It Is All About The Vase

9 x 12 oil on linen

Today I painted this for my demo for my class.  They requested that I make the vase the Queen of the party and the Sunflower the supporting cast and hopefully I got it right for them. The lovely aqua green vase is so fun to paint.

SOLD ~ Morning Sunnies ~ Sunflower and Delphinium Painting by Floral Artist Nancy Medina

Morning Sunnies
Sunflowers and Delphiniums
by Nancy Medina

SOLD

16X12
Oil on Archival Panel

Morning Sunnies is the newest daily painting in Flower Mound Studio. It's been a busy week, shipping paintings, running pug-related errands (special foods, medications, two new toys for her majesty, etc) and I had a very cool first - my first royalty check arrived! *sound of trumpets* It's not absolutely huge, but it is kind of cool knowing my work is out there, starting to reach markets around the world. Is this what they call passive income? I like the idea of that, don't you? I kind of picture myself sitting in a lounge chair with a glass of iced lemon aid, wearing a big hat and reading a Danielle Steele novel....! Actually, the first time I've sat down today was to write this blog post. It's true that when you own your own business, work never stops. Fortunately, I absolutely love my job!

Ragdoll Tulips and Sunflowers by Nancy Medina

Last summer, I received a beautiful bouquet of red ragdoll tulips and sunflowers, and could not wait to set them up for a photo shoot on my back porch. The pugs were available to supervise, ensuring that any fruit that rolled off of the table was hastily retrieved, though not always returned. The weather today is much like it was the day I took the photo on my blog that inspired this painting - sunny, a bit windy, and really beautiful outside.

Sunny Days Sunflower by Nancy Medina

Sunny Days Sunflower is drying on the easel as I reacquaint myself with my little studio this week. On Sunday my mother was rushed to emergency with pneumonia, and on Monday the doctor told us to call in the family, her prognosis was not good. The next day, my mother sat up in her hospital bed and asked for a chocolate malt, which was delivered promptly. She drank the whole thing and began talking about coming home. Yesterday the doctor said she is out of danger, much to his amazement. Thank you to everyone who sent positive thoughts and prayers our way. I have so much to be thankful for this year, most of all the chance to tell my mom how much I love her.

I hope you and your family have a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday!

Sunfire Sunflower is a new small work closing out another day of painting at Flower Mound Studio. I find sometimes after focusing for hours on a large project or commission, right before it's time to put the brushes away, there is one more little painting asking to come out. Sunfire was the last minute burst of color after hours of work on a magnolia I'm creating in cool sea greens and bright lavenders. The other side of the palette wanted a turn, it seems!

A Sunflower Painting Giveaway and Barefoot on the Farm

The Visitor - Sunflowers and Strawberries
12X12
Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas

I've had a love of flowers for as long as I can remember. I grew up on a farm in Scurry, Texas. My parents were organic gardeners back in the 70s, long before organic gardening was in style. In our vegetable garden, every fourth or fifth row was planted in sunflowers and marigolds to attract the insects off the crops. My love for nature began there, standing barefoot and gazing up at the 10-foot-tall sunflowers. Today, I grow sunflowers in my back yard garden in Flower Mound, along with many other blossoms. I am so inspired by color, it makes me happy, and it's a joy I love sharing on the canvas.

Shine Sunflowers and Pansies by Nancy Medina

Shine Sunflowers & Pansies

Shine Sunflowers and Pansies is the newest work in Flower Mound Studio, as the pansies outside are holding out against a chilly wind. I'm not sure how many more days my morning glories and pansies will be with me, so I'm attempting to capture them in oils this week, since these delicate beauties cannot be bought from the local grocery store in November. And in case you've been following my bloggy, yes I was good! I painted my rose today, and then wipe wipe wipe! Someday, there will be another rose...stick with me, I promise!

Smiles and Daisies is drying on the easel as I peruse the interesting classes being offered in Fredericksburg this winter. Shall I paint pet portraits? Learn to paint out of doors in frigid temps? Pay a model fee - wait, a model fee?? This is why I love flowers. They don't wiggle. They don't have to remove piercings before each sitting. The little daisies who posed for this painting were $2.50 a bundle at the Piggley Wiggley this afternoon. Give them a little water and they're happy. One of them even laid next to the paint, reclining beautifully upon command and sitting perfectly still for hours. Visit my blog to meet my lovely models. I do wish, though, they would last all winter!

Saving Grace Sunflowers by Nancy Medina

Saving Grace Sunflowers has been percolating in a state close to finished for over a month. I finished it today, brightening the shadows with a mixture of viridian and transparent oxide red, and then adding in some deep shadowed greenery into the wet background.

I wear a few hats, just so life stays interesting, and one of them is for pug rescue. A little pug in Southlake, Texas, escaped out an open gate 2 days ago. He had surgery a week ago, and his family was frantic all night searching for him. This morning, he was found safe and sound. This painting is a bit of a thank you note to the angels who brought Rocky home, to his family, where he belongs.

Sunflowers

8" x 10" oil painting by Niki Gulley

I set up a still life of sunflowers for my adult art class to paint last week and everyone's work turned out great! The flowers were beautiful and just the bit of sunshine we needed. Here is one of the studies I completed while demonstrating for the class. For more information about this piece or to find out about my next set of classes, e-mail me at Niki@NikiGulley.com or check out my website at NikiGulley.com.
