What was I saying about not getting enough blue? Today, my friend and talented artist, Sheri Jones, and I decided to paint another beautiful blue craftsman home as part of the "Paint Historic Waxahachie." But this time I wanted the emphasis on their gorgeous hollyhock garden! The flowers were such a beautiful shade of pale cream with the sun creating blush and golden accents. The homeowner was so welcoming and took such pride in her yard that I was really glad I chose this location, too. What a fun afternoon!

Continuing to "Paint Historic Waxahachie," that afternoon we only had a little time left to paint in the day, so we chose to capture this blue home and beautiful yuccas planted in front of it. After painting so much pink, now I couldn't get enough of painting blue! The contrast in the reds and azures were so fun and cheerful that I had to capture that uplifting pop of color.

Just sold! So, today I broke my earlier pattern in the "Paint Historic Waxahachie" contest and started painting blue. I just adored this azure blue craftsman home surrounded by its beautiful garden. The homeowner was so welcoming and took such pride in his yard, that I wanted to honor that in my painting. The rose trellis and dappled lit entry were so inviting, that I wanted to capture that feeling, almost like the setting was giving you a warm, welcoming hug.

Can you really get too much pink??? After painting my first blush Victorian home in Waxahachie the previous week, I just had to capture another one today. This 1800's beauty was decorated in pink, pink, and more pink! So whimsical and fun, I just had to feature these kitschy flamingos and all of the rosy glory surrounding them. 

For a brand new challenge this spring, I registered for Paint Historic Waxahachie, a plein air painting competition hosted in the town of Waxahachie about an hour south of Dallas. Basically, over the course of a few weeks, our assignment was to complete paintings on location anywhere in the city limits. Filled with beautiful historic homes, I was attracted to the detailed craftsmanship and architecture. Each homeowner had taken great care in decorating their porches and yards to create a warm welcome, and I wanted to capture that beauty and pride in my paintings.

For a brand new challenge this spring, I registered for Paint Historic Waxahachie, a plein air painting competition hosted in the town of Waxahachie about an hour south of Dallas. Filled with beautiful homes built in the late 1800s, I was attracted to the detailed craftsmanship and historic architecture. Each homeowner had taken great care in decorating their porches and yards to create a warm welcome, and I wanted to capture that beauty and pride in my paintings. 

Here you can see this beautiful pink Victorian surrounded by more beautiful rose and scarlet blooms. I loved the play of complimentary colors, even down to the green detailing and scrollwork on the house.

Just Delivered! My final request for 2022 was to create a special home portrait. I no longer advertise that I make these, but I am still happy to paint something special for my collectors or their referrals by request. So for this particular pastel, someone new reached out to me with the craziest 6-degrees-of-separation story! They had purchased a home in the M streets of Dallas and the previous home owner (who turned out to be one of my early collectors) had gifted and left them the home portrait I had created for her in 2004.

Fast forward to this year, and these home owners were ready to move into another place, so they wanted to pass on the gift again to the new people purchasing their home and leave my home portrait from 2004 with the house. So, of course when they moved into their new place (and no one had left a home portrait here), they asked me to create something special for their Christmas gift. So fun! I was even able to include their doggie in the window this time. I hope they enjoy the new memories, and a big thank you to both home owners from 2004 and 2022.

New "Winter Hues" Palette Knife Aspen Tree Painting by Contemporary Impressionist Niki Gulley

I painted these winter aspen trees with palette knife and extremely thick paint. I love how the chunky paint adds to the texture of the bark and the movement in the snow and branches. The painting continues around the edges of the wrap around canvas for a sculptural-like frameless piece of art.

These aspens and birches look great hung alone to brighten up a little spot, or in a grouping with some of my other 12x12 trees. Hang them horizontally, vertically, on a diagonal or stacked. If interested in seeing companion pieces, please e-mail Niki Gulley for options.

"Wind Dancing" by Texas Artist Rebecca Zook

I wish I could capture sound in my paintings. The rustling of the seed pods as they dance in the wind says "Fall is near" to my ears. The swaying stalks these dancers clung to surrounded me completely as I photographed their movements; looking for the perfect angle of light to illuminate the pods. The challenge was to capture the essence of the movement in paint using the limited color palette. I'm pleased with the result.

April in Texas

With the plentiful rains here in North Texas, we have experienced one of the most beautiful Springs in recent memory.  Though this style of work is more traditional than most of my original art, I could not ignore the natural beauty around me and I just had to paint some of it.  This little vignette is just south of Nocona, Texas, Montague County, depicting the prickly pear cactii, the thorny mesquite, the patch of bluebonnets, along with just a spot of Indian paintbrush.

Texas Pups

Just Visiting

Completed as a commission, this painting is done in the manner of my Texas tailgate series with the early '50's style pick-up parked in front of the old Montague County jail. Though no longer used to house prisoners, it has become a meeting facility for various groups in the county. The walls are painted with murals by local artists to preserve some of the county's history. It was also the original meeting place for the founding of the Chisholm Trail Art Association in January 2007 and remained so until our group outgrew the meeting space. If you have a special place or event that you'd like to commemorate, I could paint one of my tailgate series for you complete with personalized license plate and whatever else you wish to tell your special story.

Let Us Bray

This was a hard one to title. I first thought of a social networking term that is popular with folks who don't seem to guard their language all that much, but thanks to my wife, Donna, who reminded me that donkeys don't laugh, they "bray," a more appropriate title surfaced. I did this painting from a photograph that I took at Lavender Ridge Farms back in the spring. Lone Star Sunflowers is a work based on photographs taken last summer on Main Street in Fredericksburg, Texas. I fell in love with this old clay pot with a large Texas star on the side. It was originally full of pansies, but the stately old pot seemed to call out for some additional occupants. What says Texas summer better than giant yellow sunflowers?
