Three Is A Crowd by Kay Wyne

Three Is A Crowd
18" x 24" Oil on Canvas
Contemporary Oil Painting
I was in the mood for boats...and a #12 Filbert.  So I got my paints out and started sketching with the paint.  Here is a pic when I was laying the shapes out.  I had a photograph from last year's trip to Maine that I used for reference.

And then I started pushing the paint around.  I did not use any medium, so the paint is very thick.  The best part is that I painted pretty fast...I was able to work this painting in one session.

I kept layering the paint on.  I don't know why, but after I finished this painting, I immediately started a commission....another boat painting!  I can't post my progress on that one because it is a gift for someone, and I will have to wait until it is finished and shipped to Chicago.  Thanks for looking at my blog and the art posted here.  Contact me if you are interested in this painting....kay@kwyne.com.  Have a good day.....Kay

"Chappy Ferry" - Thaw Malin iii

"Chappy Ferry"

"Chappy Ferry", this is a small painting, 6" x 8", oil on canvas panel.

The weather was cold and windy for this painting. When I went out the next day to finish it was off and on rainy. Had to sit and paint from my car both days, but at least I was warm...

"Signs Of Fall" - Thaw Malin iii

"Signs Of Fall"

"Signs Of Fall", this is a small painting, 6" x 8", oil on canvas panel.

I almost missed this painting opportunity. I love the views in the fishing village of Menemsha. Concentrating on the boats in port and their respective docks and gear, I almost didn't see the colors of the far shore. It is full of a patch of rosa rugosa, locally known as beach rose. Usually a full, deep green color with red/pink or white roses, it opens its blooms early in spring. The scent, mixed with the aroma of the sea salty air, is a heady nose full of the summer to come. This particular stand had all turned a rusty yellow orange, stacked one atop the other marching up the hillside. On this bleak cold, almost snowy day, they were a welcome warming sight to behold...

"595 Boat"

"595 Boat", this is a small painting, 6" x 8", oil on canvas panel.

I was drawn toward the blue pond skiffs. However, a lot of other things seem to have come along with them…

"Summer's Over"

"Summer's Over", this is a small painting, 6" x 8", oil on canvas panel.

Some fishermens' shacks are shuttered for the season. Lobstermen begin to pull traps for the fall. Striped bass and bluefish are migrating past as the waters cool from summer's heat…

"Coming and Going" - Thaw Malin iii

"Coming And Going"

"Coming and Going", this is a small painting, 6" x 8", oil on canvas panel.

One ferryboat went by me before I got the hint that maybe they were my subject for the day. It was nice to have 2 tries to capture each one as they passed by in the shipping lanes every hour or so...

Edgartown Stakes - Thaw Malin iii

"Edgartown Stakes"

"Edgartown Stakes", this is a small painting, 6" x 8", oil on canvas panel.

This is the view to the north of the last painting I did, "Scallop Boat". It was a different evening light as well as different wind direction, and colder. With fewer boats left in harbor in winter, it is easier to see into the far corners compared to the madhouse of summer boating...

Scallop Boat - Thaw Malin iii

"Scallop Boat"

"Scallop Boat", this is a small painting, 6" x 8", oil on canvas panel.

I was in the lee of the wind with 45 mph gusts overhead and farther out from shore. It was not a day to be outside of my van painting however. Just as I was finishing, a thunderhead floated over the lighthouse to my left. It became orange on the sunset side of the anvil shape and deep purple on the eastern side. Moving too fast for me to try to paint it, I can only savor it in my memory...

In A Fog - Thaw Malin iii

"In A Fog"

"In A Fog", this is a small painting, 6" x 8", oil on canvas panel.

I came upon this scene one rainy, foggy day. The fog isolated the dory from what was usually a crowded background. That is what I like about fog. It can transport you from here to anywhere, by taking away all the local points of reference...

Going Going Gone by Judy Crowe

Going, Going, Gone! by Judy Crowe

Well Hi Everyone,  As the name of this post implies, I have been going, going, going.  Wow.  Time to stay home and get some things done here.  The following are studies that I have done on recent plein air trips.  What a great opportunity to be able to paint outside in the open air.  Whenever I look at these studies, I can remember the exact time of day, the way I felt, the smells, the sounds, the wonderful encounters with people and otherwise....(critters).  The top painting is the beautiful Louisiana bayou as was the last study of the marsh.  The middle study (not the greatest photo) was from the Teton Valley near a place called Moose Creek.  The weather that day could not decide on whether to be cloudy, rainy, or sunny so I stuck with the first thing I got when I set up to paint, cloudy with sprinkles.  I wore my friend Kathy's bear bells that day....and was on constant lookout for them.  They are everywhere.  There is some discussion between locals there whether the bear bells let the bears know you are there and to stay away from humanoids or whether they send the message...'hm there is a human around with backpack and food!'.  So I kept my eyes pealed.  :)  Next week I'll be working on 'tweaking' some of my other studies done last month and also I will start to post my small works to finish off my 50 / 50 project..just in time for Christmas.  Thanks as always for allowing me into your digital life via this blog!
As always, you can contact me via my website, or contact info on my website.  Thank you!!

Quitsa to Menemsha - Thaw Malin iii

"Quitsa To Menemsha"

"Quitsa to Menemsha", this is a small painting, 6" x 8", oil on canvas panel.

Sometimes it is nice to get up high for a long, distant view of the landscape. Color this fall is not as bright as other years. The vistas have a mellowness to them as they fade into the winter softness of lavenders and grays and tawny browns...

Collin's Beach - Thaw Malin iii

"Collin's Beach"

"Collin's Beach", this is a small painting, 6" x 8", oil on canvas panel.

I have worked on this for a few days. Each time I have gone there it has rained and I could only complete a small part of the whole. Luckily the light has pretty much been the same, and no one has wanted to go out in their boats. Today the sky opened just enough to show me its inner light...
