"West Chop Meadow", this is a small painting, 6" x 8", oil on canvas panel.

My inner voice told me to go to West Chop to paint this afternoon. I thought I was supposed to go all the way to the beach and jetty. The universe had a different idea. How about a January sailboat out and about in the middle of a warmish day…? (There were actually 2 sailboats out, but only this one caught my fancy.)

I was not scouting for a particular view when I started out today. In my van by this beach path watching terns dive for their dinner, I wondered if the fishing would be good. Opening the tail gate to grab my fishing rod, I got my paints out instead. As I began painting, every 15 or 20 minutes another sailboat would come through the passage between the far islands and pose for me…

This is the view to the north of the last painting I did, "Scallop Boat". It was a different evening light as well as different wind direction, and colder. With fewer boats left in harbor in winter, it is easier to see into the far corners compared to the madhouse of summer boating...

Scallop Boat - Thaw Malin iii

"Scallop Boat", this is a small painting, 6" x 8", oil on canvas panel.

I was in the lee of the wind with 45 mph gusts overhead and farther out from shore. It was not a day to be outside of my van painting however. Just as I was finishing, a thunderhead floated over the lighthouse to my left. It became orange on the sunset side of the anvil shape and deep purple on the eastern side. Moving too fast for me to try to paint it, I can only savor it in my memory...

Last Beach Sail - Thaw Malin iii

"Last Beach Sail", this is a small painting, 6" x 8", oil on canvas panel.

It was late when I arrived here at the beach. I was despairing about only having the dunes to paint. I set up my gear and was amazed to see this sailboat with 2 sailors appear. They beach the boat at the back of the dunes and followed the path up to the surf side. After a few minutes of satisfying their curiosity, they reappeared. They then shoved off in what little air there was, probably berthing at their dock as I arrived in my driveway...

I got a chance to take a break from my daily small works that I've been so busy with to paint this commission last week for a friend who is moving from the Corpus Christi area. In our mild climate, it is fabulous weather to take the boat out for a New Year's Eve sail, which we did. Here is a painting of her boat, Eau de Vie, with Corpus Christi in the background. I went in swimming here, earlier in the day. I knew I would have to come back and paint later. It was just too nice a day to not want to be by the water's edge for sunset. It wasn't until the mosquitos came out as the sun went down that the bathers below began walking swiftly to their cars...

Home Port - Thaw Malin iii

"Home Port", this is a small painting, 6" x 8", oil on canvas panel.

I was testing out my new "camera" here today for zooming and distance. Suddenly I realized this was were I should paint as well. What a beautiful afternoon, marred only by the fire at the U.S. Coast Guard Boathouse at the other end of the Island in Menemsha. Luckily there was no loss of life. I will miss painting that red roof and crisp white exterior in major contrast to the fisherman's shacks seemingly in disarray all around it. Hopefully they will soon rebuild in a similar style...
