New Work and New Day by Judy Crowe

Texas Hay 9x12

New Work, New Day

Every day is a new day in the studio.  I am so glad to be back at work on a regular basis but I'm finding that I'm a bit more rusty than I had hoped.  Not all work is great, some just so so.  I haven't been posting regularly for that reason.  I'm so enjoying the process though and thankful for that.  I am starting to work on a series of paintings from a Provence trip I took several years ago.  I taught a workshop there and then stayed on to paint for about a week.  I'll be posting some of those soon I hope when I start getting something I am proud of.  I'm getting really picky!  This is a plein air painting that I did a couple of weeks ago in Independence Texas.

"Gloria" by Judy Crowe

'Gloria'  20x16 oil on linen (head study)

Hi Friends,
I attend a portrait group on Fridays in The Woodlands, Texas and Gloria was our model last week.  She had such an interesting face and she was so still.  It was fun painting her and I thought I'd share this study with you even though I didn't finish it.  Richard Schmid says in his book 'Alla Prima, Everything I know about painting' that  a painting should hold it's own even if you don't have the time to finish it.  (check out his website at www.richardschmid.com)

I was happy with her face for the most part, I mean to say, at this point in my study of faces and heads.  I'm really enjoying working on these character studies and I'm really learning a lot about drawing, edges, and color.
I've revamped my website, changed the color and added prices for all work.
Thanks for letting me share with you!

Head Study by Texas Artist Judy Crowe

Rhonda  14x11 oil on panel

This is a head study I did last Friday in the portrait session that I have been involved with at the Woodlands Art League.  It's a great opportunity to get with other artists and share ideas and to practice painting the face or figure.  This is not my forte' of course...I really want to get a lot better at painting portraits but I try and I learn as I am going.  This young woman's name is Rhonda and she did a great job sitting for us which is not an easy task.  I told Rhonda I would post it so that her mom and fiance' could see the painting. Rhonda thought it looked like her so I am happy that I was able to get a likeness but my main goal is to get a nice painting.   Now that I have posted it, I can see there are a couple of things I should do next time- for instance the shadow side of Rhonda's face should softened a bit I think.  Take care, happy Sunday and thanks for visiting my blog.

Poor Pooh....he's stuck in the honey pot again!
This was my children's book.  And I remember
when my mom took photos with that brownie
starlet camera which by the way is not the easiest
 thing to paint!

Easter Blessings by Judy Crowe

Easter Blessings by Judy Crowe
16x20 oil on linen panel

I usually don't paint this large outdoors but I decided this day I would try and was pretty happy that I did complete this 16x20 in one sitting. I think I will be doing this more often because it forces you to work quickly and to not be able to 'futz' with too many details. Is that a word?

It's beautiful this spring....this painting was done at The Antique Rose Emporium, Independence, Texas. Thanks for looking. If you are interested in purchasing, please email me.

PS. For anyone that lives in the Houston area, I will be at The Arbor Gate this weekend (Saturday, My 7) painting and selling some of my prints, small watercolor sketches (for next to nothing!) of Texas Wildflowers from 9 to 4. Lot's going on there this weekend. The Arbor Gate has a website www.arborgate.com It's located just west of FM 249 on FM 2920 in Tomball, Texas. It's so cute out there! Reminds me of the Antique Rose Emporium~

Brenham Sun by Judy A. Crowe

Brenham Sun 10x12 oil on linen panel
by Judy Crowe

I painted in Brenham Texas today and took tons of photos. It was cold and windy at first so didn't get started until about noon, but it warmed up and turned into a perfect day. I took over 180 photos today and plan to work on some larger landscape paintings in the studio for a day or two. The bluebonnets are out! Thank you for visiting!

"One Sunny Day" by Judy A. Crowe

"One Sunny Day" in Brenham
oil on linen panel
11x14

It was still pretty chilly and windy -but it was sunny~ which is more than I can say for the other days there. Oh well. The joy and adventures of painting outside! I hope next time this painting will have some wildflowers in it. Do you see the yellow weeds? :)

Fran's Party by Judy Crowe

"Fran's Party" by Judy A. Crowe
Last week I spent several days in Brenham Texas hoping to paint the wildflowers. Since we have had such a cold winter, the wildflowers were pretty much nonexistent. I am hoping to go back in a couple of weeks when the bluebonnets are out and hopefully the weather will cooperate a little better. The week was not lost though with a chance to catch up with good friends. There were quite a few members of the Outdoor Painter's Society there and we had a great time Saturday in LaNell Arndt's studio painting together. I feel so blessed to have such sweet friends. Fran Ellisor, Rose Hohenberger, Elaine Monnig, Kathrine Spena, Carrie Ballard, Peggy Kingsbury, LaNell Arndt, Bob Rohm, Dave Bates, Joe Collard, Caroline Ratcliff, Marchita Priest, just to name a few. I only came home with two paintings that are halfway decent but I painted and it was good.
