"Cedar Tree Neck Barn" - Thaw Malin iii

"Cedar Tree Neck Barn"

"Cedar Tree Neck Barn", this is a small painting, 6" x 8", oil on canvas panel.

This barn and property have intrigued me for many years. An old barn with an ocean view behind it, how delightful. If it had not been raining and I was stuck painting inside my van, I never would have chosen this view. But I'm happy I did…

The value of this work of art is $550 USD, but, as my gift to you, for the 7 days of the auction each piece is in from the day it is created, you may start bidding at $100 (before the price becomes $550)… This is my way of saying thank you for enjoying my work and keeping me creating new ones almost everyday. Your interest stimulates and inspires me and has made me a better painter for it.

If think you'd like to purchase this piece, please click Go to my Auction, bidding starts at $100.00 USD.

"Filly In The Field" - Thaw Malin iii

"Filly In The Field"

"Filly In The Field", this is a small painting, 6" x 8", oil on canvas panel.

This white horse has been tempting me to paint it for many months. In the mid to late afternoon of a sunny day, its white coat is really illuminated against the darkness of the wood beyond. Today was the perfect time to capture the horse on canvas. Even the deer hunters draped in orange who crept out of the woods behind it could not spoil the scene. (I was positioned at the side of the road and knew they would not shoot in my direction)...

"Along The Way To Squibnocket" - Thaw Malin iii

"Along The Way To Squibnocket"

"Along The Way To Squibnocket", this is a small painting, 6" x 8", oil on canvas panel.

The glacier left Chilmark a roly-poly landscape full of kettle holes, drumlins and clay and rock. The boulders, rocks and erratics have been put to use as split granite fence posts, foundations and chimney stones. The most visible of all uses are the stonewalls. Some farmers would have fun in the winter months with sticks of dynamite. They would blow up the larger boulders to make more manageable for walls and jetties. Walls like this one, high on a hill, were made with spaces between the stones to accommodate the gales and keep the walls still standing. It also did not hurt that it cost few stones to make the walls. If you were a rabbit, raccoon, otter or muskrat you would also appreciate the porosity of these boundary markers…

"Lace Wall" - Thaw Malin iii

"Lace Wall"

"Lace Wall", this is a small painting, 6" x 8", oil on canvas panel.

In the evening, I walked into the woods in North Tisbury expecting to find ripe blueberry bushes. Instead I found grove after grove of beech trees surrounded by huckleberry bushes and oaks. Beeches are singularly different than other forest dwelling trees in that they send out a root system which subdues all other root systems. The result is that from one well established tree, a grove of many others soon circle around the first. Walking from a green forest floor, suddenly into a beach grove 60 to 100 feet tall is like walking into a huge green tent with an orangey/tan dried leaf floor and all the green leaves are where the cotton canvas of the tent would be. In this particular grove I discovered the starting point of a lace stonewall built 200 or 300 years ago. As stonewalls go, a lace wall is at once economical for the builders and friendly towards the wind and the smaller animals. The holes mean less stones required, less wind resistance, and free passage for bird and beast from one side to the other…

"South Side" - Thaw Malin iii

"South Side"

"South Side", this is a small painting, 6" x 8", oil on canvas panel.

I don't know what I was expecting to find when I went out to paint here. I was intrigued by the stonewall first. I came back to look a second time and saw the raking shadows beyond. That was all I needed…

"After The Hay" - Thaw Malin iii

"After The Hay"

"After The Hay", this is a small painting, 6" x 8", oil on canvas panel.

I painted 2 paintings the evening this field was baled into hay. The first was from about 100 feet away and posted here about 8 paintings ago. In this one the field breathes with its new freshly shorn look and the shadows rake neatly across it…

"Forest Fog" - Thaw Malin iii

"Forest Fog"

"Forest Fog", this is a small painting, 6" x 8", oil on canvas panel.

At a new location (for me), I followed a path which wandered through a swamp and over a small stream or two. Then this clearing appeared on slightly higher, dryer ground. Emerging from the closeness of the swampy shrubbery walls of the trail to the openness of this space, made me appreciate the larger view this afforded. The tree trunks were like umbrella poles with their developing canopies overhead. A fog lingered at the edge of view, maintaining a surreal quality to the place as a stonewall laced along the back...

Far Meadow - Thaw Malin iii

"Far Meadow"

"Far Meadow", this is a small painting, 6" x 8", oil on canvas panel.

I almost missed the color changes in these mash grasses, as they turn from green through orange and gold then brown and silver. Soon enough, beside sky and cloud, the cool blue water will remain the sole enchanting dancer in the land and sea of winterscape...

Snow Clouds - Thaw Malin iii

"Snow Clouds"

"Snow Clouds", this is a small painting, 6" x 8", oil on canvas panel.

I look forward to visiting this meadow marsh in the fall while the salt hay has its way with orange and gray. The hills roll on into the background, while this field is perfectly flat. Only a moon tide changes it when it becomes submerged a few times each month...

Bee Quiet - Thaw Malin iii

"Bee Quiet"

"Bee Quiet", this is a small painting, 6" x 8", oil on canvas panel.

I was wandering around by my friends' house on Tea Lane in some iffy humid weather. Back in the field near where the wild turkeys nest I discovered the abandoned bee hive. Looking like a bear had helped himself, the top enclosure was balanced on the brink of falling. It was a quiet evening's work until the turkeys started chiming/clucking in before roosting. Taking off from 25 feet below their favorite pine trees, as a friend said, they sounded like bowling balls attempting liftoff...

In The Shadows - Thaw Malin iii

"In The Shadows"

"In The Shadows", this is a small painting, 6" x 8", oil on canvas panel.

This was a quick sketch as the sun darted below the tree line, the field filled full of shadow and the cloud cover warmed from the setting sun. At that moment the cattle came up the field in front of me. This gave opportunity...

Morning Bright - Thaw Malin iii

"Morning Bright"

"Morning Bright", this is a Small painting, 6"x 8", oil on canvas panel.

Continuing with my daffodil obsession, I found this orange cup by a neighbor's stonewall. I couldn't paint it where it was or I would have been found run over by the side of the road. So I cut and brought it home to paint outside on the east porch (in a vase) with this actual wall and view behind it. Plein air, sort of, alla prima for sure...

Squibnocket Valley - Thaw Malin iii

"Squibnocket Valley"

"Squibnocket Valley" , this is a Small painting, 6"x 8", oil on canvas panel.

I discovered this view by accident a few evenings ago. It had been very windy with big surf all day. Wandering to a sheltered corner on this property, only visited once before, I came upon this wonderful landscape. If the water were not there, it would be a valley...

Day Lily Dancer - Thaw Malin iii

"Day Lily Dancer"

"Day Lily Dancer" , this is a Small painting, 6"x 8", oil on canvas panel

The day lilies are out in full force right now. Some flower beds are impossibly alive with many different varieties and riots of color. The best part for the painter is that a lot of the flowering is right in your face at eye level. No leaning over or sitting down to capture the best view...
