Stop And Smell The Flowers by Kay Wyne

Stop and Smell the Flowers
Runner-up in the 2015 Catholic Foundation Plaza Arts Competition
Not For Sale

When I was painting this contemporary still life, I was thinking of the phrase, “Stop and Smell the Flowers”, which is the title of this painting.  I wanted to create a unique painting with the beautiful colors and interesting shapes in the arrangement that I had set up in the studio, and transfer them to the canvas.   There is something special about painting from life...it is so much better than painting from memory or even a photo.  Painting this floral arrangement from life gave me the opportunity to capture the true essence of the flowers.  I want the viewer to feel the fullness and freshness that I experienced while painting.  I used a palette knife and wide brush to apply the thick, juicy oils on the canvas.

I can't wait to see the winner of the Plaza Arts Competition...the unveiling of the art on the building will take place next month.  Congrats to the winner, Stuart Hausmann.

I am back in the studio getting ready for an exhibit in February, 2016...sounds like it is far away, but actually it is right around the corner.   I have several more florals on the easel, and working on some equine paintings.  Thanks for looking at this blog....Kay Wyne

Still life in progress by Kay Wyne

Still Life in progress...

Here are a couple of pics of a still life in progress.
The set-up took alot of time and thought....
great color, texture, light, shadows and composition.
Don Sahli and Sharon Hodges spent quite a bit of
time setting upset it up this arrangement. Once
Sharon started painting it, I decided
I had to get in on the fun.  Don has a
great collection of beautiful fabrics, pottery and
antiques to choose from when setting up a still
life for a painting...whether it is indoors or outdoors.
I quickly blocked in the abstract shapes and started
on the colors.

After several hours, I am getting the colors, shadows,
light and shapes on the canvas.  I have more to do today,
and can't wait to put more thick paint on.  More
photos tomorrow....Thanks for looking
at my art and the paintings posted here
on this blog.  Kay

Bloom by Kay Wyne

Bloom
10" x 12" Oil on RayMar Cotton Panel
Contemporary Oil Painting
This is the third and last painting from the bouquet of flowers.  I took liberties on this one, and painted the vase shorter and wider, and filled the canvas up with color.  Vibrant colors....no mud on this painting.  Thanks for looking at the art on this blog.  kay@kwyne.com  Kay

A Heavy Dose of Color by Kay Wyne

A Heavy Dose of Color
12" x 10" Oil on RayMar Panel
Contemporary Floral Painting
When I got to the studio yesterday, I set up a still life....John's cousins had sent us a beautiful arrangement, so I took them to the studio.   I hadn't painted flowers just for the sake of painting flowers in a long time.  Here is a pic of the set-up and the first phase of the painting.
I enjoyed the exercise so much that I think I will go back to the studio and do all again today....Thanks for looking at this blog and the art posted here.  Kay@kwyne.com   KMW

Contemporary Landscape by Kay Wyne

Contemporary Landscape Painting
To be named.....
Oil on Heavy Duty Gallery Wrap Canvas
36" x 36"
This painting has taken weeks to complete. It started out as a landscape with intentions of a mountain range and aspen trees. I stopped at one point and decided I wanted a field of wildflowers. Then after painting all of the wildflowers with thick impasto and the palette knife, I scrapped it all off. I really went through the paint, but the end result is something different than I normally paint---with the texture of the canvas coming through and blended colors. and very few hard edges. It is currently drying at the studio. Thanks for viewing my art. KMW at kay@kwyne.com or 214-532-0325.

You Make My Day by Kay Wyne

You Make My Day
24" x 18" Oil on Linen Gallery Wrap
Palette Knife Painting
Colorful, contemporary, and abstract describe this painting. It was a stretch for me to use so much green, and I was uptight that I might turn out a totally green painting. Anyone who knows me has heard me talk about my issues with the color green. I really paid attention to the colors. My inspiration was a photograph from the Dallas Arboretum that I took....wonderful fields of tulips. Thanks for viewing this blog and the art...Kay at kay@kwyne.com or 214-532-0325.
