How to Punch Up Your Color - Green Meadow Lavender Farm - Flower and Landscape Paintings by Nancy Medina Art

Green Meadow Lavender Farms
by Nancy Medina
14X14
Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas

Green Meadow Lavender Farms is the newest daily painting in Flower Mound Studio, I warmed up the purple brushes and mixed up warms and cools into my piles, planting them right next to the greens. I have a little mantra I repeat even when I'm alone in my studio (yes, I am certifiably an artist as well as certifiable) that goes something like this - place the color next to but not on top of the other color. It helps me remember not to blend into oblivion and keeps those color punches powerful.

Slice of Live in a French Village and a Florida Workshop - Flower and Landscape Paintings by Nancy Medina

Detail ~ French Village Lavender and Sunflowers
by Nancy Medina
20X20
Oil on Deep Gallery Wrap Canvas

The brushes are all packed for sunny Florida - I'm not quite sure how my freezing toes will react when the arrive in the sunshine state tomorrow - I'm told it's a brisk 50-ish degrees there. I seem to remember 50 degrees, vaguely, but it's a distant memory right now in freezing Texas! I was finishing up edgework on my newest French Village scene, and thought it would be fun to cut some slices or vignettes out of the overall composition, making little mini-paintings. All that's missing are the fluffy little French sheep!

Here are a few different scenes - enjoy! Stay tuned for photos from my Florida workshop this week, I'll try not to bombard you with too many beach scenes, and if I drink anything out of a coconut, I promise to save some for you!

French Village Lavender and Sunflowers
by Nancy Medina
20X20
Oil on Deep Gallery Wrap Canvas

French Village Lavender and Sunflowers is the newest painting in Flower Mound Studio, as the pug helpers lay about. I believe they are on strike, although they cannot hold up signs. It's more of a snoring laying about kind of strike. They don't seem the least bit excited about my big news today - I'm teaching my first workshop in Arkansas and you are cordially invited! *confetti!!* I'll be teaching in Hot Springs, a place I've always wanted to visit. Even better, it will not be in winter when I'm there. Here's a bit more info below. In the meantime, I have to wake up my snoring helpers and tuck them into bed. Sweet dreams flower friends!

Sunset Vintage by Nancy Medina
14X14
Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas

Sunset Vintage is the daily rendering in Flower Mound Studio, I felt compelled to produce some icy blues and warm grape hues - you might think this is a creation based on some far away European countryside, but it is, in fact, a little vignette from a lavender farm in the Texas Hill Country. "Distant Dunes" - Thaw Malin iii

"Distant Dunes"

"Distant Dunes", this is a small painting, 6" x 8", oil on canvas panel.

Out of the breeze in a sunny location with Africa just over the far dunes (thousands of miles away), I studied one of my favorite trees. Its leaves, I thought, were brown, in reality were a dark shade of red. As the sun popped in and out between the clouds, the leaves turned on and off from illuminated red to a duller red/brown...

Dreams to Come - Thaw Malin iii

"Dreams To Come"

"Dreams to Come", this is a small painting, 6" x 8", oil on canvas panel.

To start this painting, I stopped here, because I liked the evening view. I set up to paint and the sky turned purple and the the lavender clouds streaked through. As I included them in the image, the moon added its presence and completed the scene along with the distant thunder of the waves. The beauty of painting outdoors always reveals itself in its unexpected splendor... ...

Cool Spring Waters - Thaw Malin iii

"Cool Spring Waters"

"Cool Spring Waters", this is a small painting, 6" x 8", oil on canvas panel.

A well wrapped bicyclist passed me as I worked at the edge of the pavement. She mumbled something about seeing the last of the snow clouds for the season. She could have been right as the breeze and the temperature had me working on all cylinders to keep up my body heat. Those clouds sure were purple as the sun slid over the horizon...

Lavender & Lime - Thaw Malin iii

"Lavender & Lime"

"Lavender & Lime", this is a small painting, 6" x 8", oil on canvas panel.

Try as I may, it has been difficult to do any paintings this past week as my Australian and American family converges on Mt. Martha, Victoria for my nephew's wedding tomorrow. I have had to find a quiet corner in the garden to do today's painting... (This painting and anymore I do between now and March 16th, should they be sold, will not be shipped until after March 18th. I will be painting in Australia most of that time visiting koalas, as well as attending a family wedding)...

Winter Eve - Thaw Malin iii

"Winter Eve"

"Winter Eve", this is a small painting, 6" x 8", oil on canvas panel.

I could not resist another field of Little Bluestem grass. This is a tree I love to paint in all seasons. It is near a mailbox which says "Old Hunt Place" and for lack of a better location name, call it just that. Every viewing is different as time and seasons change and weather moves in and out. Sometimes I walk away empty handed, yet still relishing the view... (This painting and anymore I do between now and March 16th, should they be sold, will not be shipped until after March 18th. I will be painting in Australia most of that time visiting penquins, as well as attending a family wedding)...

New Year's Marsh - Thaw Malin iii

"New Year's Marsh"

"New Year's Marsh", this is a small painting, 6" x 8", oil on canvas panel.

I continue to be fascinated by the marshlands here. Because of the private causeway which goes through the marsh, and is flooded at periods of high tide, at low tide I have direct access to the inner workings of this ecosystem. Otherwise I would be outfitted with hip boots or waders to get to the views available here. I am transfixed by the warm, golden sunset light on top of the grasses in contrast to the dark brooding edges of the waterways and the blues of sky and water reflections. Add to that the smokey blue/purple atmospheric haze of the distant shores and hills and the scenes dazzle the eye as the sun goes down...

"Tidal Pool"

"Tidal Pool"

"Tidal Pool", this is a small painting, 6" x 8", oil on canvas panel.

I found this pool as the tide went out. Started painting and within 20 minutes the pool was gone. Luckily I had sketched it in as I began. Thinking that it would disappear quickly, I was able to capture most of it before it was but a memory...

Snow Clouds - Thaw Malin iii

"Snow Clouds"

"Snow Clouds", this is a small painting, 6" x 8", oil on canvas panel.

I look forward to visiting this meadow marsh in the fall while the salt hay has its way with orange and gray. The hills roll on into the background, while this field is perfectly flat. Only a moon tide changes it when it becomes submerged a few times each month...

Bluebird Nest - Thaw Malin iii

"Bluebird Nest"

"Bluebird Nest", this is a small painting, 6" x 8", oil on canvas panel.

The streaming sunbeams of late afternoon, belied the coolness of the day. A hot coffee and gloves soon led me to know I had nothing to dread. Oh sorry, that's for another time...!

Ebb Tide - Thaw Malin iii

"Ebb Tide"

"Ebb Tide", this is a small painting, 6" x 8", oil on canvas panel.

When I chose this location, the view was less than stellar. The near shore had just gone into shadow with the tips of the grasses still in golden light. The far point had merly started its transition to this evening gold. The sky had yet to change out of its stiff, blue suit. I was intrigued by the exposed rock and seaweed left by the receding tide. (I admit to a half hearted search for arrow heads as I ambled back to my van for paints.) After I had set up against some bushes just out of reach of the breeze, the magic started. Two crows flew in to flip pebbles in their search for delicacies until my need to clean a brush sent them scowling off. A boy standing on a paddle board fluttered by... an elephant fell out of the sky... oh, sorry, wrong time line...
