Contemporary Palette Knife Painting

I really got into this palette knife painting yesterday at the studio.  The basic shapes did not change, but the colors were all mixed, and layers of thick oils give this canvas texture.  I have so much paint on the canvas, it will take a long time to dry.  Here are a few pics of my progression with this painting:

 Drawing out the big shapes on the canvas...I usually do this with a filbert brush and paint.

 Covering the canvas with paint...filling in with bold colors.  Making sure that I like the shapes and placement of them.

Using several different sizes of palette knifes, working with the paint, moving it around on the canvas.  This stage of the painting is so much fun!  If I make a stroke I don't like, I just scrape it off....Thanks for looking at what I am doing in the studio...If you have any questions or comments, please contact ME.  Thanks for looking....Kay

Contemporary Palette Knife Painting

This is a piece that I started in the 

Laurie Pace Palette Knife Workshop 

at the Dutch Art Gallery in Dallas, Texas.  

Laurie has a unique a approach to palette 

knife painting, and it was so much fun to 

watch her demo and then teach us.  This 

painting has layers and layers of

color.  I wanted this painting to be colorful, 

abstract and interesting.

painting it after seeing it!

Mixed media is so much fun to work in...the possibilities are endless.  I started with a linen gallery wrap  surface with clear gesso, knowing that I wanted the natural linen to show through.  I used ink, oil colors, and oil sticks to create this abstract.  The dragonfly has a stained glass appearance and is colorful with transparent oils.  This funky dragonfly is available for sale.  Please contact Kay at kay@kwyne.com for more information on this painting.  It does not need a frame.  Thanks for viewing.  Kay

The viewer's eye doesn't rest while looking at this painting....My inspiration for this painting was a dragonfly that John Wyne found in our yard...I guess you could say that I have started collecting dragonflies since I have a total of four. They are very interesting creatures. The picture below is a close-up of the dragonfly.

This contemporary abstract is finally finished. I had started it about six months ago and it was one of those paintings that I did not feel like it was complete. I kept adding lines, shapes and color. The wings of the dragonfly disappeared into hard edges and angles. This abstract evolved after going through several different stages. When I first started this painting, I though I wanted to paint an abstract. Then at one point it was going to be a horizon series painting. You can see where the horizon line is...and then after putting some color on the the canvas, I saw a dragonfly and proceeded to incorporate that image along with some geometric shapes, lines and texture.
