are often taught as children to “fill in all the colors”.   If you paint in this manner you are not seeing the world as an artist.
Sharp edges are compelling when combined with a polarity of values. In other words if you place a sharp edge where the light is very light and the dark is very dark you will certainly create and electrifying visual event in the painting.  But sharp edges must be kept to a minimum and used only with a clear pictorial purpose in mind.  A painting should be like a symphony with a crescendo.  Start off your painting by writing down a clear vision of where the hard edge will be placed and usually this is where you want to draw the viewers most attention.  Other areas can be broken color, softer edges and thinner paint to create your song.

The Bartlesville Art League was so kind to have me up for a two day color theory workshop.  This little 45 minute demo  shows how to use the color wheel and color charts.  A big thank you goes out to Dawn for collecting my art.
